Stripping the threads out the sump is quite common, they're made from some strange alloy I think, which is probably why. It will probably have to be helicoiled.

Better to replace the sump, you do not want the plug to fall out.

If your planning on going low at any point i'd get this:

http://www.awesomegti.com/hybrid-1-8t-shallow-sump-conversion-kit

Comes with everything you need too, including a new pickup pipe

i have just replaced my sump. it was £37 new delivered. beware if you dont have decent tools. there are 2 allen key bolts hidden and they are a b!tch to get to.

there are 2 types of sump. one has an oil sensor fitted and one does not soi make sure you get the right one

asda do 5l fully synthetic for 20 notes. im not sure on the a rating though

LOL

Quantum Platinum 10/40 semi synth

what has that got to do with anything ?
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: JimBR on 22 May 2012, 13:02
Needs to meet VW specifications I think mate. I'm not sure if the Asda oil does?

There's very little difference in price really so it's worth going for OEM oil, 1.8T's are notorious for building up sludge so its worth using good oil which meets all criteria set by VW.
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: monty9120 on 22 May 2012, 15:06
this was the reason why i said i didnt know the ratings for the asda oil

so your telling me a 10w40 semi synthetic is better? i very highly doubt it.

check a ratings and pick which one covers your car. i have 5w40 fully synthetic a3 in mine
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: JimBR on 22 May 2012, 15:16
Oh I know, I suggested quantum platinum which is 5w40 and fully synthetic

Just to add - if you know someone with a Costco card, they sell Mobil 0w40 'New life' for £29.89 for 5 litres.

I have this in my car currently.  Previously had Castrol Edge 5w30, which is £35 from ASDA, but its only 4 litres.

Castrol didnt need topping up over 6000 miles, where as the Mobil had needed topping up once.  But that may be because the Mobil has exclusively done motorway speeds and the Castrol did local miles.

halfords oil castrol edge 5 40w = £60

May be expensive but is defo worth it, people put cheap oil in & wonder why they have so many problems with their cars. I have only ever used castrol in my Mk4

VW only recommend who ever they have a deal with at the time, i wouldnt go just by their recommendation

dont tell me your someone thats a brand snob. most oil is made by leading manufacturers just rebottled.

its the specification that counts. not what make is on the bottle

I don't see why you'd bother though. You can go to TPS and get the oil your car came from the factory with for the same amount.

the poster asked for oil at a decent price, thats what i posted. it was £5 cheaper then anyone else put down. i have noticed on here people dont seem to listen to the posts too well

if vw oil is on offer. bargain :)

as you said most of it comes from the same refinery its just packaged into different bottles for retail as long as the spec is the same there should not be any problems where you buy it from

i ran 530 long life in my 1.8t to find i was using alot of oil and smoking, put it on 540 it got abit better, so went for 10.40 platinum semi and it doesnt use any, and you say cheap oil isnt poor? i have no clear proof but i all i can say is i ran my focus on cheap oil once it went black within no time then changed to proper stuff 5k later so it wasnt asif i the engine just got flushed through with the cheap stuff) ford oil  which was £17 on trade and it took a good few months to go black .. why bother geting cheap crap when you can get genuine at the same price or just a quid or so more. if oil doesnt matter why dont f1 use morrisons finest ?
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: cullygti on 22 May 2012, 22:51
cos they dont run a 1.8t

You may be correct and it may be the same stuff with a different label, however for total piece of mind i'd rather spend an extra £5!
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: Kerrse on 23 May 2012, 08:27
I don't agree all oil is the same just because the specification is the same, i certainly wouldnt be putting asda oil in my car to test your theory or whatever vw recommend as that changes depending on what deal they have going.

I will stick to using Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 may cost more but think it's worth it & has kept my Golf going nicely to it's current 140k
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: monty9120 on 23 May 2012, 18:41
my golf has 160k so im not doing too bad i use my local car shops oil. which is made by comma
Title: Re: best oil for the price
Post by: golf-sib on 23 May 2012, 18:55
Oil is the same to me, if its the correct grade and specification it works well, I've used comma and acdelco and never had any problems, instead I rate them more than the expensive stuff.

just to clarify euro car parts normally have some good deals on. with the discount they are very well priced if you cant get the vw stuff
