Title: SHELAGH's Question thread ( novice bordering on idiot)
Post by: shelaghmk3gti on 11 April 2012, 18:59
hope mods will approve!
i have interrupted so many threads to ask questions, dont think the boys will say i ruin anything as im genuinely interested .. but there are a few that dont like me.. given that i thought id do this and then only those that are interested in the genuine questions i have will reply  i have nothing to play on.. im a 40 yr old fem with a GTI that i love.. we've had our moments, but i seriously dont want to take her off the road .. for 2 reasons.. shes a bloody fine looking car and ive spent more that i would get back..
 my VW history involves
a mk1. ( was a horrible blue and was in 1995.. but god did i polish her)
a mark 2 16v that was written off by a one arm driver that went on to burn his house down
im now on my 3rd mk3.. all 8v.. for some reason

i have always had a very generous husband.. yeah i know!!  but now i dont so im hacking it.. i coud have any car i wanted and i still chose this heap

so dont get angry if i ask a stupid question....been rolling round in dirt all day dont spoil it now

shelagh x

I always answer any question im able to that hasn't been answered already and will continue to do so :)

just because a question has been asked 100 times doesn't mean the person asking it should know the answer, maybe they weren't there the last 100 times to hear it, some people on here don't understand that :)

on the way home from buying her ( 60miles) the head went though i didnt know that.. i drove it home she was a mess anyway..insight is wonderful

recently have ( after the head being done at a cost of £480) had a horrible vibe and rattle.. garage exp on the head didnt go well.. hence why i started this!
ok i clamped the exhaust at the manifold/heat gurad i think on friday 7th april.. my birthday! was in the center of the car what a job!!
today ive bolted the heat sheild at the back.. and as the front kept on vibrating i took it to a garage ( with £100 quid in my pocket) the noise is unberabe.. tho its not even audable to anyone that dont know a golf !!
al he did was take off my bolts.. to check then replace them and say he has to rip off the head sheild.. didnt add any more than id done.
i cant do that! just rip parts off!
i would however appreciate.. my learning curve being taken into consideration and not ( theres always be one)knocked

i want to make my car look like a certain members on here... i dunno his name.. but its smoothed bot with flash wheels and it was a prezzie for his mrs

i'll leave it there u males get bored easy

indeed!

have just had a tug at my wheel arches.. im sooo tempted, but wanted to see what they were like underneath
3 nuts( shiny as new ones) fell out along with a load of mud  look clean though
i also noticed a hole... is there only the one and could it be filled and painted with a rattle can/ touch up brush.. i assume all 4 will have these holes?
Title: Re: SHELAGH's Question thread ( novice boarding on idiot)
Post by: Dan_GTi8v on 12 April 2012, 12:32
there should be a few bolt holes on the lip where the arch screws on but shouldn't be any holes on the visible part of the arch. when I took my arches off the were rusted badly in places, grinded down filled and touched up with rattle cans and there as good as new :)

be careful with the front ones, my rear ones were ok but the fronts where the arch meets with the door down in the corner this section is often totally rotten on older mk3s or ones that haven't been looked after in the past. with the arches off I could push my finger right through  a tube of glass fiber later and they weren't looking too bad but new arches will be needed in the near future :(

quick Q.. is it only the front 2 little bits of trim i need off a CL if i remove mine??
and whats the filler called that i have to fill in the hole with ( sure i saw 1)
and where will i get a tin of paint to go over that? im near cardiff if anyone fancied doing a google search

Title: Re: SHELAGH's Question thread ( novice bordering on idiot)
Post by: VR6_Wherry on 13 April 2012, 11:14
You need the entire CL trim as it is smaller then the GTi one.

What holes are you on about? there should only be the one under the arches where the rivets pop into, they can be left.

The others will be where the CL trim pops into the sides..

Unless you have lots of rust!
Title: Re: SHELAGH's Question thread ( novice bordering on idiot)
Post by: boneybradley on 13 April 2012, 12:21
non plastic arched VR trim is the same width (although with vw they make the stuff from lots of differnet materials for each model, so i can't 100% say it will match)

check on ecp or similar (they used to list all/lots of the differnt options)
Title: Re: SHELAGH's Question thread ( novice bordering on idiot)
Post by: dTEA on 13 April 2012, 12:40
there will be holes in the arches where the rivets will have held the wheel arch covers though. They should be treated and filled or at the least treated otherwise i'd have thought they would be just waiting to add more rust.

And the boarding thing...surely that applies still mk3=boat?? non?

Anways good look with what looks to be the start of a project

the only one i can find is this one

major fed up now!

have spent the last 2 hrs running around trying to get the bolts for these stupid things( didnt realise i had to get them at the same time!... cant get them,, every scrappy i talked to said' it cant be done you have to drill this and that'.. so i get the laptop out of the car and showed them,,, then they tell me my bonnet wont lift high enough'.. i showed them exactly where the struts were to be bolted.. and it would open fine.. but no, what the hell do i know.. now on an effing mission to find a set f bolys or another set off another car

what a waste of a day !!!

on the upside.. i went into a random workshop that i saw a load of VW's outside of.. and was talking to the fella.. who i then realised was my brother!! havent seen him for 22 yrs...good taste obviously runs in the family though as he has a couple of mk4's and 2 transporters

you mean the boot struts as bonnet lifters? you need the bolts from the boot that the struts fit onto, you dont need to drill anything whoever you that was an idiot, you just need a spanner!

