Title: AcidicDavey's 96 Golf GTi Blue Colour Concept, GONE!
Post by: AcidicDavey on 01 July 2012, 21:15
Hi all, I'm quite new here and I'm a Volvo man at heart but decided to take the V70 off the road and buy something different so I bought this.

A 96 VW MK3 Golf GTi 2.0 8v Colour Concept.

A nice little car with loads of cool features such as heated leather, electric sunroof and other goodies.

It's on adjustable coilovers and it has a rather loud cat back s/s exhaust. The ride is very hard and everyone that's been in it has moaned they feel sick lol

Mileage is high (156K) but less than 2K ago it's gearbox exploded and a replacement with 65K on it was found and fitted along with a new clutch kit and crank seal. There are no unusual noises and doesn't smoke at all! New MOT and taxed until end of September.

Overall she's quite smart but there are a couple of marks here and there but nothing worth mentioning. The side moldings have been painted unfortunately and will be difficult to find replacements due to small cc badges. The rear is debadged and smoothed over which is a bit annoying, but I could just get a replacement, but again difficult to find in this 'special' colour.

The interior is in need of a good valet, plus some new bits. One door pin is missing, the fascia trim around the stereo is missing, the gear knob is totally screwed, the headlining is sagging a small bit in the rear corner, one dash vent is missing it's side to side air guides, the parcel shelf had speakers in them but as they weren't connect I've taken them out also the driver's bolster is worn somewhat.

The wheels are Audi A3 items and these will go for golf spec BBS wheels.

Anyway, here it is!

Stupid DUB sticker had to go, also removed a stupid blackout sunstrip on the windscreen prior to photos (why people want to make the line of vision through the windscreen smaller is beyond me!)

I cleaned up the interior before fitting my cheap £20 mats that arrived yesterday,
(http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/AcidicDavey/96%20Golf%20Gti%20Colour%20Concept/InteriorFront002.jpg)

As you can see I really need a new gearknob, plus the handbrake handle needs dying as it's worn.

Here's the Colour Concept logo on the Recaro seats,
(http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/AcidicDavey/96%20Golf%20Gti%20Colour%20Concept/CC001.jpg)

Plus I really need to change these badly painted side strips to change to standard unpainted strips.

Here's a close up of the A3 wheels that have grown on me a bit with my trade mark blue caps on. It had yellow metal caps on it before...

On the drive.

Bought a badgeless grill, in the post!

Right guys, on Thursday I went to a mates whom which lives up a gravel track on a hillside and when I was ready to leave the car wouldn't start! It took about 3 hrs of waiting until it finally started but it was hesitating during acceleration (I could only open the throttle 1/4). The next day (22nd) it started fine so I went to Knebworth on the 23/06 to see The Red Hot Chili Peppers as a friend had spare tickets and didn't want to see them go to waste, I wasn't sure about driving the Golf because of what happened on Thursday but we got there ok (160miles away), but getting home wasn't that easy! We did about 20miles or so and we were travelling northbound on the M1 and the car started to stutter under load in 5th and then died when we slowed down due to traffic at like 12:30!

We managed to get the car to a safe place and called for rescue to the next services (Newport Pagnell I think). We stayed in a Day Inn as it was like 2:30am and we were hoping it'd start in the morning and get us home, wishful thinking! It didn't start so I had no choice really but to call AA and join. They came out and it started straight away for them lol but cut out after a few minutes of idling so he checked for a spark but was getting mixed results so he chucked a new Ignition Coil and it was fine!! All this fooling around because of a bloody £30 part! Grrrr! But at least now it's running very smoothly and the exhaust is slightly quieter now too!

Anyway it's all sorted and fine now, I got a new gearknob, which really lifts the interior.

A new custom Silver and Blue Tax Disc Holder which is not sticky but you simply place it on something smooth like glass and just stays there! I've placed it above the rear view mirror to act like a centre sun visor, plus it looks cool there
(http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/AcidicDavey/96%20Golf%20Gti%20Colour%20Concept/TaxDiscHolder001.jpg)

Sorry for this guys but I've sticker bombed the petrol filler door. In this photo you can really tell that the whole car needs claying.

Here's a picture to show the rubbish radio which I'll soon replace and the damaged vent, I'll get a new one from a breakers along with a new parcel shelf and possibly a fan as the current one is wonky and vibrates through the whole car, works perfectly but has to be sorted!

My new bargain grille arrived so I've got it ready for paint. I've got new GTi badges for the front and rear to fit when ready.

That's all for now, sorry for the long post! I copied and pasted this from elsewhere so this mention of yesterday and today is all wrong!

Ragarding the side strips, may be wrong but im sure the badges are just stuck on so if u could get them off then u could stick them on a normal set.

I got my new side mouldings yesterday which is good news but my old ones were glued on!!

I managed to clip the new trims to the driver's side ok but they will not stick to the passengers's side, I have no option but to stick them on on this side!

You just need new plastic lugs (green things in the holes). They're pence from the dealer, and they will hold the new trim on perfectly provided the clips are intact on the mouldings themselves. Even if not, you can buy them for very little too!

