If your a fool then that makes the majority of us fools as well !
Modifying cars can become a expensive past time but also far more rewarding having something a bit different than spending the same or more hard earned dosh on a flash new motor straight out of the box ( IMO)
When I used to work at a dealership I drove all sorts Flash,Quickmotors including Quattros etc but when I parked my C reg mk2 Gti in front of the showroom it got far more attention than any of the new or newer VWs or Audis, because it was different ( 7x15 TSW Cross spokes, lowered Sebring twin oval) (bearing in in mind this was back in 1990).
I always enjoyed the drive home
It still got compliments from ordinary customers up until I reluctantly PX'd it for a S reg Passat 18t Sport back in 2001( the bloke was chuffed to bits with it ) VERY BAD MOVE
I even had quite a few offers when ,along with my Mk1 Gti ,were used as examples in the showroom when the Mk3 first came out.
If money was no object I would do every mod on the Vento that I have ( blown arches , 18t conversion etc) to make it a one off as its nice to know that no one has exactly the same car as me.
I am often being asked what it is (as it's different from the norm)
GO for it!!!  ( IMO)

not a fool at all, cars cost money but are lots of fun in the process. looking at other people lists i must have spent a similar amount but the trick is to get your hands dirty and try to do as much as you can your self. i know not everyone is mechanically minded but you save a fortune even doing the little jobs. for example changing your oil etc. also a good way to get parts is to scour classifieds. i think i'm a bit of a tight arse, i shop around as much as possible to get the best price but when you start adding things up it makes sense to do so!

hannah, i think you're a dirty little tea leaf and i'd never condone robbing parts from a scrap yard!

Post by: topher on 01 July 2005, 15:07
when you're a young blonde lass they give you the parts for free

To be honest i dont think its possible to spend TOO much on your car, other people may think so.. but its your car not theres, if you didn't think it was worth it you'd sell the car anyway right ?

As for my spending list on dubs.. since joining this forum back in 2003 i've cained over 20k on cars/bills/repairs/mods, but i still smile everytime i drive them

I reckon I'm getting close to a grand now but that's not to bad really. Needs a few little more bits doing. The mini however doesn't owe me a whole lotta change out of £15K.

the things donated are from a car my uncle was scrappin, my cousin stripped it first so i got what was left  i'm so hard done to!

and btw just because im blonde and female doesn't get me anywhere, im a fighter in this world as much as the guys are! trust me! my attempt so far at my car is sending my dad out to buy me a haynes.... got thre haynes and the max power haynes now... not done anything though... building up courage....  i just don't want to break a nail!

gtijoe - think you better take a girly to the scrappy with you... these new trendy BIG handbags r great!!! lol

as for spending money on dubs.. i think its great... (when i get mine started./.. still decidin what to do) you could be spending the money on drugs and being a no hoper in life... i'd rather drive a decent car that die with loadsa money in the bank.. i earn it, i spend it.... shoes, handbags, cars... the lot!

if my dad see's this im being sensible with my money  (the only reason i bought the golf was to prove how grown up i am... fed up of being called a child by him!.... and that showed him!!)

woohoo... i love cars.....

Post by: SimonJ on 09 August 2005, 15:03
we spend a lot because the cars are quite old, but definately worth it. I'd much rather spend it on my golf than what some guys I know frm college do, like putting lexus lights on a corsa or spending 5k on a 1 litre nova, u know one of those sh1te ones u see that have got filler and primer all over it
Title: Re: Am I a being a fool???? too much cash???
Post by: Haribo! on 13 August 2005, 04:37
i hate those types, another typical old corsa mod is one of those silly exhuasts that look like a jumbo baked bean tin that looks fine on a nice big fcuk off beast car but not a 1 and a half tonne fricking corsa that cant hit 60 in any less than 20 seconds! grr, fun to leave in my dust at the traffic lighs tho

Must admit i don't understand the whole 'get a little one litre car and do it up to the hilt' thing...  Someone told me it was to keep the insurance low but surely you could spend the money from the bodykit and wheels for the insurance on a better car anyway!!

Buying car, alarm & anti-theft devices, oil changes, services, MOTs, bits of paint to make mint, lowering springs and shocks, buying polished wheels, new hood, the list can go on and on, I'd hate to think what I've spent, probably 7k+ and I've also got a camper to look after, but I just love this quote and it sums it up.

1991 Golf Driver 1.6   Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£50
MOT & Precheck       Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£60
Oil, Filter & Flush        £15
Tax                         Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£170

And petrol, and a couple of tins of car wax from the Pound shop (£2). Not bad for 6 months enjoyablemotoring. Shame the tax is more that the car and bits cost to date.

When i can find a rustfree GTi, thats when the money starts getting spent.

I get more enjoyment chucking the Golf around than I ever did out of my highly modded Saab 9000 (just don't ask how much that cost to do-for instance, the clutch was nearly £800 fitted )-outdragging M3's got as little boring!