just been out and the roads wet and my car literally slipped around a corner  :undecided: ( felt like it came from back passenger side )

the tyre on the back passenger side is bald, meant to get it done when heat shield was removed but havent got time to get in as yet.. and cant change it myself as i havent got a locking nut

cant be beacuse of 1 tyre tho can it?
brakes need doing too, grinding and squeeky in reverse

ill go in in the morning to get the tyre.. but is it likely to be that? i put the kids in the car daily and now im a bit worried

Must be nice to be a saint......never done anything similar in your past at any point. I have and I kniw that in the past things were easier to get away with but we all learn somewhere so to me people in glass houses etc. The good point is that the problem was spotted and rectifyedbefore anything happened

My MK3 gauges have been pretty accurate.  :undecided:

Anyway, I just reset the trip everytime I fill up and it gives an avereage along with the gauge.

in all 3 ive had they have always let me down.. just wondering if theres something i could clean to make it more accurate?
was saying in another thread that sometimes a tenner could give me almost half a tank and then anther day the needle wont move off red ..a nd i tend not to put more than about a tenner in unless ive something planned as its not money i can afford to lose should it get nicked or towed  :undecided:
maybe filling it up to the brim just once would 'reset' it?

I've found in both my mk3s the gauge was cr@p at small volumes. Current one says empty when there are 10l left.

I always brim the tank and go by mileage to a tank.

So you dont check your tyres on a regular basis?
More fool you!
I regularly check my tyres and even then back in 1984 I had a blow out on a motorway!
So I have never been complacent about tyres!

ok dont argue.. jeez i get enough of that at home, yes Len i was ignorant and if anything had happened then it would have been on my head!
fact is tyre was probably very low when i bought the car so makes me even a bigger muppet.. lesson learnt!

Ok guy's lets not clog up someone else's thread with arguments...Tyre's been changed, lessons been learnt and no ones been hurt (this time)

Your not a Muppet, just sometimes in life other things are on your mind being a single parent and skint (just the impression you've given me) the last thing you worry about is your car...

I couldn't comment on the Fuel gauge as I haven't had any problems with mine, I've taken mine off the gauge and it was still going....but a tenner will not get you very far that's for sure...

Good luck

Actually Len I check mine regularly and the point of my post was not to comment on the state of your tyres but in fact your attitude towards someone who makes a simple mistake. I asked did you never do anything similar at some point in your past. I have made mistakes when buying cars and this is how I learnt. I am not arguing or having digs at anyone just simply saying that it's something most of us (if not all) have done at some point. Don't take it as a dig or personal

But hey if you lot dont take safety seriously carry on.
Just remember that your tyres are the only contact with the road and without good tyres you cannot turn or stop safely.

Yep your right...but brakes are also useful, correctly tightened wheel nuts too and every thing else that is bolted to the chasis for that matter!

Not intended as a personal pop but take it whatever way you want. You seem to think that a lot of stuff on here is aimed towarda yourself. My point was aimed in general. Anyway answer my question.....have you never done a similar thing in your past (nottyres in particular but a similar situation) ??

been there,!! on the M6 in an imported Mazda marvie..cant be as stupid as i look as i managed to get the car safely into blackpool using the handbrake and gears( with kids in the car wasn't easy or maybe the best idea but it happened) ive also had my engine blow in a vectra doing 80 in the outside lane on the M4 ( again kids in the car )..i coudnt have predicted either situation . i think its how people react to mishaps that causes problems while driving a lot of the time..panic wont help, how many people see a cat/dog/rabbit and swerve??  F** that! sorry bunny rabbit if you run in the road youre having it..always expect the unexpected when driving, even if the car has a full service history and mick the mechanic gave the car 5 stars the day before! complacency costs lives! - says she who runs bald tyres

Coming along, but came across some bad rust and done a quick fix but turns out the roof seal was broke and a hole under it coursing my car to rust from inside out, so not sure i wanna spend much more money on her, keep her till she gives up on me and ger a GTi. im now insured with sky insurance and WOW only £660 for the year thats on 2 years no claims, my old insurance Tesco with my mods wanted 3k GULP and 5K for a GTi but now im tempted to see how much a GTi would be with sky.

You would need to prove that you need to keep your licence for work/caring for a relative etc, it need to be a convincing reason.

thats a sh!tter but all ya can do is send it back an ask for the pic plus if he was parked on side of road is there signs pointing out camera etc plus ask to see the letter from council say he can park the van on there grass/pavmonts etc. all so check for where the speed signs r.

hope ya get it sorted.
Mobile camera vans can park anywhere and don't need to have warning signs visible.

im already technically banned, as the DVLA revoked my licence after points and a ticket were produced on my last car( and i refused to send it in as id sold the car at the time)... so im seriously not in a good place ( i would have been unliscensed at the time)
thiink its time to park the car up till i sort this... got so much going on, son in crown court etc(trial due to start in august) these silly things are getting overlooked and in the long run its all going to catch up with me .. cant be everything to everyone, if i lose the car for the above reasons ill never be able to get her back
anyways.. think ill leave the forum for a while as i dont need the 'due to me'i have that every morning
take care guys, ill possibly be back .. xxx
