Just got myself an Ipad3 64gb:smiley:
I'm not really up with Apple products tbo...... I've only ever owned a second generation Ipod so lots to learn.
I got it from PC World for £579. I also went for 2 year insurance on top of that for £65. I don't normally opt for insurance however the Ipad's look pretty breakcable to me especially with a 3.5 year old running abut the house.

I wouldnt worry to much about damage if you buy a decent leather case, taken my ipad on holiday, work all sorts never had any issues with damage.
I use mine mainly for watching films, just use handbrake to convert films to mp4 as i refuse to pay the itunes price for them.
-
they're pretty hardy devices, my sister's kids are nuts and everything is broke within a month or two but it's lasted nearly a year  or she hasn't said it's broke

Yes I can see me watching films on the Ipad.
So where do you normally download films from then (legally ) Also how do you transfer the films on to the Ipad?
Sorry a novice with regard to this.

If you don't download a film on the iPad from the official iTunes store, then the other way to get a film on the iPad is:
Download film on PC > convert to mp4 file (.mov usually) > open iTunes software on PC > import the file > then plug iPad into the PC > when iPad pops up in iTunes copy the film to the iPad.
Sadly you have to use the iTunes software, you can't just drag and drop like you can with a flash drive.
If you install the BBC iPlayer app on the iPad you can watch a few movies on that, but you can't download them to keep.
Of course there's also Lovefilm for watching films but again you can't download them to keep.
There are a few free videos/tv episodes to download from iTunes if you can be bothered to look for them.
-
I got the avplayer hd app and it plays all the popular movie formats (like MKV, avi, flv). Essential app.
To load MKV and avi files to avplayer hd simply drag and drop the files in itunes. so simple.

You don't need to plug it in to the computer I transfer mine by wifi, I convert mine to mp4 as it means I can AirPlay them to my apple tv when on holiday. I also have Netflix on mine which is good for tv series & older films plus I player,4od etc etc
With handbrake you can also convert your DVD's & have them on your iPad.

Thanks for the replies regarding how to watch films.
I'm liking the sound of this handbrake.

forget handbrake.. www.demonoid.com .. may have to wait for memberships to open, just download the film you want from there already in mp4 format
-
or purchase avplayer hd and download any movie in any format and watch it on the ipad.

I've got a Snugg cover on my ipad2 and it has been dropped down the stairs twice with no damage and the case allows charging, pic taking etc. looks a cracker too.

Technically its 3G, as you will never be able to use the 4G in this country.

That's true, and why I never bothered buying the 4/3G 1 as we will never have it

Not sure about never, it will happen once the phone companies stop bickering about it

The current iPad will never work on the 4G which we are getting (which is different to America)

Indeed from what I have just read you are correct, looks like they will need to come up with a multi frequency ipad4 if it is ever to be ok on 4g anywhere outside America & Canada

Apple are going to get spanked in Europe because of their false advertising in regards to the 4G on the ipad 3, on another note Vodafone and O2 are brewing up a plan (in the form of a new company) to make 2G, 3G and 4G more widely available across the UK by pooling their resources.

How does Handbrake software work. i.e. if I download load the software on my desktop pc how do I then get the film on to the ipad?

Handbrake is used for converting films, so you convert your films to mp4 then drop them into itunes & sync

... I also went for 2 year insurance on top of that for £65.
Are you sure you bought the right cover, that should have been £175 for that device ...

Yes was def £65 for insurance cover. Maybe they were doing a deal at the time.

£175 for insurance?
Feck me that's nearly half the price of the item anyway!
I see little point in paying for 3rd party insurance. The money would be better used going towards replacing the item when it comes to the end of its life.
Most stuff is covered under your household policy anyway or can be added for just a few quid :nerd:

Yep this is why i never buy insurance as all covered under the house insurance

Well, I would double check, its very unlikely it was a deal. I used to work for DSG and cover was never discounted/promo'ed. And if you have the wrong policy, should the worst happen, it will be worthless - regardless of whether it was a misrep/accident or not.

Its actually worth it, when the cost is reasonable (£175 isn't, but £65 certainly would be). The moment you start making claims on your household insurance is the moment your premiums go up, so that extra £65 you would have spent will be near doubled and reflected on your annual premium.
Not to mention the fact that insurance replacement is a palaver and usually leaves you with a substandard product based on current cash value, not like-for-like.
At PCW, we used to have a tonne of instant-replacement (now called "whatever happens") replacements happen at the counter in store - and it always meant getting an equal product, or better (whatever was in stock basically). Taxi drivers with TomToms used to walk in with a smashed entry level TomTom and walk out with a 310 worth twice the price, all for the sake of £20.
So if he has paid £65, and it is in-fact the adequate level of cover (please, OP, check!), then in 1 year when the "new Ipad" is dead and gone; and the OP "accidentally" drops it - it'll be replaced with the latest and greatest "new new Ipad", no questions asked. No calling insurance companies, recording claims, waiting for valuation, paying an excess, then paying a bigger premium at the end of the year.
The gadget cover on bank accounts is equally as good as far as I'm concerned, anything that doesn't record a historical insurance claim is a good thing.
