Title: Vinyl Wrap.
Post by: LazyLunatic on 15 July 2012, 12:50
Going to be doing this soon. Got the vinyl just got to free up a long weekend to do it.

Wondered if there was any interest on here for this and wondered if anyone else debated doing it? I was thinking of doing a write-up if people wanted?

Doing the whole car? Be good to read a detailed write up, crazy how it's possible to accurately follow all the bodywork angles!

Would love to wrap a whole car.. Ive done loads of little wrapping such as mini dash's and interior parts.. The key for me was good quality vinyl as i bought a load of cheap carbon off ebay and the stuff was shocking but then you use 3m vinyl and its amazing how much easier it is..

pics and guide a must

I'm thinking of doing my roof (to cover up lacquer peel), so I'd really appreciate a write up!

I tried to do the roof on my mk4... safe to say.. I failed miserably lol

I'll get on it then!

Planning on getting thurday/friday off work and having a long weekend on it and hopefully get new wheels on too!

Yeah jv, whole car :) Mk3's are too bad looking at it. Bumpers, especially front, is going to be the hardest parts I think.

Proper wrap winyl from a proper company makes life easier, stuff is super stretchy and thick. Stuff I got I seen at sign show the other year, liked it a lot!

Me too! I think it'll tidy the car up and with the wheels should look much sexy rather than angry.

Looks awesome man!

Get a guide together when you can as well as what's needed

I'd like to do my roof before the end of summer if possible!

Alex, what cleaner did you use to prep the area?

Just bought 1.5m x 3m of carbon wrap  :lipsrsealed:

Cheers bud, mirrors were a little bit of work, but decent WRAPPING vinyl really helps.

You will get the feel for it as you do it. Vinyl needs to be pulled in the right directions, held in place, heated and applied. For most of the roof though you won't need heat. I'd advise having a helping hand, even for something as small as mirrors. You need the mirror to be held in place and hands free to pull vinyl and apply and heat, etc.

Few tips:

Tools:
- Heat gun + extension lead
- hard squeegee with felt edge (used for most of the application)
- soft felt squeegee (good for large flat areas)

Decent wrap vinyl is very forgiving, you can crease it, roll it up into a ball, stick it to itself, etc. Then pull it apart, heat it, and it'll be good to use again. It's manageable too and can be stretched quite far but it does have its limits, which you'll find if you overheat it or overstretch when its hot. If you were to try wrapping your roof with cheap vinyl you'll struggle to do a good job.

Also to be noted and not to be ignored is the prep, surface needs to be CLEAN. Soapy water or a good car wash before to get all the dirt/bits off. Then use isopropanol or a similar alcohol cleaner that won't damage the paint; this will remove any contaminates like grease, etc. Any grooves/edges or recesses or parts where the vinyl will be tucked around need to be super clean or risk the vinyl coming out at a later stage.

Once its all applied, you need to cure it by going over it with a heat gun, especially on the bit where the vinyl has gone into a recess.

I'll try and make a picture guide for wrapping a roof or bonnet this weekend :)

Let me know how you get on. I would usually recommend staying well clear of really cheap ebay vinyl!

Lol, no mate. I don't have a problem with pink and I like it on that BMW but not on mine. Going down a different route.

I stripped my car down today and got the roof done. Will be back on it Friday. Plan is to get the rest of the "on-the-car" stuff done, then Saturday get the "bolt-off" stuff done, like bumpers, bonnet, etc and piece it together Sunday.

Roof came out real good, got some pictures too. Will throw them up here with a little guide on what was done.

Alex, just wondering. How did you do the roof around the gutters? Did you just peel them back as you go along or did you remove them?

Take them off dude.

How do you take them off, aren't there some very easy to break clips holding them down?

Bought a new set of clips from B&B components, I know I'll be breaking one or two

Vehicle wrap kits.... Worth a go, but there is a reason people charge a lot to do.

Be interesting to see how much the kits costs, I was thinking of making kits to supply to people that wanna have a go> I'd be able to give advice and hopefully get around to writing up a guide or something.

Got more done today, will throw up an update soon.

for my mk4 it was £170 delivered plus you get 1 metre extra just in case.

Not a bad price tbh. When they "kit" does that mean its pre-cut for each panel with labelled bits for where they go or just a roll?

Once I get some free time, I'll get a guide together then, seems to be enough interest :)

How'd it go?
Title: Re: Vinyl Wrap.
Post by: Khare on 04 August 2012, 12:25
Went ok. A few blemishes in the vinyl from dirt (I had to do it outdoors, although I had a gazebo up with the side against the wind on), but the result I'm happy with for the first panel I've ever wrapped.

Might get some more from the site you sent me and do my bonnet, but not sure whether to do it in carbon again or in gloss white....

Good effort! I don't I could keep re-wrapping mine, would get fed up! My next vehicle wrap will bring profit, not pleasure :D

I like the Hot Pink in proportion, white is cleaner. Green is too much for me.

Out of interest, do you need to inform DVLA of the colour change, even though you haven't actually changed the colour, just covered it up?
Title: Re: Vinyl Wrap.
Post by: happyhighlander on 07 August 2012, 20:08
hi dubber,no at the moment you do not have to notify DVLA as it is classed as a temporary colour change, think it gets treated the same as buses vans and taxis with their ad liveries.better to notify insurance though as it can be classed as a mod, didnt add a penny on to her policy cost
