Has anyone else had issue with the quality/thiness of the paint on your car? I have 2 stone chips on my bonnet & 3 what looks like small tears in the paint on the bumper/diffuser, not happy at all  i have only had the car since the 1st of March
-
My brother has just traded a white Roc for another one but diesel, we both noticed that the paint on it wasn't great, he had the same sort of stone chips your talking about, would be interesting to see if the golf has the same issue?
-
I haven't had any probs like this yet but the paintwork is shocking for such an expensive car. Over spray where the painting isn't completely finished off e.g. panel gaps, door handles when pulled out etc etc, really thin paint to the point where you can see the primer on the rear bumper etc
-
If I can see the primer through the paint on my rear bumper, or anywhere else for that matter, they'll be getting it back!
-

Im very annoyed for 28k car to have such poor quality paint really isn't acceptable it's so thin it doesnt even look like there is primer lol
-
Yep there's been a few threads on this and it seems to affect the CW paint more so than others...I personally haven't had any issues as of yet, touch wood!
-
No problems here either, two years old and the odd couple of stone chips as to be expected.
In fact I think the MK6 paint is tougher than the MK5 as Seagull poo doesn't seem to mark the lacquer like it did on it.
-
Two fairly big chips on 2.9k. Not sure there is any point fixing them until there's a good group of them...?

I bet if I told you where to look you'd have it lol. But I won't

I don't really want some crappy bodyshop respraying my bumper for something you can only notice if you bend down and look. The colour match between the car and the plastic parts is bad enough without someone spraying it who doesn't give a sh1t!
-
don't get me started on this
found what would be another QC fail at nissan regarding paint on my GTI.
right next to the top of the windscreen on the roof was what i though a little bit of wax or polish left over - oh no... its a couple of specs of dirt in the paint from the factory. also has a couple on the boot lid by the spoiler.
are we back in the 1980's here? dust and dirt in the paint on a new car?
sh!te quality.

Same here Mr GTD, no issues yet, other than a couple of stone chips on the bonnet. Can't say I've found any areas of poor paint coverage or other problems such as dirt or foreign bodies embedded in the paint.
The paint on my MK6 seems to be better quality than it was on my MK4 and MK5, which both suffered much worse from stone chips early on in their lives. They were both pearlescent black, so don't know if pearl black was more susceptible to chipping than Carbon Grey that I have now, although modern water-based paints are less resilient to damage in general than the old oil based paints.
I've got front and rear mudflaps on my car. I know that some owners don't like them, but I do think they help to reduce stone chip damage on the lower bodywork, even though they don't do much to stop the car getting dirty.
-
I'm seriously considering, pretty much as I drive out the showroom with mine, having it clear wrapped on the front bumper, wings and bonnett. Anyone thought/had this done?
-
it will probably have marks on it before it even leaves the show room. its been known to happen with certain dealerships....
-
In that situation no money or cars will be changing hands...
-
I must be in the minority. I've had a few stupid niggles, replacement windscreen being the most annoying one, but I must say my paintwork, candy white, is still absolutely factory fresh after 11,000 miles! Not a single mark or stone chip. Impressive I think.
-
Nearly 38,000 miles and there is probably more touch up paint than paint on it now.

+1 and I wouldn't care if it was three years down the line either!

Check this out;

I've not had it done but I've seen this discussed on some of the USA forums, and it does offer protection. The main potential issues seem to be;
- Some owners experience discolouration over time - on light coloured cars it might take on a yellowy appearance.
- Durability? The film might also get damaged by stone chipping, so if this does happen, it could look look tatty over time and need replacing
- Most kits only offer partial protection to the most vulnerable panels, so you'll probably still have problems from stone chips
- The edges of the protective film might be visible (probably depends on the colour of the car) and may lift over time
I don't know what the cost is of getting it done, but a consideration needs to be cost of having protective film fitted v's cost of potential future paintwork repairs to panels if they become heavily stone chipped and you dont feel confident about repairing them yourself (touching in, wet sanding and polishing).
-
There was also paint issues with the GTD, but I have to say the Tig is very good apart from 2 stone chips
-
If you guys are wondering where all the paint goes... take a look inside the new VW Up
-
I 100% need to do something as 3 months old 4000 miles in & I have numerous chips
-
Not driving so close to the vehicle in front will significantly reduce your chances of getting chips.
-
Snoopy had a whole thread of paint issues up and running
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=150136.0
but it looks like most if not all his pictures have been taken off!!

Pretty much GTD! Bit more sophisticated than the supermarkets finest though
I've got a Ventureshield (can I put brand names on this forum?!) on my bike on the tank where leathers rub, and in 4 years it hasn't discoloured, lifted or worn, baring in mind whenever I'm using the bike my leathers are rubbing against it. My last bike without protection wore through the paint after less time (and behave yourselves talking about rubbing leather and protection...)
Some cars, coupes usually, have some in front of the rear wheels as standard. If I have it done I'll report back.
-

I had my 911 done with Defendall clear film, front end, sills and in front of the rear arches...and in 5 years, not a stonechip...except in the areas where the film wasn't fitted.
I had some edges lifting sadly, which looked unsightly...but the protection it offered was brilliant.
No discolouring of the clear film either...and it took a shine very well.
-
The paint on mine is excellent, no overspray, no thin or missing paint as reported by some on here. When it's polished and waxed it looks fabulous.
You can't blame VW for stone chips, it's inevitable you'll get some. As mentioned by others, not driving too close to the car in front helps; also not driving fast on roads with loose gravel or chippings on them.
I think some of you guys probably get a lot of stone chips because of where and how you drive.
-
Every 2010 one I have seen has had paint coverage the same as mine and I've looked at must be over 100 of them now. Also effects mk5. It just shows up more on some paint colours than others. Some show as white, some show as grey, some yellow some as spekle white, some as pink. Vw did change to improve this about a year ago (same time they changed the under bonnet paint finish)
-
It's ok saying don't drive close to the car in front, but when I've been off roading, on tracks if you're doing 30 mph everyone leaves a minimum of 100yds gap to avoid stones and rocks coming up and mainly hitting windows. Little chippings off the road will fling a lot further so unless you're gong to drive 300 yds behind everyone it's not going to help that much!