Do you mean the little condom like things? as I've got them from the new clips I put on or do you mean things I don't have at all??

Yeah I suppose thats as good a comparison as any lol! There are a couple still in the door on one of your pictures. Worth getting new ones though, as they stretch over time, and I think there may actually be 2 different sizes too. If you look at the prongs on the "thingy" that goes into the "condom", there should be some with a bit more "girth" than others!

I've got all new clips and 'condoms', I've tried putting the condoms in their slots then banging the trim in, but it's no good. They're very secure on the driver's side but on the other side you can take the strips off with just your finger and thumb, ie very loose! I dare not drive the car with them on that side in case they fall off! I'll have to glue them on, I have no choice!

They're all clipped on the driver's side, I know I need new arch trims now!

Anyway, my radio arrived today so I went about removing my old unit, but while removing the surround I found the side-to-side blades of the vent!

The radio is in perfect working condition and is available to anyone who wants it for cheap.

The wiring was a right mess however, a connector has been chopped off and chocolate block connectors have been used, fortunately I only needed to swap over 3 wires but considering I have zero confidence when it comes to electrics I did ok!

Cage in.

In place and working! First time!

New cheap as chips surround stuck on with blue-tac as the new (Used) unit didn't have one just like my old one.

Looks crap as it's a little bit too big, will replace when the time comes.

That's all for now, I have some badges in the post so I'll post again when I receive them.

P.S. I apologise for this everyone but I'm getting increasingly tempted to fit a car bra to the bonnet as the leading edge is a little dented and a bit rusty! Sorry guys!

New badges arrived today from someone on VPC who does some great work with a rattle can!

As you can see they are a very similar colour to the Comets on the V70.

I ordered a can of Jazz blue which arrived today to carry on painting the grille I got but it's white so that'll be back in the post!

A good and a bad day yesterday.

Firstly, my pin striping arrived so I could personalize the car further.
Looks really good imo, I was toying with the idea of blue but settled for white obviously!

I need to get a sticker now to cover this small mark on the rear bumper.

Also a friend was sat on the bonnet and scratched it quite deeply but I'm not not bothered as the leading edge is rusty plus there are dents all over it! Perfect excuse for a Vento front end?

Also as I'm an idiot I accidentally drove over my indicator bulb as I removed the lens as it was full of condensation and forgot about it and drove off so I'm going to need to replace the bulb and bulb holder plus a bit of wiring!

When I see I'm an idiot I really mean it lol

I touched up the worn leather today on the driver's seat toady with some black paint dabbed where needed.

That photo has really highlighted the depth of the damaged to the foam, in reality it doesn't look any were near as bad!

Also sprayed over the rear carpet where it had faded! Looks like new now!

A better pic of the seat?

I got some standard front indicators and reflectors to replace the just plain awful chav spec chrome and black ones. I think these work well with the existing fogs.

I do intend to recover the headlining as it's sagging and dirty (plus it'll make good practice for when I do the Volvos which I want to do at some point) so I sprayed over the sunroof motor cover but ran out of paint during the first coat lol. O well, it's a start!

The rear carpet looks like new but is slightly crispy to the touch, but how often are you stroking the carpet?

I cleaned the leather up yesterday and I'm so impressed with the results.

I used Gliptone Leather Cleaner and Conditioner which is a 2 part process.

I followed the instructions on the bottles and here are the results of an hours work!

Before, the leather was very shiney and a bit grubby with spilt milk on the rear set along with a few marks here and there.

Front before:

Front now:

Rear before:

Now:

You car clearly see despite the bad pics that the leather has a much more natural matte look to it now. What you can't get from the pics is that the leather is much more supple to the touch and the smell is fantastic! No really, it is! The car is filled with the fantastic smell of old English leather.

I guess I'll have to do the V70 now ;)

I made a rather amusing discovery today. Since getting the car I've wanted to either change the wheels or at least the centre caps to VW spec. As it turns out, I have the the correct cap I need already lol!

In September I was a passenger in a mk4 Golf that crashed and we were all ok and I kept a centre cap as a souvenir and I found it today and as it turns out it's the same as what my car need!

They are actually the caps I have though (Same part number) but with the audi badge removed and big VW stickers on them! So no closer really other than I now know that they do make what I need, I just have to find them now!

The poor mk4 :(

The cap:

On the car:

Back to the Audi cap for now obviously and onto the hunt for some stick on badges!

Right then, I got hold of some 120mm centre cap stickers but as they are just flat stickers on domed caps they're creased and look so stupid! I really need some new wheels anyway so they'll do for now.

My Vento bonnet came and to be honest it's a bit of a mess and has it's washer nozzle holes filled in so...I'll still fit it, just need headlights and grill now.

Also got hold of a sticker to cover a mark on the rear bumper, frankly it looks daft and will come off eventually.

