2 days after getting the car, I had a good feeling about getting the mirror glass out, so I pulled it... and it cracked
I replaced it, £40 from TPS. I didn't have any friggin LED's to put in it then, so had to replace it without even changing the bulb.
I have LED's now
I am feeling slightly optimistic. So any tips? Or should I just leave the bulbs alone and save myself a small fortune?
-
With the look you've had recently I'd probably leave it alone for while mate.
-
What mirror glass and bulb??
-
I think there is a post on here regarding changing them. Now you have the LED's you won't be able to stop yourself
-
Don't make the mistake like me of coming in from the side and trying to lever it out.

The passenger side glass seem's to be the trickier one to remover for some reason also.
-
I did this too recently. There's a thread on here somewhere I posted about it. Anyway, I got the drivers glass out really easily, I even took it out and refitted again twice (don't ask) and no problems.
So I tackled the passenger side with confidence and cracked it on first attempt! For whatever reason the passenger side is harder to remove in one piece, I don't know why... maybe its just coincidence.
The LED puddles do look good though, so it was worth it... I think!
-
True, with my luck I might leave it for a bit. No doubt I'd break both of them, replace 'em and some b@stard would drive past and knock one off or something!
Or the bulb would go and I'd have to do it all over again
I did try and convince VW to do it but they weren't having any of it
Nevertheless, I'm spending enough today without 2 new mirrors. Plus the one I broke was the drivers side it wasn't even the passengers so I've got no hope!!!!! :embarassed:
-
Complete units are available now instead of just changing the bulbs.

Expensive though, compared to just buying LED's for a few £ off eBay and I can't really see any benefits, as you still have to remove the mirror glass etc. Their fitting service in London might be useful for some, as if they break the glass, they'll have to replace it

Interesting........ come on who is gonna be first to fit them?
-
I don't see the point of buying that "whole unit" at all! You still need to remove the glass and then you'll have the extra labour of removing the existing lens too!
Just buy the LED bulbs for a fraction of that price (and some spare glass )
-
Maybe they'll be brighter, who know's till someone takes the plunge but i'm very happy with my single LED bulbs.

Oh Yes!, the passenger side. £35 to replace.

Ahh boo! I broke my drivers side when "testing the water" so to speak didn't even have any bulbs, so had to replace that and keep the normal bulb. And apparently the drivers side is easier, so I'm screwed

Sounds like this is a simple mod that VW dont want you doing!!!

Indeed
-
But worth the risk.
-
I'm trying to think of a different way to remove them.
Sat nav suction cup and pull hard?
Something behind the glass, I read cable ties as you can fasten multiple together?
-
Are the standard puddle lights an optional extra on the GTi ?
I cannot remember seeing them as an optional extra when "building" mine
-
I think they could be part of the luxury pack
-
I think they could be part of the luxury pack
Yep as far as I'm aware if you've spec'd the lux pack i.e folding mirrors then you will get the puddle lights...

Cool  I have ordered the luxury pack. Thanks guys!
Out of interest, are the puddle lights effective or a bit of a gimmick ?
Anyone got any pics of them illuminating the area around the car ?
-
Not the greatest of pics but you get the idea.

I suppose they are a bit of a gimmick...
-
When you've parked your car in an unlit gravel carpark and it's been pissin it down, they are definately not a gimmick!
-
I suppose they are a bit of a gimmick...
What do you expect them to do like? Light the street up!
Do exactly what the description is. PUDDLE LIGHTS
-
I've got them and find them useful, and not a gimmick. They've saved me from standing in something unpleasant in the dark before getting in the car and trampling it into my mats!
They also do a good job of providing just enough illumination when getting out of the car in a dark garage, if I've forgotten to pull the indicator stalk to activate the coming home function.
I got the luxury pack primarily for the folding mirrors, as my garage isn't the biggest, and folding the mirrors give a bit more clearance. The puddle lights are an added bonus.
-
I agree, they look nice but they should be standard IMO. People talk about BMW's being basic unless you spec them but puddle lights are standard on those.

NO NOT ALL...it's an opinion! You know what most people have

I agree, the lux pack is a must and really cheap as an option. Folding mirrors have saved many a potential smashed mirror as I drive on some very narrow roads plus the puddle lights are great when you are in an unlit area saved me getting mine and my passengers getting their feet wet on numerous occasions.
-
I've never found the puddle lights useful once in the last 3 years. Perhaps I just don't go dogging in dodgy car parks like the rest of you?

Whoa! Steady on there... Your not telling me you've never gone for a meal somewhere and the carpark lighting is rubbish, with a car parked either side of you and looked down the side of the car to see if there is any dents???
And the puddle lights don't help?? Whatever...

Nope can't say I have, but the puddle lights on my old car were under the door not under the mirrors, and I've not parked anywhere dark by other cars, close enough for them to damage it, for a long, long time, if ever.

Now't wrong with a bit of dogging, just ask MR GTD's mum!
Oh dear lol

Would have liked these purely for theming factor, dare I ask if they retrofit cheaply although I suspect on the answer
-
I am fairly sure I have seen a thread on here and remember it isn't cheap.
-
Thread tidied up
Now I suggest you grow up
-
Dont have these on mine but like you have said, dont think retrofit would be a cheap option epecially if you then start breaking the mirror glass. Think ill live without the puddle lights and just be careful where im parking.

Might just carry a torch in the door pocket, works out a lot cheaper!!!!

Got me programmer BTW

You can also fit lights in the bottom of the door were the reflectors are.
I have a kit to do just that as I miss them in the golf after using the Leon

Bugger........ I was hoping that the GTi had lights in the bottom of the doors rather than just reflectors

No, that will be the Skodas and Seats
However an easy retrofit.

I would be interested in seeing how it could be done.....
-
Remove the door panel, clip in the light to replace the current reflector, 2 wires to connect per door to the door controler in the door, re fit doorpanel repeat on other doors. Stand back and admire your work.
Some require coding to activate the voltage to the lights, some don't.

There use to be a good HOW-TO HERE (http://www.mk6golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,124.0.html) but the entire site seems to be down at the moment.
I think SteveP looked after it, maybe worth a PM to him for the instructions.

The mk5 site is having a few issues according to their Facebook page. It was hacked and has had issues since.

And there I was thinking that VW was a "premium brand" over Skoda nad Seat

What sort of lamps are they? Are they W5W and do you need ones with resistors buikt in so you dont get any error messages?