Well Big Dave, if you want to go off roading/on tracks you'll have to put up with stone chips. I was talking about normal driving on public roads.

Snoopy, I know you complained about yours from day one. I've not seen as many as you to compare, the few I've been able to examine closely were in the dealers, but I haven't seen the effects you complain about on any of them. Perhaps they let out a "bad batch" in 2010 that all ended up in the same part of the country?

My ED35 has one tiny chip on the front bumper and the rest of the paint work is great. My previous CW MK6 was also great only 3 or 4 chips in 2.5 years, however my ED30 which was black (non met) was terrible. I had to have the bonnet painted before I passed it on. I put this down to the fact that the ED30 paint did not have a coat of lacquer like the CW and CG. When I look back at my previous Golfs the MK2 was great MK3 not so good, MK4 poor and MK5 the worst.
-
RickS Maybe, but my car came from Wayside Milton Keynes so different to the ones up here (which come in at the port of tyne) with local registrations.
I have seen 60 reg with same finish, that lad from Newcastle who always asked millions of questions on the forum who ordered the carbon grey 3 door. (also ordered a Volvo XC90 iirc) his was not as bad as mine but still suffered. Polos also had this finish. VW do seem to have improved them as the new one in the showroom last March did not have the wing finish mine does for example. Anyway ive resigned myself to VW just been a cut price brand now with mostly crap dealers. Seriously thinking of cancelling the A1 order and buying a Hyundai I20style just for the build, reliability and after sales service.

It's not a complete solution but it reduces significantly, motorways seem to be the worst for stone chipping the front of cars in my experience.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't expect light damage when off roading...that advice is to stop a rock going through your windscreen.
But if you have to drive as far as I say behind a car doing 30mph to avoid a smashed windscreen, imagine how far you have to be behind the car in front to completely avoid a small stone hitting your bonnet and knocking some paint off.
For the record my Leon that has 50000 on the clock now looks like the front end has been sandblasted

You would think motorways would be the "cleanest" in terms of smooth surfaces, no stones, etc? I suppose speed is a factor.... and trucks... especially the ones carrying loads of gravel!
-
For the price of the car the paint should be better in my opinion,my front bumber is bad,it's gettin embarrassing, trip to the sprayers nxt month
-
The paint on my Mk6 is crap, being blunt.
It's got a lovely shine...but it's paper thin, barely covered in places, and chips off if you look at it too long.
My car had 11,000 miles on it, doesn't get used for commuting, there isn't a Motorway for over 100 miles etc...so it's not getting heavy usage.
By comparison, I have a Mk3 GTI 16v that's been in my family since new, it was used as a daily commuting car for the first 5 years of it's life, has 86,000 miles on it...and it has less stonechips than the Mk6. The Mk3 is 16 years old.
Don't get me wrong...the Mk3 isn't perfect and the wings/tailgate are rusting (but so are many Mk5s!) but the paint quality is in a different league.
I am deepy disappointed with how the Mk6 paint is holding up.

+1 totaly agree its really bad on the MK6 esp in Candy white

Sorry for digging out an old thread, but was the resolution to this issue for those who have returned their Golf's to the dealer? I've just finished detailing the wife's cab and the front end is shocking. She assures me that she's not driving up the arse of other cars which may explain the chips but the front bumper has a look of a water reflection in it but everywhere is bone dry(I know that's hard to believe). Not happy!
-
i was driving along yesterday and the road suddenly stopped for road works - tons and tons of that loose chippings and tar sh!t all over. literally a few inches deep. it was a joke.
no way was i driving thru that so did a u turn but while wailting for a break in the traffic wagons and cars went by me kicking up dirt and gravel really close to my car . i thought my car was going to end up getting battered with stone chips.
for the next couple of miles all i could hear were stones pinging off the bottom and side off my car! horrendous. thankfully i have mud flaps on the front which i think saved ALOT of damage.
got it home and washed it and found (touch wood) no stone chips but a few horrible tar spots which i polished off.
i dont believe the councils can get away with these sh!te road repairs.
i have maybe 2 or 3 stone chips on my front bumper and a coulpe on the bonnet and windscreen but i always make sure I'm not following cars too closely.
te paint on the bumpers feels really soft though. if you rub a bit of tar/dirt off the bumpers with your fringier nail you can feel it is very soft compared to the panels.

+1 mate, to the point where a Lafarge lorry chipped my windscreen cos the driver thought he'd overtake me - knob! They've accepted liability and are going to replace the windscreen.
-
I just got a stone chip on my bumper. Who would you recommend? I heard 'chips away' are good....
-
Just be careful with chips away as I believe that they are all franchised. Might be worth speaking to ya dealer and see who they use for smart repairs I.e. small, non body shop work.

i had a paint pen for my clio with a buff pad thing on the end.
you touched the chip in thick, kept it for 15 mins and while the paint is nearly dry you wet the buff pad thing and rub it over the repair to flatten it off
worked really well. once done the stone chips were invisible. really good idea
i have a VW one for my car but it doesn't have the buff pad thing.
i might buy another reanult one and use that.
