Title: step by step airbrush pics as we go. now the battery box
Post by: stainesy on 08 May 2012, 16:32
my best mate has been contacted by a man who wants his custom chopper airbrushed with ver fine detail.
just thought some of you may be interested in seeing the steps as it gets done

so far the petrol tanks has been painted a copper colour then masked round them had a white layed down.
them masked fully and had the design roughly drwn onto it as its a very detailed. then the first lower layer background scalpulled out and airbrushed the first shades then got as far as scalpulling a couple of the cogs out and laying the first background colour for them.
this will be a kind of 3d design so i will keep taking pics as it goes.

Great work,
I used to do stuff like that years ago, and lost the patience to do it years ago
Any of that going to be brushed free hand?
And is the bike going to be called "Tourbillon" by any chance! :lipsrsealed:

just a little bit of shading on a few litle bits

loads to do yet only get the odd hour here and there to do this.
toothed cogs will be wooden and non toothed cogs brass.

still has alot of masking on and it is being peeled off and airbrushed bit by bit to give a multi layered cog effect. so the overspray is not how it will look. still alot to be done and then once the masking has all gone it will be done free hand.
this design has a mixture of wood metal brass water and marble in it so even bits that look painted at the mo some of it is masking to be peeled off.

still in progress. loads to do yet. but just a quick look at the mo.
you cant really notice but alot of the bits you see you think are painted are still masked up so will change alot from this.

bit more done now. still loads to go. bit of light glare on bottom left thats not how its painted its the light in the pic
by the way the cogs and some parts are ment to look old and not perfect shape
the blke want it to reprisent industry over the ages from old wooden typr works to modurn ish meterials. its ment to be a kind of water pumping plant ish type deal
on one side of the tank will have a big piston drawing water into it and on the other side the same pushing water out of it. its hard to explain

all the masking off and time to do all the free hand stuff
pictures wont really do it justice as you cant really see all the fine details. like the cracks in the clock face and the wood grain and stuff.

I'll be honest, I think a lot of work has gone into it, but it just seems a bit all over the place to me, like nothing really ties it all together.

Sorry to be hating.

My personal opinion is, I dont like it, depth seems lost by the use of too many colours, and a lack of precision to many of the components, and the girl looks ill... also not liking the copper base colour, it lacks depth. I personally think that the tank shot in silver or gold, then detailed with black, then covered in a Root beer candy, would look stunning, but I do love monochrome airbrush work.

Technically its superb, artist is a master at thinking ahead

If the owner likes it, then its mission accomplished.

Thanks for all the feedback given, I really appreciate it.  The idea of the silver base, black line detail and then candy over the top reminds me of something I saw on the UK Airbrush Forum recently.  It looks great I agree however in this instance it wasn't what the client wanted.  He was over the moon with the final piece.  The tank is the heart of the bike aesthetically so the artwork is intentionally busy as elements of the artwork are going to link in with parts of the rest of the bike.  I will grab some pictures once the entire bike has been built, hopefully it will give the tank some context.  The idea around the artwork (and for that matter the entire bike) is based around a style called 'steam punk' which is a cross between present day engineering in a Victorian type style - I guess that's why it looks like a 'worn fairground ride' type style in places.

Also the amount of time spent on this piece is in the region of 60 hours - to airbrush exact mechanisms would of taken a lot longer to do, increasing the cost so it is sometimes a compromise (everyone is on a tight budget these days!).

Honestly thank you for the comments, when I begin my next job shortly (another bike) I will take these on board and hopefully it will improve me as an airbrush artist - your only as good as your last job is my motto!

PS:  I will post up other pics however I don't want to drown out this thread so will post in a fresh one in a few weeks time.  Gotta lower my ride and sort out my MK3 Gti golf first!

Cheers

James

technically its brilliant, for example, the Ironman T-shirt is brilliant. Can really see the work you can do and its top notch.

I just really don't like the tank piece, it don't feel like it fits together well.. Sorry mate.

Great work James, just not my cuppa tea... Today I went to the Hot Rod Nationals at Billing, and caught up with some blasts from the past, murals by the likes of Geoff Ridgway, and Ray Mumford, both were at the cutting edge artists, and both capable of the most precise work i've ever seen... are you familiar with there work?
I have some pics somewhere of stuff I used to do, but haven't got a clue where they are, I'll try and dig them out..
I still have all my Leaf books, and Badger kit, scalpels and frisk film.... sort of makes me want to have a go again, but cant be doing with the sore eyes and stiff necks anymore
Great work though, keep it up

Thom

Thom, cheers buddy. i could tell from your feedback that you are a fellow artist, if you could dig out some pics that would be really good to see. The way i see it is with all the aches and hours working on a piece you still look forward to seeing the buzz the customer gets when you hand over the finished piece then grab your stuff and start again! james.
