Just thought I would drop in and say hi, I am currently 18 and soon to be 19,I currently have a 1.2 16V corsa B but I am saving for a mk4 golf gti. Insurance is only gonig to be £1300 for a gti when I turn 19, and going to get a £1000 loan out as well as save a grand up for the car.
Can you pick up a decent 1.8 or 2.0 golf gti for less then £2000? Sure you can.
My question is, what do I need to look out for on both of the models I listed above :)
Thanks everyone and hi :)

and welcome
and avoid the 2.0 mk4
-
avoid all of them.........dark gloomy money pits
or save more and get a fully modded one - will save you an arm and a leg
-
Thanks mate and what is so bad about the 2 litre?
Take it back insurance will be £1400 for a Golf GTI 1.8T, still not too bad at 19 right?
-
But thts not the fun of it Dalo, haha.
When I was 17 I had a Corsa be like u pal. Then 18 Astra, then as soon as I turnt 19
I got a 1.8T 20V Mk4 GTi.
1.8T all the way
-
I have a 2.0 and agree they are a pile of poo!
Dog slow with only 115hp.
-
Cookieace, do it if insurence is tht for u. My 1st year in my mk4 was like 220quid a month haha. Thts like
Double.
£1400 a year. Thts better than my 2nd year quote. Amd I have 1 years no claims bounus
-
I am 19 on the 30th and have 2 Years no claims (drove on provisional and got a deal).
But yea depending on the year of the golf it ranges from £1300-£1480 which isn't too bad.
Is it likely to pick a Mk4 GTi 1.8T up for about £2000 or less?
Nah no point buying a fully modded one want to get one and make it my own. What are peoples thoughts on a £1000 loan over 3 years for about £35 quid a month?
-
But thts not the fun of it Dalo, haha.
I know just about to sink another grand into mine
-
Yea do it Cookie. ;)) I would do tht if I was in your situation. Go on..! :)
-
Haha yea I think I will.
So you think the grand loan over 3 years at £35 a month is worth it? While saving a grand of my own money? If so should have the car in a months time if I find the right one.
possible to find a mk4 golf gti 1.8T for less then 2k then?
-
Broomers I can't reply to your message atm, how long ago was it since you actually bought your golf?
1.8T GTI mk4 available for less then 2k people or will I have to get a bit more? Thanks
-

can get 1 for half that now

Obviously golfs have high mileage as they are like tanks but is there a certain amount of miles you should avoid on one?
E.g. Don't touch one past 150k?
-
What age do you have to be to get a loan out?
-
I wouldn't totally write the 2.0 out if i were you. I have one it looks awesome but no it doesnt have the power you would expect.
But its reliable and costs me less than a 1.1 saxo to insure! I have me and my other half on. (i have 2 years no claims and she has just passed) And i pay £800 a year.
Its definitely not exactly gti performance but compared to the 1.1 saxo i had it feels good to me :)
If you want performance and engine mods then avoid the 2.0. But if you want reliabilty and cheap insurance with all the looks then the 2.0 is still a good choice.
Plus they are going for cheap as fook right now!
-
Nah performance and engine mods for me please :)

as long as its been well looked after then i shouldn't think mileage should be a problem.

exactly what i was thinking with the age of the mk4 it will be hard to find a low mileage one cheap lots of ppl on here still getting more power out of their cars with high miles on them
-
Ok thanks guys, don't know if I should go for the loan as don't want to be paying it off the rest of my life
-
Don't get the loan, speaking from experience, as next year u will just add a bit more for the years insurance, then a bit more for mods, then you'll be payin £200 per month for 25 years haha!!!
Just spends the extra time Savin by lookin for a well looked after motor, one will come to when your ready to buy
-
I should have about 800 quid saved at the end of the month and its my bday on the 30th so about 900 I am hoping.
If not may do the year loan as my littlewoods thing expires soon and that was 30 quid a month lol
-
the best thing to look out for that no one has mentioned yet is something other than a mk4 golf after you have taken out a 4th mortgage to cover all the problems it still doesnt run right and throws a wobbly
-
I am sure that not that bad, must be all the stick you lot give them.
-

lets see you say the same 6 months into ownership
-
Thought there meant to be reliable cars lol?

