Cheers bud. Yh good old rust. Not as bad as I thort I would be bcoz it was advertised as the sills completely rotted out. Hopefully I get the rest of the pannels then il sart it next week

-
Thats a pretty ambitious project bud, loooooootttt of rot in that car..
Not compared to jamos gti
Well I've also wanted a project so may as well make it a big one lol
I feel more confident doing the work on this car then I would doing an engine conversion on my 1.6. Bodywork is my trade
-
Take no notice if you do bodywork for your job i can only assume u know your way around a welder. If ur interested the first 6 inches of the floor pan on mk3's from the lip of the sill inwards is a seperate panel and under £20 from VW as i bought some before so where your sill is knackered if the floor side is rotten too may be worth getting one?!?! Let me know if you want part numbers.

Yh well I mainly do tig and gas welding ( steal and ally) as I work on classic cars but can handle a mig too, I have only basic mechanical knowledge tho so body FTW for me lol
Ideal cheers, I might have to take you up on that. I'm gunna have a good look next week so will most probably pm you then
-
Yeah no worries, as i say i think there about £18 each from VW so f#*k all really, just let me know.

Can not wait to see this finished!!!!!

Can't really do too much till I get the new sill and rear arch but gunna do little bits untill get them
-
Are you going to leave it de-arched.
-
The problem I had was the back of the wing catching on the door when opening, I had to reshape it so it all cleared properly! Maybe it was just a terrible wing that I was given lol! Looking good though mate :)
-
Are you going to leave it de-arched.
Yh havin no arches or sill covers. Thinks it looks a lot cleaner and prefer them without

Yh got the same problem but I found it because the front two bolt holes (the ones under the bumper) need opening out a little so I can move the whole arch forward to clear ad also sort the gap between the door n the arch

Yeah, I tried that with mine but then the front end of the wing protruded further than the bonnet and the gap between the door and the wing was huge lol! Glad your fit alright though :)

Yeah, mine has an ABS problem as well lol, I'm probably gonna rip mine out and fit a bias valve from a non abs model rather than try and fix it!

Pain in the arse ain't it. I tried scanning it for codes but nothing, gunna have another look at it tomorrow

The person before me had cut the block connector off the back of the dash light so I had to source a new loom secton :( I haven't fitted it yet, but I have a fault code come up saying wrong ABS coding! Tried a few different codes as mine is on the crossover year but still nothing. Swiped a different ABS ECU from a VR as well, but I haven't had time to try it yet. MOT aunt until June so plenty of time yet :)

How did it get on?
-
Didn't make it off the driveway :( after repairing the loom section, the auto electrician put it on his fault code reader and it threw up code 00519 which is MAP sensor no signal/ no positive pressure. Now I know that all the vacuum lines are in good condition and not blocked, because they were all replaced with 3m I'D silicone lines, there can't be an air leak from the manifolds because all the gaskets were replaced and everything was torqued down to vw spec, which means the MAP sensor its self needs checking. Seeing as at sensor is in the ECU housing and soldered to the motherboard, its looking like I need to get the ECU checked and fixed!

How are you cleaning coils?
I found the best method was wire wheel on a bench grinder. Then put a nice amount of copper grease on the threads all the way up and wind up and down a few times. It's been sat for 4 months and I just raised it and fine. :)

That's fine for a car that's not moving but for one that's on the move, you can't beat chain wax as it doesn't wash off.

Yh pritty much the same way, pritty supprised as none of the adjuster rings were seazed on so they must have been pritty well looked after before

Chain wax you say?!
-
Yarp.
Its meant for motorbike chains as obviously oil won't stay on for long at the speed they would be spinning at. Set mine up to the height I wanted, sprayed chain wax on the whole lot and they're as mint now as the day I bought them. Have adjusted since with no bother. Plenty of people have suffered with seized rings after not being adjusted for long periods and going bone dry and rusty.
-
Another option for coilovers is to spray them with waxoil.

Fair shout with chain wax. I used copper grease on the move for months then it sat months and all fine once givena quick wipe. But chain wax does sound good!
-
I need me some of this chain wax! Are you leaving the helpers out or in bud?
-

Yh gunna leave the helpers in, not planning to go crazy low
-
Fair enough! I'm not sure if I will be leaving the helpers in or taking them out yet! Not because I want crazy lows, but taking the helpers out and winding the lock plates up to the spring so it fits tight also buys you more inner arch clearance for getting camber/fitment right :)

Heater matrix isn't too bad. I like to get lots of little boxes and take out each bit and its fixings and place them in that box.
Remember the one or two 10mm under the scuttle!
-
Yh that sound like a plan! I'm gunna do it over a weekend so have plenty of time. Yh I've only put the scuttle pannel on with two of the those crappy screws coz I knew I'd have to aka it off again. Any idea where I can get those plastic screws new? As most of mine are fekd and just turn.

Fitted alright then? No not yet waiting for the new tip to arrive then gotta weld it on then il be putting it on
-
the bore was smaller on my BB but wouldn't go inside the midbox, so got a sleeve, a couple of jubilee clips and some ali tape!
wouldn't mind welding a better tip on like yours, i'd be afraid of blowing through though!
-
Ah right, easy enuff fix tho, yh mine came with two sleeves to fit it.
Itl be easy to weld bud, if you blew a hole jus turn the heat down, fill the hole and disc it off if there's a big lump of weld simples. Il be tig welding mine on as we have one at work.
Did my first bit of US ebay shopping today. Won this!!

