Post by: D Squared on 20 May 2012, 12:41
What oil is best to use on my high miler 8 valve (AGG) GTi?

Any experiences/reccomendations?

Cheers

10/40w semi-synthetic and don't go too cheap, everyone has their favorites and i've been using millers oil for years.

been wondering the same for the 16v GTi.. I've topped her up with 10w-40, but apparently the vw owners manual that comes with the car also recommends 5w-30, same as my little fiesta???

I stuck with 0w40 or 5w40 with my old 2E 2.0, once used 5w50 cos I knew I was gonna drive it long distance, fully loaded and high speed through Germany ;) And Mobil 1 5w50 was cheaper at that point than 0w40. It had 380.636km (236.517mi) on the clock when scrapped and the engine still ran well then (needed less than 1/4L on 1000mi).

Personally I don't see why you'd use 10w40, not even saving money really when you can get 5 liters of 5w40 for less than 30£... in particular if you're running a lot of short trips...
gonna stop here though otherwise this'll turn into a useless oil thread (again)...

VW 5w30 LL3 504.00/507.00 is not too bad if not used for LL ;)

Other than that why pay more for LL3 if a 5w40 or even 0w40 that fulfills VW 502.00 (and/or MB229.5) is cheaper than that.
0/5w40 are also thicker at higher temperatures than most 5w30 and 10w40... could continue but my recommendation is a good 5w40 - or 0w40 if you running mostly short distances.

I think 5w/30 is too thin for the 8v and 16v, they are not exactly high tech motors and most will have done reasonable miles by now, 10w/40 semi is the best option in my opinion.

I use 5w40 fully synth.

Thinner oil when cold so smoother when cold, and not too thin when hot. Thin oils are designed for race/turbo applications.

5w30 is not necessarily too thin for a 2.0 GTI (8 and 16V), they have oil-water heat exchangers, which keeps the oil temp at very reasonable levels, I have not even exceeded 110°C full out for miles and miles on the Autobahn (with a fully packed estate)... VW LL3 is surprisingly stable at high temperatures and has about the same HTHS as cheap 10w40 oils. 0w30 LL2 is however $hit and will fück your engine, same as Ford's recommendation to run A1/B1 or A5/B5 oils...

Would be more worried with 5w30 oil in a 1.8 where you dont have an oil h/x.....

wheter you run 10w40 or 5w40 or even 5w30 is down to you... visco is not most important anyway but should roughly match conditions you're driving in... if you're mostly doing 1-5mi trips 10w/15w/20w won't be the best for your engine, then would go 0w or 5w...

I do appreciate what your saying but i think your looking too deeply in to it, if your running a high temperature turbo engine or something high revving and temperamental then oil choice becomes much more important but for an old 8v or 16v i think frequent changes with mid price 10w/40 or 5w/40 as Khare says would be much more beneficial.

Very much agree to regular changes (you should have seen the oil in the poor Endura 1.3 in my gf's Ford KA  )
Trying to say also that visco does not necessarily have to do with quality (you can find some £hit 5w40s and some good 10w40s with latest MB specs).

.. i run 5w30 A1 castrol magnatec in my little fiesta 1.3 and it's worked wonderfully  but got that recommendation from the castrol website.

i've put my golf's reg in the castrol site and this is what it tells me:

Recommended: EDGE 5W-30

VOLKSWAGEN

Golf 2.0 GTi 16V

P-Reg

1993 - 1997

Recommended for Engine (P):    EDGE 5W-30    4.0 or
                                                Magnatec 10W-40 A3/B4

   Manual Transmission    Universal 75W-90    (a)

   Automatic Transmission    -

   Differential    From Gearbox

   Coolant    Refer to Technical    6.5

Brake Fluid    React Performance DOT 4

Power Steering (where fitted)    Refer to main dealer

   Wheel Bearings    Multipurpose Grease

a.    Capacity unquoted

1.    Service Interval QG1 = Flexible Service Interval (Long-life service). Service Interval QG0/2 = Time/distance dependent interval (non-flexible)

Engine - Miles Max    10000
Engine - Km Max    15000
Engine - Months Max    12

So, Edge 5w30 because that's their expensive fancy brand and they want you to shut up and give them your money, and 10w40 A3/B4 because that's the less expensive stuff that will also suit your car :P

That oil I'd NOT put in any car (same with VW LL2)... very low hths that Ford promotes for fuel economy but it does not save enough fuel to pay for the increased wear in the engine...

Hmm.. fair point mate. I've not paid attention to hths much before.. suppose i should really  :embarassed:

might swap for something else next time i service the fezzy..

very helpful this forum! learned something new every time i visited lol

EDIT: While we're talking about it, anyone know where to find a list of the HTHS ratings of oils?

This is a good start for anyone interested in oil specs.
http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Oil_Labelling_Explained (http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Oil_Labelling_Explained)
High Temperature High Shear is discussed towards the bottom of the page.

I was thinking that my engine never sees oil at 150°C. But - while the temperature gauge might read 90° I have no idea what it is in the cylinder bores and on the cam lobes where it really matters.

Note that Silkolene Pro S has been rebranded.

On my now sold 1.8t i would.use the very best oil around and something thin to get straight up to the turbo but with my golf i would just put 10w40 in. id steer clear of halfords own but any castrol/mobile 1 part synthetic will be fine and as engines get older id.keep to a thick oil as tolerances reduce as parts wear

thanks for comments guys... till present i have given it a change of oil once a year, after around 8000 miles a year, and have been using VW spec LL2 (as it was free..).. was think of using 10W 40 as a few of you have mentioned.. so may try either the Castrol GTX or Millers stuff..

i'm assuming different brands of the same grade oil will have different HTHS ratings? don't see many HTHS ratings published, will read that wikipedia page and see if it doesn't explain how to determine it from other stats of oil
Title: Re: what oil?

HTHS cannot be determined from other oil specs as such, it has to be measured with a viscometer or rather a rheometer... So if unsure just buy one (they are >30k though).

Joking aside, hths is usually in spec sheet (maybe labelled as visco at 150), along with visco at 40 and 100 °C, TBN, pour point, etc
Google usually does a good job locating those, otherwise email the manufacturer or distributor.

If uncertain what to buy, make sure it's ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 and then look for VW 502.00 (petrol), if it has that it's usually already useable, better still if it actually has MB 229.5, that's currently the most strict norm when it comes to cars (except 229.51 which only matters if you have a particulate filter). If you are running a Diesel the equvialent would be 505.00 (but LOADS fulfill this old standard, so not really an indicator), or 505.01 if it's a Pumpe-Düse = usually refered to as PD TDI.

Oils with VW502.00 usually are 5w40, 5w30, 0w40, a very few 0w30 (but then these aren't usually LL2) and even a few good 10w40s.