NO they arent.
-
Always heard they were like tanks lol.
Expensive to replace parts.
-
i would personally stay away from a loan get a gti non turbo 1.8 and the money u save on insurance can go towards bits for the car u can pick non turbo gti.s up for about 1k
-

bout as heavy as one lol
and yes parts can be very expensive.

Loan wouldn't be for insurance it would be towards the actual car and definetly want a turbo :p
-
can get a turbo for a grand these days

I pay half of that on my 2.0 with my mrs on the policy aswell,
-
Ok thanks everyone well I should have a tax rebate coming and then work forgot my holiday pay so hopefully in 2 weeks I should have just over a grand, if I have the oppurtunity to get one on finance I think I would (no different to getting a loan out though I guess)
-
Just rang a garage about a golf gti and he said I may need a guardian or parent to say they will pay it off if i can't as he asked for my age and i said 19 in 10 days, is that right does anyone know?
-
probably to do with your credit rating as your young so is normal for them to ask or say that
-
Any ideas how I can check my credit score?
Would I have the same thing asked if I wanted to get a loan out?
-
bought mine for £2900 with 84k on the clock, one owner from new and M25 mileage...then the fun begins...
£1200 for my first major service - steering colomn, wishbones all round, all engine pullies, new fan belt, air compressor, rear passenger wheel bearing, braided brake lines, full service...
6 months later...
£600 - MOT, Minor Service, starter motor, minor oil leak (still not fooking sorted)
current...(and to do)
Modding time  Cambelt, Oil Catch Can, Carbon Delete, N249 delete, G60 clutch conversion, miltek cat back resontated GT60mm twin, rear 4mo valance with smoothed rear bumper, R32 front bumper, Euro Side Skirts, Cupra front splitter, Satin Respray, Roof Black Magic spray, custome Recaro leather interior retrim, carbon wrap door cards and center console, W8 courtesy light (sunroof version), pillar mounted boost gauge, Rota drift 18", coil overs, tinted windows, tailgate smoothed with beetle pop lock, Rtech spec 1 remap, Audi TT vent mod...am i missing anything?
worked it out... after all the above my house deposit would be reduced to £43.90...just enough for a light up gear knob with GTi on it and a new gaitor

I actually work at McDonalds as I was made redundant from my last job.

How long ago did you buy your golf?

about a year ago now, still good motor, and his sister use to be manager there but left as few months back i think, well i'm sure i'll be around for a big mac at some point tbf lol
-
haha I could get you a discount and I have been there for 5 months, what is his sisters name?
Do you think my own bank would allow me to get a loan out of 1k over 2-3 years?
-

if i were you mate i'd take it one mod at a time and most dealerships actualy do finance which is easier to do and the car would be under warranty for the length of the agreement, of course if your crdit rating is good and you can manage it back with the bank then there shouldnt be a problem as long as you have a garuantor i think it is?
-
Unfortunately I have no one who can be a guarantor, I just rang admiral to see how much it would change over for a golf gti and they said £900 quid, but online when I am 19 I am getting quotes of £1300 quid for the year.
WTF swear they make prices up.
-
put it this way i got a qoute at 18 for a audi qauttro 2T for 1200£ its because all the youngens drive cars below a 1.4 theres more accidents in them therefore small cars are associated with young drivers expecialy certain makes and the insurance is sky hi, i can get a qoute on a R32 for £460 at aged 21. the bigger the car, the cheaper the insurance
i worked for Churchill and Directline Car insurance btw
-
I wouldnt agree with that, it comes down to where you live, how you store the vehicle (garaged or on a dark road next to a ginnel  )
how old you are, accidents, points, the insurance group of the car and the value of the car and of course modifications and security
-
statistically speaking age and car type come first then it filters down into the fields you have mentioned, mate had a 1.4 golf and his insurance was £2900, he now has the 2.0GTI and his insurance £1600-£1900 but most of that was due to a claim car vs. embankment during the winter :lipsrsealed:
-
i can get a qoute on a R32 for £460 at aged 21
I pay that for my Golf, all mods declared, car parked on drive, 4000 miles a year, and around 6 years NCB and I'm 28 (1 ban )

you must be surrounded by old people lol but tbf i always say bigger is better with cars anyway  golfs just have big engines :smug:
