6 hose is for cars with rear discs, 4 hose is for cars with drums.

I believe this is to do with does it have a load sensor valve or not (early vs late abs)

(b.t.w I could be wrong on this?)

Just thought id bump this as i still aint got my lines sorted. I will be doing a full brake overhaul from the pipes down to the pads.
Who got braided line fitted? Who did you buy them from? How much did you pay? And what make? Need to get some soon as now. As people are telling me different things1 thing are both my front and rear calipers banjo fitting? I have ate at from ane lucas as back. Disc size on front is 288mm and my car is 96 (p) anniversary.

should be the 6 line kit. good ridge through ebay are around £70-80, plus if you want to upgrade rear calipers (to less sticky mk4 one's) you can buy a kit with the correct conversion hoses

ideal time to sort both out (if your rear brakes are typical mk3 crap)

this is the mk4 rear caliper http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK4-Bora-Passenger-Side-Rear-Brake-Caliper-N-S-SEAT-SKODA-AUDI-/321077785061?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item4ac1ba31e5 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK4-Bora-Passenger-Side-Rear-Brake-Caliper-N-S-SEAT-SKODA-AUDI-/321077785061?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+IV&hash=item4ac1ba31e5)

you should get a pair for around £30-40 and they are alum rather than steel and have less issues with seizures. hand brake cables fit stright on but they use different hose connectors hence needed the goodridge conversion hoses (or kit)

All mk3 golfs use 6 lines.two front and four on rear. The rears use two each side, one from chassis to subframe and one from subframe to caliper or drum on each side. Why they do a 4 line kit beats me as you are left with a standard hose on each side on the rear, the one that goes from chassis to subframe.Makes it pointless.

Ok got some calipers (they from a bora) lucas ones with the standard lines and carriers for cheaps

hand brake cables are fine, and you don't need the carriers and the hoses wont fit. you need to buy some conversion hoses (and posted earlier) as the connections differ. most goodridge sellers will do a full kit inc conversion hoses (might be worth emailing a few?)

Make sure you check the bleed nipples on the mk4 calipers as they like to rip the threads out on removal/cracking off for bleeding

Well a guy who workz with me has them fitted to his type r and siad that you get a better feel of the brakes and braking is improved aswel.

Will i be able to use my normal rear discs? They are 226mm (i think)
Title: Re: braided brake hoses/lines

U want the 6 line ones i think.....goodridge are ones i would go for
Title: Re: braided brake hoses/lines
Post by: boneybradley on 23 February 2013, 20:48
old hoses can flex under pressure, even more so with rubber hoses. the braided type will improve the brake feel lots

and it will be 6 line kit, but if your fitting rear mk4 calipers call some suppliers and see if they will do a mk3 front, mk4 rear kit (they do them for the mk2's but I can't find a listing for the mk3)
Title: Re: braided brake hoses/lines
Post by: thai-wronghorse on 23 February 2013, 21:16
Complete 6 line kits with the mk4 rear caliper conversion hoses are definitely available from Goodridge although I've not seen many stockists listing them. I do remember them been bloody expensive as a full off the shelf option though hence i purchased my rears from eBay separately.

Speaking to that guy who does the mk3 to mk4 convo and he said 70 for all 6 lines. So just waiting on him to reply back and see where we go from there.
Will update my project (done a few bits but no chance to update it)

P.s where the feck is the part numbers on the calipers? I cant seem to find them.

Anyway just rebuild my old mans nissan almera caliper (handbrake lever seized) common. But its a bugger to put back together. Its the spring that needs compressing. Anyway will start my calipers soon.

The stainless fittings and braided cover are for show really, zinc plated ones will live long enough and are just as strong if not stronger.
They will just look a bit rusty next year, which is not good for someone with car OCD
My hoses are uprated and look just the same as a normal pipe, very boring I know

Where i work we do electro plating which is zinc lol but i have been moved up a level to zinc nickle plating (most expensive in the place)
Im more than happy with them.

Title: Re: braided brake hoses/lines

Zinc plate will no way ever last aslong or be as strong as stainless, Infact I dare say they would corrode after time
The overbraid is not for show its to keep the lines firm I was told by the guy at HEL

Where I work we use zink nickle plate and its used on cheap valves. The better valves are always stainless steel, 316, F51 etc

I wouldn't say no to having them on the car but I'd still
Rather have the stainless versions

I hear you about the zinc, it is a low price anti corrosion surface treatment and will wear through after a time but using stainless does not automatically make things stronger. Cast low carbon steel is generally more durable than billet machined stainless it just corrodes and looks sh!t.
The over braid is for protecting the ptfe/composite inner hose from abrasion and damage from heat or strikes in tough environments, the hoop strength of the hose is defined by the weave and layer of the different materials at the core of the hose and not the outer casing, if it is not bonded into the hose itself it is not for support
If you undo the hoses in the picture you will most likely find the braid is crimped just inside the nut.

I got the calipers from a bora (look exactly same as the top link) cleaned them up and sprayed them red (anniversary standards)
Now i had a look at the link again as i ordered some dust seals for the piston but they was wrong (thats another thing)
Thing is that the ad says the dism size for that caliper is 9mm solid but the mk3gti rears are 10mm. Will i have any issues with fitting my 10mm discs?

Sharki -  Have you still got the contact details for the guy that made your hoses up as I seem to have misplaced my mk4 rear conversion ones when I moved house and I don't particularly want to pay £40 for a pair of Goodridge unless totally necessary.
