I found a garage that does smoke tests, it cost me £25 which I thought was reasonable, and the leak it found was coming out of the top of the dipstick! As soon as the mechanic took the dipstick out and plugged the hole with his thumb there was no smoke.
So as I have a oem plastic dipstick holder and dipstick, what is best to replace it with? I have seen some metal ones on some cars with nice shiny silver handles. Any idea where I can get one of those metal ones from?
Thanks
-
think they maybe by 42 draft designs in the states, very expensive IIRC.
on the plus side least its an easy fix and no other leaks found :)
-
Dont you block the PCV system up on the TIP?
-
yeah or you pressurise the sump...
I always hook mine up to start from the metal pipe after the turbo

I had a look on 42 Draft design site, and I can't see any.
At first he thought it was coming from the inter cooler because the smoke seemed to be coming up from the radiator, but after it was the top of the dipstick, it does fit in although it is not a super tight fit. Would this cause a significant boost leak then?

Yes he did do that with a yellow plastic cap of some sort.

i bought one 3 months back n i have been chasing up awesome every week since

Yea, not quite sure how you quantify what a medium whack is. Then you have to repeat the process, so.... To summarise.....
Bash the sh!t out of it until it fits but only use a medium whack during any one strike.....

LOL
The bit that is leaking on mine is right at the top, so i am going to bung it up tomorrow with something to see if that can tell me if it is the tube or the actual dipstick I need to replace

is it a pain in the ass to fit then? is it any good or not?

£54!!
A lot of money for dipstick tube. OEM is less than a tenner and would do for a few years at least.

I agree. I think it is my actual dipstick, not the tube that is not sealing properly, because once blocked up tightly with the thumb, no smoke came out. I think I will just seal it up with something and keep the dipstick in the boot.
-
no offence intended but only a dip stick would seal it up

they are fragile both the pipe and dipstick after years of use, I remember swapping both parts over and the top plastic connecting part of the dipstick crumbled in my hand after removing.
if replacing them go direct to VW for proper parts and avoid ebay - buy cheap buy twice

Thanks, I will then. The tube is only about a year old, but the actual dipstick is the original one, so I think I will take a trip to my local dealers tomorrow and buy both tube and stick.
-
Just be careful taking the tube off, mine crumbled everywhere

thanks, but luckily mine is ok at the moment, as I took it off the other day when I installed my catch can, and it is fine
-
Err, you shouldnt have any smoke coming from your dipstick?
The only way the smoke can get in the sump is past the rings....
-
It was being smoke tested
-
Yeah I get that :)
What am I missing? Can't see a path from intake to sump?
-
I was Thinking excactly the same thing
-
Can I do a smoke test myself by taking puck out, blocking it, removing maf and pumping smoke into the tip?? :embarassed:
-
As far as I know he said he had to smoke test two ways, from two different locations in the engine bay, I just can't remember the locations. One for vacuum, and the other for brake, I think :undecided: something like that. He put 15psi through it, and the smoke was coming up above the dipstick and around the gap in between the metal plate that fixes to the inlet manifold and radiator. He first thought it was the intercooler, (I have a side mount oem) we checked the plastic pipes, like the cold air feed and the other one in the location in front of the dipstick, but it wasn't these. After this he blocked off the top of the dipstick tube with his thumb, which seemed to stop as much smoke, and that was his diagnosis. The smoke is not always that easy to see though, as you need a bright light or a uv light to spot it.
-
worried now as i broke my tube ages ago without sortin it :lipsrsealed:

Apparently it is dangerous to just pump smoked air into it, you need a certain type of gas or something, otherwise it could go bang!!!
But I have heard of some people using a disco smoke machine to do it!!

Dis should definately be stickied also how much more boost did you get by blockin up your dipstick also wat did you use to seal your dipstick to hold 20 psi boost through a dipstick tube
-
did he have the oil cap off when he was doing the test?
-
You shouldn't have boost pressure in your sump. End of.
If you have then something has gone wrong. If you put smoke into the intake of the turbo, it will go through the boost pipes, intercooler, past the throttle body, into the intake, and then stop at either a closed inlet or exhaust valve or NRV.
My best guess is that one of your NRV's isnt working.
This gives you a good idea where the smoke can escape from:

when I pressure tested mine I started at the pipe after the turbo, saved blocking things off all the time
That is an awesome diagram :afro:

I think so, but can't remember to be sure

Ohh, I see. I have deleted the pcv system and replaced it with a catch can, so am I right in thinking that I don't have an nrv any more? or is there also an nrv underneath the metal plate that the dipstick is connected to ? Because I think it may be possible that the mechanic suggested it was the top of the dipstick because he couldn't figure out where the smoke was coming from! or maybe it is underneath that tray in one of the pipes. I will have a look today as I intend to do the n249 bypass, so long as it doesn't start raining
BTW, thanks for the diagram, it explains the n249 bypass rather well!
-
If you deleted the PCV system and didn't put an NRV in that's your problem right there

Ohh! thanks. I better re-read the catch can install guide again :embarassed: Where does it go on the catch can set up then?
-
cobalt6700, when you say "didn't put an NRV in" are you on about the hockey puck black thing that goes into the tip, or the pcv valve? Because I did put the black Hockey puck back into the tip, and didn't re-use the pcv valve.
-
Sorry mate, PCV valve needs to be used still :)

OK, thanks mate  where do I place it, as I have been reading through the catch can install thread, and I can't see where it is supposed to be put

Have a look at part 27 on the diagram on the last page :)

Thanks, I will have a good read after having some coffee  and see if I can make sense of it. Cheers
-
Ok I have had a good luck, and I am not 100% sure where I need to put the pcv valve, but I think it may have to go before the T piece from the catch can. As in the picture below where the green arrow points. Is that right?

i dont understand why toy are putting the pcv valve back in, the reason for the catch tank is to remove all the failing parts!!!
just leave it as it is!!

That is exactly what I thought! But according to cobalt6700, he says I need to include it :undecided: I have read through many pages this morning on the catch can, and I only come across a couple who suggested in the thread "to T piece the outlet pipe before the tip, and run a line with a check valve back to the underside of the Inlet manifold to generate vac while car is not under boost." I think that was Pat who said that in the PCV simplification and catch can Install thread on U.Kmk4

not running a PCV valve here

Hmm.
Tbh I was only going by what the diagram says...
Sorry if ive caused confusion, only trying to help out

not your fault mate

no worries  it don't take much to confuse me with cars  All that I have learnt about them is from having this 1.8t golf. Before I thought you just got in them and drive away , I didn't realise you have to turn into a VAG mechanic to be able to run a 1.8t golf after a remap!
