Title: Gearbox reconditioning
Post by: danjm20 on 12 July 2012, 17:45
Hi Guys

New here but since everyone around me is sick of me talking about Golfs, I thought I better go find some like-minded people!

I have a '90 Mk2 GTI 8v and it has a worn gearbox, the common crunch into 2nd when cold, but also struggles to get 1st and crunches into the other gears sometimes too.

I have an absolutely diamond mechanic, v v good, honest, and not pricey at all who does all my work on all my cars for me, and he tells me it's just worn synchros.

So, I was going to get the box reconditioned, and I did find a previous thread on gearbox reconditioning, but I was wondering if anyone knows anywhere where I could basically "swap" my old Mk2 box for an already reconditioned one off the shelf, as this is often cheaper, or if this is a good idea even?

Companies often take your old part (whatever it may be) and supply you with an already reconditioned one, so I was thinking of that sort of thing.  I'm in South Manchester, any suggestions?

Many thanks

doubt whether you will get an off the shelf exchange but any local gearbox specialist will be able to sort yours

If you go onto eBay there is a guy called the gearboxman who reconditions gearboxes
I think an 8v exchange box is about £350 if you search mk2 golf gearbox you will find him.

Aha yes, I found him...£375 - looks like a good deal, and it's exactly the sort of exchange arrangement thing I was talking about too...

Good work sir

"02a it for far less. You'd be mad to pay £400 to fix an 020".

The 02a is a better (stronger?) Potentially less mileage gearbox from the mk3 golf. A big improvement. It also has a hydraulic clutch rather than the mk2 cable one, its a bit of work fitting it all but well worth it,as is the box itself. It also will take a 16v or 20vt engine no problem. I paid £200 for my gearbox, pedal box, and hydro clutch setup, an extra £110 for a sachs sporting VR6 clutch, and fitted it myself. No crunches etc, 100 odd thousand mile box, but not so much as a  whisper from it. However to do it all easily the engine will come out too, so to go to the extra trouble I'd chuck in the abf engine with it, though I do understand its then a snowballing quite major transplant. I did it bit by bit as things broke, so easy for me to say looking back. For pure ease a straight swap 8v to 8v box would be best, but for bang per buck and value for money a £500 mk3 donor car and a few days labour is very hard to beat when your pulling it apart anyway

Aha...I see...hmmm v tempting.  But don't tempt me with engine transplants I soooo want to, but costs will snowball and I wanted to try keep it original.  You try keeping 4 old cars going on a budget

On my mk2 16v, the box feels lovely and direct, even though it's done about 50k more than my 8v, any idea why this would be, and would a mk2 16v box fit ok to the 8v, as I was also considering this option?

Hi mate,

I would try changing all of the gear linkages first. Its a common problem that you struggle to get first and second when they are worn,

I did this on mine and is as good as new.

If you have an older golf you might not have a weighted shift rod so I would get one as it makes the throw a lot smother.

Already done sir, but I like the weighted shift rod idea - many thanks.  New linkages did tidy up the stirring the rice pudding feeling, but now 1st is awful to get, and 2nd when cold too, but I know that's normal, all 4 of the mk2s I've had have had the crunch into 2nd when cold.  Do you know if a 16v box would fit though?
