Title: Shoulder clicking and weakness
Post by: Khare on 14 August 2012, 22:38
Over the last few years I've been having problems with my shoulders, right in the joint. I get a clicking very often when moving, especially during exercise. When moving I feel the collarbones sometimes "jumping" into their normal position throughout the movement. I'll point out now, I've broken my both my collarbones 4 times. 3 on the left and 1 major on the right, which is the side I feel it jump the most. The left side clicks the most. Sometimes I also have a low to mid intensity pain deep in my shoulder joint, this usually happens in the morning when I wake up. It's so painful, and my arm so weak that if I'm lying down I can't move my arm up.

Has anyone got, or had any similar problems? If so how did you sort it? GP?

I find exercise helps my catalogue of ailments, particularly the neck and shoulder issues I've had for the past 13 years or so due to been in a severe car accident which obliterated my left clavicle (collerbone) amongst other things.
If I don't stay 'physical' my fibromyalgia starts kicking up a  sh!t storm.

Gotta love this - Khare comes on to a Motoring forum to ask medical advice. Get it checked out man!

Seriously, I've had enough issues with shoulders - 2 years of constant pain followed by 2 operations. Go and get an appointment booked. Might be nothing, but also could be serious. Speak to an expert, not a bunch of spanner-wielding Internet junkies!

Though that said, I do have one of these if you want something done quickly...

Reason I ask here is because there might be a Doctor, who knows! I'll call my GP tomorrow and book myself in

Most physios I have visited insist 'Motion is lotion', I tell them other wise when it hurts to X muscle group!!!

Perhaps try to build up the shoulder muscles progressively, I feel many people over look shuolders when 'working out'. They are used a lot during the day and can become very weak if not built up....However I imagine this would depend on what circumstances you broke your collar bones on  :undecided:

Personally I wouldn't waste GP's time, he will only refer you to a physio who will take a while to see only to tell you to probably stretch more and slowly build up muscle...Not much else you can do unless it is totally FUBAR'd.

Well my right collarbone broken pretty badly, and it was in the times when you'd get a sling and a pat on the back. None of the surgery they now do to align the bone and all that. There is a visible lump on the bone where the collarbone obviously healed with one half above the other, making it shorter.

You mean in the times AKA about 8 years ago. Medicine really has come on since I also broke my collar bone

If it is real bad perhaps you should see a physio, but at the end of the day the muscles/ligaments will take all of the strain possible until they can no more...Quite possible the worst picture ever

But I hope you get the idea, (Go round until the weights touch at 12 oclock!) this really builds up the shoulders well as I have found (I am a mens small to put that in perspective) and has helped me with issues from playing squash and badminton in the past!

Last time I broke it was just over 5 years ago, that was the time it broke bad. I've yet to have surgery on anything, when I broke my 5th metacarpal and dislocated my little finger again 5 years ago, all I had was 2 of the biggest female nurses on shift trying to pull it back into place, one pulling on the finger and the other holding me back. Nowadays it seems you get screws, pins and plates for most broken bones. Will try out the exercise you suggested. I do shoulder press at gym, but often cut it short due to pain.

From my experience shoulder press, on the machine, is a poor exercise. You want to be working all of the shoulder and shoulder related muscles, of which there are at least 3, I think!!  :undecided: To get well sculpted and strong shoulders try that exercise as well as some shoulder shrugs, maybe 3 sets of 8 or so a a couple of times a week and you should feel youself getting stronger. PS you won't be able to do a heavy weight, start low and build up

As for the pins/screws I'd probably just go with what ever treat the un hopital gave you, surely they know best! No one needs to be setting of metal detectors unnecessarily, especially during the Olympics!  :lipsrsealed:

Mine wasn't pinned or plated either even though it was broken in two places and blatantly should have been - cvnts!

Speaking of metalwork, I had titanium plate put in my left eye socket and cheekbone last year and that's not set any metal detectors off anywhere. Apparently it has to be a certain density or something? :undecided:

newer metal detectors are able to determine the difference between surgical grade metal and other, gues its probly something to do with the density yeah. only ever had a metal detector go off on me once since i got it done, had no metal on me and the only thing i could think of was my plate. but they couldnt get it to beep on the hand detector when they put it over me...

Its probably the most complex joint in the whole body. I have had shoulder problems, so there is only one suggestion I would give.

Get it seen by someone that speciailses in shoulder injuries. Pay if you have to.... it  will be the best money you ever spend. You will probably only need an inital consultation/examination. You can then take this report to a physio and ask them to follow it up with a call to help decide on exercise that will help you.

It very easy to go to a nhs GP and be give a photocopied sheet.... only in 10years time find out you have fcuked yourself beyond repair.

I've booked an appointment with the GP for next tuesday, for this shoulder pain and also for the trouble I'm having breathing through my nose, some may remember my post a few months ago.

Do these exercises to get the rotator cuff working and built up.

The muscle is the problem, the skeleton is just the frame it hangs off.

this.

Also stop using resistance machines in the gym and only use free weights that allow freedom of movement. more reps less weight.

Went doctors today and he said he's going to refer me to a physiotherapist to work on my shoulders. He said he thinks my rotator cuffs are fine, there's no obvious weakness in the joints so he thinks muscle strengthening will help reduce the clicking and collarbone popping out of position.
