Ah, but over how many miles?
I've seen loads of these pics taken just after the trip has been reset whilst rolling downhill.
-
I can usually average 65-70mpg now every day going to work the trip is 20 miles average speed 30-40 miles an hour this was over a little further & was reset last night after filling up. I would say defo not the norm though  as unless i am driving to work i tend to drive a bit faster then i am closer to averaging 50mpg

I rule the roost on this Sad B&£^E*d topic!

Quite fancy another stab, now the temperatures have gone up, the above was over 28 mile route, mainly motorway doing Granny speeds.
-
If you boys can do that, just wait until I get hold of the keys for my weedy engined GT.

Snooze fest!!
Haven't taken to a motorway yet but am heading to Devon in June for a break so are see what I get, very much doubt I will see 80+mpg tho...are be happy to see late 50's/ or early 60's.
-
Best I've seen in my Gtd is 39mpg  My chipped Bora PD150 would easily achieve 45.
-
Best I've had was a genuine 73 mpg on my work run (approx 30 miles), when I did it I also took pics of the other fuel computer readings ie miles covered, time etc and the miles are on all pics of course
I picked up a new GT TDI DSG for the lads out on the road 3 weeks back and they are struggling to better 45 mpg at the mo but they are most defiantly not driving in a fuel friendly manner and they don't have a remap either.
Shall we have an MPG challenge?
Rules would be:
You must video the fuel computer from start to finish OR provide pics of all the data on comp 1 ie miles, time, ave speed etc?
Journey must be a reasonable length ie not 50 meters going down hill in

I will crash if i try film while moving  also is taking it out of gear while going down hills allowed lol

I used bluetack and stuck it to the steering column. Also coasting is worse for fuel economy going down hill as the fuel has to be used to keep the engine ticking over, in gear going down hill, it can shut off the fuel (or use very very little) as the wheels turn the engine over.

ANYTHING goes as long as we can verify it :smug:
-
I am off work for a week now but will give it a go when i get back, no point when i am not working asd drive very differently
-
You need to be quoting miles per tank for a valid comparison. Fill the tank, reset the trip drive as far as you can, post pics of the trip and mpg readouts. Quoting figures for traveling to work, but not for traveling back again are a little misleading.
-
Best I've seen in my Gtd is 39mpg
The best I've ever seen is 62mpg doing 70mph on a dual carriage way, obviously I had a tail wind. Normally motorway cruising shows 55mpg at 70mph.

I cant drive sensibly for that long  thats over 600 miles

I'll have to try that one day

I agree that the really challenge would be the best mpg over a tankfull of diesel. I'm currently on 62mpg after nearly 300 miles of mixed driving. I reckon I can better that, so am going to fill up and start again.

It wud be great if I saw those figures on my impending journey..
I've got around 145miles left till I have to fill up, but I'm hoping it will last me till next sunday(which it will ) and then fill her up before starting my journey to Devon on fathers day for a weeks break, looking forward to seeing what I get...
Q. wud peeps with cruise recommend using it to get the most mpg, it might be a silly quest but I've never had cruise before lol...
The journey is 127miles and 3hrs 16mins - google maps
Ta for the feedback!
-
cruise all the way.
-
cruise all the way.
Cruise is good for keeping your speed down, therefore saving fuel, but a gentle right foot will save you more. It's all about conservation of momentum and antisipation. Rolling down hills then lightly building up momentum towards the bottom to carry you up the other side with the least effort. Cruise control can't read the terrain like you can.
Drive the car like you would casually ride a bicycle for best fuel ecconomy.

Or left  it's DSG and I only use the one foot to drive...
Thanks for the tips..

Have you tried left foot braking? It makes a boring day very interesting indeed
-
How does left foot braking work in a drive by wire car? Whenever I've tried it the ESP says "??????WTF??????" and the revs disapear, dispite my right foot pushing the throttle through the floor. In the Mk2 however...

It doesn't. I just find it really hard to regulate the pressure with my left foot as it's used to stamping the clutch down so I nearly go through the windscreen, hence the "very interesting" day
-
I have a DSG cus I suffer with a disability that affects the right side of my body, and is the sole reason I only have a auto license...Oh happy days lol
I did try a manual before taking my license, it was in a car park at night with no other car about luckily and I either put far to much gas on or not enough, it was quite funny tho as I nearly hit a lamp post lol...
-
Drove bevs cab today and smashed 65mpg over six miles during rush hour, very impressed!

Did 900 miles in my old Bora, but as you say it's about 600 miles I get at the moment in the Jetta (Mk5, 2.0ltr Sport) But that's without really trying and the wife driving mostly.
-
Mines starting to loosen up very nicely and I'm seeing good figures with just town and top start driving, looking forward to the Devon trip on Sunday...
-
My mk5 GT loosened up lovely around the 10-12k mark.
-
I'm a bit late with this but I can always get a lot more MPG without using the cruise. As others have said its all about the anticipation and reading the road which the cruise can't do.
I only ever use it on those average speed camera stretches.
-
Well I'm now back from my hols  Devon is such a lovely part of the country, myself and the family loved it so much at we've already paid to return next year..
On the economy front it wasnt that good at all really, I get better round town doing stop start driving which is weird...on the way there I didn't use cruise and I wasn't going particularly fast...70-75 at most as my mrs is the worst passenger(and I mean the worst) watch that car in front, he/she is like 50mtrs in front on me for goodness sake, oh and watch that lorry parked up, they might pull out on us....Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
You get the picture lol
Anyways doing 70-75 without cruise I was averaging 46-47mpg and with cruise(on the way back) it was the same...
I think its broken...
Any how I enjoyed the drive and the hols none the less....
-
those 1/4 hills in devon always screw my economy up, I just can't go up those things slow...
Glad you had a good time, my spend in fuels plummeted this week, been told I can't drive as I have a busted tendon, grrrrr. Worst part is missed a very big racing event in my sporting calendar, much to the annoyance of the rest of my squad.
GRRRRRR!!!!
Still yey, no fuel to pay for, wooo!!!!!
-
I can't get over how good the 140 is on fuel. I was doing my best to see how many miles I could get from a tankfull until yesterday when the day didn't exactly go to plan. I did the 100 mile trip to Inters after a delayed start, so let's just say I was making up for lost time. Got to Bruntingthorpe and had a look at the mpg expecting it to be hammered, but not too shabby. An indicated 50mpg for the trip

My 170 was close to 50-55 on the way there, thanks mostly to the 2nd part of the journey which was a little more relaxed. I only managed 40mpg on the way home :lipsrsealed:
-
I went steady on the way back and got 62mpg. That's only a 20% increase in mpg over the "making progress" journey in the morning, so got me thinking I really shouldn't be thinking that pushing on is costing me that much more.
The Golf is a totally different beast to my V6 TDI Passat. There is a vast difference between steady cruising and pressing on mpg in that.
-
how many miles until the GTD engine "loosens" up as it were?

No, I don't think it's broken, Mr GTD. It will take some time to fully loosen up (mine's not there yet either). Gives you an excuse for driving it more!
I saw 63mpg at the weekend, just going with the flow of the traffic on an A road over a distance of about 25 miles. I think the best I've seen so far on a long-ish journey (airport run, 150 miles) was 64-ish mpg. MFD is currently showing just a shade under 54mpg for overall distance covered since it last reset itself a couple of months ago.
Welcome back, glad you had a good holiday!

I haven't got any results to post yet as my car still has the same diesel in it from before this thread started. Now that's economy for you.