Despite the decision to shift the car I'm still going to redo the headlining, I'm not sure what I'm going to recover it in but everything is going to be black. My black sun visors arrived yesterday and I'm just waiting on some grab handles to come now. I would like a black roof light unit but they are incredibly rare and command good money so I'll have to just paint the surround of my existing one for now, if anyone finds one in a 93-5 Corrado with a sunroof then please let me know!
You can see here where the headlining is sagging, doing this car will be great practice for the others :)
Still need to get a parcel shelf!

Got a cheap replacement tyre to replace this one, canvas is showing :(
(http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww227/AcidicDavey/96%20Golf%20Gti%20Colour%20Concept/BoldTyre001.jpg)

Partly removed that silly sticker.
Would be perfect if ... was after rather than before!

When I get my grubby hands on some new wheels I'll remove the white stripe on the door mouldings and remove the stickerbomb!

P.S. Sorry the car's so dirty, loads of rain!

Jesus, why on earth did you let that tyre get so bad!

It was down on air, the rest of the tyre was fine

Today has been a pain in the arse!

Firstly I went to the local breakers yard to get a clean parcel shelf, was told there were loads of MK3 out back! Spent about half an hour looking for one, turned out there was one right behind the garage!! It had a black shelf in it but was filthy, I thought it'd do. Went and asked how much they want for it, he said "£25 I sell them for." Me "How about a tenner?" "No way, £25! They're £120 new!" Me again "How about £15 then?" "I can't go lower than £25" he then said. "Ok then, I can get them off the internet for £20 delivered, so how about £20?" "No! £25 is the price, you'd have to pay delivery charges on that off the internet!" I said no, that £20 includes postage(Loads on ebay!) but he wasn't having any of it so I just put it down and left! I've always heard bad things about this place, a local rung them up asking for a radiator for a V70, "Yh, we've got a 97 V70 being broken up, just come on down!" Got there and it turned out the car had been in a front end impact! What a waste of flipping time!

After this utter pointless endeavour I went to get the part worn tyre I got the other day fitted. The fitters checked it over and it looked fine but when they put it on the wheel and tried to inflate it no luck. There are 2 splits in the outside wall rendering the tyre useless! I had to get a brand new cheap as chips tyre there and then as my existing tyre was down to the canvas.

Very annoying!! Complaints will be made!!

Tried to edit them slightly but it's just showing the unedited ones (fixed!), plus I found a shelf on ebay for £10 plus £7p+p!

Obviously need to check your tyres more frequently then...

Steer clear of part worns, you never know where they have been.

It lost air driving round town, slow puncture?

I got the part worn as I didn't want to buy expensive rubber as I intend to swap the wheels if funds allow which seems unlikely  Got a full refund on it now!

I see this has been moved out of the showroom to the lounge, fair enough, sorry if I started this in the wrong section.

Anyway, I went to pick up some wheels today in Malvern and on the way I pulled over for some shots as you do!

Got these 5 BBS wheels off a normal VR6 with 4 nearly new tyres for £32! Yes just £32! They could do with lick of paint which I'll do myself.

Got some suede door pulls and handles for £20, only managed the passenger side as I can't get the bloody driver's card off!!

Next, sanding them wheels down, fun!

I've made a start at sanding them wheels down, not much progress yet so no pics, also put a Performance VW sticker over the scratch on the bonnet, again no pic as no point. Also bought some new arch trims to fit when the time's right.

Got some black grab handles from a Skoda VRs and a centre sun visor from an Audi TT all for the retrim!
Painted more of the headlining bits, went over the motor cover again and the sunroof switch in matte black. They came out surprisingly well me thinks

My Rear lights were poor! The N/S one had a crack in it and was letting water in and the other was snapped round the back! I got these mint CL ones for £12.99 delivered so I thought why not?  :undecided:

Trail fitted the Audi TT centre sun visor, looks cool but not big enough really!

I've got 2 of the wheels in primer but as you can see I'm not going for an amazing finish as it's really difficult sand in between all the many spokes, this is not a DIY friendly design to 're-furb'!

Hey all, I've been feeling fairly rotten the last few days so not much to report at the moment.

The material came for my headlining the other day. I made a right mess of it to be honest, it was way to thick and not malleable enough! O well, at least I found out when doing this rather than on one of the tidy Volvo's headlining.
I'll get down the scrapyard and try and find a nice one, I'll ask the price before purging it from the car though lol!

Wheel preview:
It's the only one on at the moment as the damn wheel brace has rounded slightly and was skipping! But it does indeed look good my thinks!

Random woodland shot:

Got the Bilt Hamber Clay Bar for £10.88 delivered from ebay,
The Gtechniq C4 direct from them for £23.69 to see what all the fuss is about,
Also got the Meguiar’s Ultimate Starter Kit as I heard good things about their Tyre Gel for  £16.99 delivered,
Also some new 55mm centre caps for £4.99!

I'm very happy with my £32 wheels, about £10 on materials. Should be able to sell the old rims for more than that :D

As you can tell from the pics I've got some serious motivation issues and still haven't fitted the new arch trims I got or given it the polish it really needs. She will come out very nice when I'm done though ;)

Since the wheel change this car has really livened up at speed, maybe due to the removal of the shims on the front?
