ME vento front end (i expect the respray would take that all the way to the £200)
GO!
-
Same as lmao vento front all the way
-
Probably a 16v lump and gearbox and as much of the other parts needed. Or spend the 200 ona doner car
-
A set of new shocks for the front. Got new ones on the rear and they are showing the front up...
-
VR conversion or as said towards a donor car
-
been debating if i should colour match a vento front end. The colour of my car is maritime blue and the cans are crap! or go chalkboard black and draw something on my car each day Giggles to him self! -- been a long day guys---
-
I bought my Vento front for 50 quid in odd colours and had it prepped and sprayed professionally for 125 so only cost 175 altogether and looks loads better colour coded
-
I would buy a fleabay front mount kit for my agu conversion

Two new Tyres and new EZ shims
Maybe if I stripped my wheels down I could get my centres powdercoated.
Not much you can do with £200 :undecided:

can do a fair bit with £200 depends what you wanna do. everything for my car has been £100 or less.
Vento front ends seems popular.
-
Totally agree, everything ive purchased for mine has been under £200 as i hunt high and low for bargains.
-
Thatswhat I'm like. Got outbid lastnight by £1 on a brand new cat back as exhaust. Sold for £48
I currently have £50 to play with and I'm scanning eBay for thing I want to get with it. Mainly trying to find a bargain exhaust at the moment.
-
Agree with Tweed, for me at least there is not much you can do with £200. That would have got me half my exhaust system

-
I myt get a red seatbelt for that much lol
-
As I have already got a Vento front end, on the front of my Vento, I will have my rear wheel arches
tidied up...... and waste the rest on Beer !
-
Front mount intercooler and 16v starter motor - If I can find bargains on both that should come to just under £200 !
-
Don't know if this counts but just got a Vento front end for £160, N/S wing with deleted repeater for £20 and a US Spec front bumper for £25.
I know I've over spent by a fiver, but it's the closest I could get

WHERE!!! was it close to you to pick up? what should i type on ebay to look because i can only find one red one it wasn't close and others are on the vento cars still not close :-( fair play on the bumper im still looking for that to.
-
Well, when I posted the pics of my car after someone trashed it with a plant pot I was contacted on here, knowing where all the parts where available and all within 50 miles.
-
Just bought these  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150827992575?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
They are in realy good condition also well pleased with them

Nice colour concept interior and enough change to buy a pint and a packet of Pork Scratching to celebrate

Your Vento front end will turn up sooner or later bud
-
Vento fronts? Pfft. If I had £200 pound I'd be getting my roof resprayed red.
-
Actually scratch the vento front as i think i'd rather have leather..
-
full mulberry leather interior 3dr sold on ebay lastnight for £70. if only i had an extra tenna
-
Ideally i'd have dark grey ftw.
-
id want black again.
-
If it's an 8v then a cam, a 16v I'd probably go for polybushes all round.
-
yup my cambelt over due! Best stop playing with lady luck and get it replaced.
-
i think he ment an actual cam.
how much are better cams and what gains are had by them?
-
FACE-PALM!
-
How about some Eibach springs for £130 then spend the rest on bushes, top mounts etc.
-
Wheres the £130 eibach springs?
-
i think he ment an actual cam.

For an 8v then around £220 brand new, cheaper used obviously.
Gains depends on what cam you buy and what else has been done to the car. My 8v made 138hp with a rally spec cam, catback and airbox mods.
-
Ive been after schimmel cams for my 16v, but i think they only do them for the vr6

Are they better than Schrick Cams???

Where's the best place to get cams?
(sorry in advance for the very noob sounding question)

Cambridge

Wheel refurbs across my new gun metal 8v - thats if I buy it on Saturday :P

Are you aware of the problems with long duration/high lift cams on 16v ABF engines running a plenum?
-
Asking me if im aware of the problems with long duration/high lift cams on the 16v abf engines running a plenum...... Is like asking mr kipling if he knows anythink about cakes.

So you do then?
I don't lol

Lol actually i dont xD
It should be " is like asking mr kipling, if he knows anything about brain surgery"

Please explain I would like to know.
All I can think that idle would be sh!te, may have to set it at 1500rpm. And that it would be starved of air above 7000rpm.
I know enough but would like more info.
-
On a standard mk3, £200 would have to be spent on cheapo ebay coilovers. Cant see any other choice?

More to do with lobe clearance, emissions and driveability I think.

Ess three said problems running a plenum.
Maybe I should just leave before I get to deep into it

You get pulsing issues in the plenum with cams over approx 260 degree duration, which sends the MAP sensor crazy and caused major running issues below 3000 RPM especially in closed loop lambda mode.
You can't set the idle at 3000+...it will fail the MOT.
In fact, it will probably fail the MOT anyway with cams much over 260 degree duration and high lift.
Cam lobe clearance is not usually a problem on hydraulic cams, go solid lifters and 13mm+ cams and you need to clearance the head...but you can run 276 degree/12mm lift cams without clearance issues...but it still won't run on a plenum.
You may get it to run on standalone management with no MAP sensor, mapped Alpha-n.
Best way, stick to cams no larger than 260s, go mix and match on the cams, or go 268 or 276 on ITBs with standalone management.
Don't find out the hard (expensive) way...like I did.
-
That's what I waited to hear
Cheers dude
-
Ha, we both knew it was coming at some point.
-
Got to love the idea of running a mild cam and a oil pressure solenoid locking on to a high lift cam :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:

Whats your views regarding vr6 cams? Theres 262 268 276 288
Im under the impression youve had a tuned vr unless ive read wrong
Ill be going into cams sometime this year and not sure whats the best set (or mix). Idle isnt too much of a bother. Emission is ermm... well it passed its last MOT :lipsrsealed:
Obviously im going for schrick and spending the good half off £550 on the cams alone, need to uprate the followered and both sets of springs?
-
Brake pads and discs, wheel bearings, abs sensors, water pump, thermometer and gasket, expansion tank and a debadged grill for my vento front end.
Might have enough left over for a copy of Performance VW!!!!
-

Did you read about that guys MK3 blue? Alex i think his name was cant remember mags upstairs lol. but was so good to hear they finish his car off for him and wow a mk4 engine in a mk3 plus the rear window from a 3 door in a 5 door. that guy had vision. RIP.
-
From what I've read get 268 cam, shrick manifold, bit of porting, lightened crank and flywheel will get about 225hp and a rev happy engine

Err...no.
Not even close.
Try a fully re-worked head with 3mm larger inlet valves, 2mm larger inlet valves, new 3 angle valve seats, titanium retainers, lightweight lifters, US Mk4 head gasket to raise the compression, 2.9 bottom end, 2.9 opened up TB AND all of the list above..and you might be looking at 225 BHP. If you are lucky.
But by then you will have dropped about £4500 into the engine.
But if you DO all that...the result is epic.

For a road car: Schrick 268s.
And a Schrick manifold if you can find one...it replaces the dropped bottom end (due to the cams) and those two together give power and torque gains everywhere.
Not a cheap set up though.
For springs etc, you can go two ways: standard lifters (heavy), standard retainers (heavy) and uprated valve springs...which add paratitic losses due to the extra forces required to operate the springs.
Or use standard springs, titanium retainers and lightweight lifters, which cope just fine with 268 cams to 7500+ RPM and give the top end less work to do, not more.

mk4 engine in a mk3
I think the crossflow /mk4 lump was standard in the usa market mk3's

Engine just fitted...still saddled with a tragic standard VR6 'box (not the VR ratios with 3.67 FD + Quaife it has now) and NOT mapped properly...just a quick shakedown run
-
Would that be too loud for my Cabrio????
-
Yes!! I would love to have a go
-
Cheers ess_three good info
I've got a spare head that will be getting sent of to do some porting in the near future, mk4 HG will be on the cards too. I'll clean up all the valves like I've done to my current head (clean valves are like adding a lightened flywheel). The block will remain standard 2.8 because I've just rebuilt it... New bearings, rings etc and pistons de coked also
I've got a lightened flywheel already waiting to go on but will skim more when the time comes aswell as a new clutch obviously
Price wise a shrick manifold can sod off  I'll get some porting done to the origional manifold (inc lower) and find a 2.9 tb
Gettin all excited now
-
I'll clean up all the valves like I've done to my current head (clean valves are like adding a lightened flywheel).
Steady!! Clean valves will add a few BHP at best...or replace what may be lacking.
I've never seen a VR6 yet that's lost power due to dirty valves though.
The light flywheel will feel like you have added 40+ BHP...the valves, sadly not.
I'll get some porting done to the origional manifold (inc lower) and find a 2.9 tb
Get a 2.9 upper manifold - the lower is the same.
The 2.9 has a far bigger volume in the plenum.
-

When I recon'd my head about 2month ago now the engine had done about 207'000miles, after de-coking the lot the way it rev'd up was instantly obvious, it wasn't down on power before (that I know off)
But then my rings went about 500miles later and that's when I decided strip it all.
How do you tell the difference between manifolds? 2.8 & 2.9
My lightened flywheel is about 7 1/2 kilo can I take it more?
Thanks for the good replies
-
LOL set someones alarm off.
When you get a vr and put on an unrestricted (noise) exhaust on you'll be doing that too! Mines bad for doing it in carparks when I can get in them
-

Turn them over...the 2.9 has a large plemum where as the 2.8 has what like a big runner, and casting ribs where the 2.9 has plenum.
My lightened flywheel is about 7 1/2 kilo can I take it more?
That's not too bad...I think you can go to 6.5 Kg ish if you really know what you are doing...but 7.5 is pretty good.
You really need to know where to remove metal if you are going really light though.
-

Although that VR6 has a straight through, no cat, tinny as hell, awful sounding exhaust (in my view) its the induction noise that hits you.
It's awesome.
That car runs a BMC CDA carbon intake, large bore TB, Schrick manifold, fully re-worked and match ported to a one-off Blydenstein big valve head...and it makes a fine noise!
-
Still on the subject of avoiding the thread title.....
Ive been wanting a short intake manifold commonly used for FI purposes, mainly for aesthetic reasons and cleaning the bay.
Could this actually make a difference over a ported standard manifold? Presumably it could be getting a good air flow keeping it cool, paired with one of them neuspeed gaskets that reduce heat soak? I have lots too think about
Before i start any of this though, im re-newing my cooling system