The new coilpacks was £58 on ECP without the forum discount, if yours has done high miles it might be worth doing, saves braking down if it does go. I was gunna do all this anyways but was gunna wait till after the other halfs birthday but hay ho.
Cheers, that's only a photoshop tho the Coilovers are still in the shed lol

So what do you think of ABF power?

I know the feeling, tbh i dont do massive mileage but ive got an itch to fettle a TDI for some nice low down torque and the luxury of not having to fill up every week.

Yh, I do 40 miles a day and 280 mile round trip to Cardiff twice a month. Ads up! And I also want a shines new car lol

mk5's are very tempted but probably out of my budget for a decent specced one. Im swaying towards a late mk1 Seat Leon Cupra TDI FR.

Yh I looked at mk1 Leon's as I've always liked them. then looked into borrowing some cash for a mk2 Leon, but didn't like the interior so desided that the mk5 was cheaper and nicer inside, so landed on getting a gt tdi. It will most probably be in the summer

So next problem with the golf. I have a hole in my radiator. Been loosing coolent slowly for the last two weeks, but been waiting for a dry day to look for leaks. Annoying but at least I knw it's not the head gasket. That's my job for next weekend

Ok so I've decided to give my valver another chance . Been looking at getting a new car for the last few weeks now, but I figured it works and I know it well so may as well keep going with it for a little longer. Gunna fit a new fan motor at the weekend so hopefully that will put an end to the over heating, then I'm gunna fit the ss exhaust and the coilovers. Then sort out rx2s and get them fitted, and try and do some shows in the summer. I just can't get away from these bloody mk3s! Lol

Same reason I am rocking horrible RR and have half my interior still ripped out :(
-
Yh I have a long list to do but this weather is sh!te. All I managed to do this weekend is fit a couple washers on the bolts that hold the bonnet struts
-
Haha, better than I have achieved lol! It's not raining at the moment so I should go and refit my interior really :/
-
I really do need to lower this!
-
I really do need to lower this!
what coilovers are you putting on? everyone puts cheap ones down but I have joms and the ride is pretty good as it's not too slammed
-
I've just got a set of jamex ones, got them in a deal when selling my old car. Yh I had ak streets on my old car. Ride was a bit bumpy but I expected that and it handled pretty well
-
See, your starting to love it again....
-
See, your starting to love it again....
 no ones parfect, I'm learning to live with its imperfections
-
Soo I finally lowered it today, what a bloody game that was!! Only took me 5 hours . Mostly due to my own f**k ups lol.
Here's how it sat when I first put them on
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/DSC_0157_zpsdcdcad07.jpg)
Drove it down the road and back. And it sounded horrible!! Knocking noises, and metal on metal knocks and bangs. I thort I'd killed my car lol. So parked it back up and found that I'd missed two spacers out of the rear coilovers :embarrassed:. Soo had to take the rears off again and rebuild them with that in, drove it down the road again, the back was lovely now, but still MAJOR knocking from the front. So parked up again, lifted the bonnet, I forgot to tighten the top mounts :embarrassed: so did them out and now it drives smooth. Can't believe I made soo many rookie mistakes. Just a bad day I quess.
Here's how it's sitting now
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/c78f9a7308bfa9077bb202adea054883_zpsd1b1d081.jpg)
I prefer it lower but it's a daily so need to save my back lol
-
Almost as filthy as mine..bloody salt!!.........you could go a bit lower without issues.
-
Yh the salt is killer!! And the mud from the farmers!! Yh I'm gunna let them settle then go a bit lower
-
you finally did it! tbf the ride is so much more comfortable when it's higher, especially where you live I'd imagine. I dropped mine again by 20mm a few days ago, doesn't make you want to drive fast with all the bumps!
-
Josh, man up and lower it properly

So ordered new top mounts, standard suspension going back on!!
-
Completely standard?
-
Yh :nerd:. I'm not doing any shows init this year, I drive it more then I look at it so want a smoother ride. The standard sus on this handled quite well compared to my old mk3s so it's going back on. I do wanna get some new oem shocks and 30mm lowering springs but Im currently doing my bike test so that raping my bank account.

I do wanna get some new oem shocks and 30mm lowering springs
I would look for Sachs or Boge Gas shocks, will be a good match on lowering springs
-
I will admit that i'm planning on putting mine back on shocks'n'springs but only when i can get hold of some shortened shocks and -60mm springs.......addicted to low i'm afraid but the cheap coilover ride is beginning to naff me off a bit especially as i've been doing more motorway mileage recently where it does get very wearing.

Why not just raise the coilovers, I found mine better when raised.

I did try raising them but it just made them bouncier so crashy/bouncy and harsh instead of just crashy and harsh..

I think the main reason for me is the terrible roads atm, there so bad I places I'm having to drive round corner half on the other side of the road! Plus got a lift in my mates bora and it drove soo smooth, then got back in mine and it was horrible lol.
-
The roads around the westcountry are not very 'lowered' friendly thats for sure and this in turn does affect the way you drive a slammed car, i'm not convinced its the safest way to drive.
-
You bunch of ladyboys! Lol, to be fair, my Gti came with Boge struts and 60mm lowering springs before I put the FK coilovers on. It drove like a dream in comparison to my old Mk3 with hot tuning coilies :/ in turn, the FK's are a much better ride. In the coilover game, you really get what you pay for I reckon!
-
Anything with Race, Sport or Tuning in the name thats cheap is cack! Good rule of thumb. Never understood why people buy cheap suspension why even do it to yourself? Lol
-
Mines on fk's and it feels anything but smooth..
-
I've got old school jamex on the valver :smug:
-
any of you lot got advice for suspension that doesn't bottom out on the rear? I got joms and I like the ride except when I go quick over bumps in the road, the rear gets a bit funny!
