Title: Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 or Canon EOS 1100D?(ITS HERE :)
Post by: LowlifeDubber on 09 April 2012, 17:39
Im after a quick bit of advice please.Im currently using a Finepix Bridge camera and im wanting to move into the DSLR range.
Ive been offered a choice of these 2 from a local camera shop for £250 & £260 both new and both with a lense.
The Panasonic comes with a 14-42mm lens and the Canon with a 18-55mm lens.

Im a beginner so dont really want to spend £1000 but i dont want to buy something i wont be able to keep for a couple of years and not be able to buy add ons.
The deal ive been offered is really good but i would like some advice on whether they are any good?

Will i be able to get decent lens' for them? Are they a standard type of fitment?
Im going in blind but the offer isnt there for too long so id love some quick advice if possible please.

Would the Panasonic be better as it is 16mp whereas the Canon is 12.1?

Really appreciate some input.

Thanks

I have an 1100D and I am more than happy

I found a new one on ebay for £320 with the 18-55mm lens, bag and 18GB SD card. The camera alone is £390 in the shops.

I have also bought new a 55-250mm zoom lens with image stabilization for £110 on ebay.
Its £270 in Currys!

I'll keep my eyes peeled on ebay for you!

Feeling the love for the canon then :)
My only concern is I'm not used to an optical viewfinder and the panny has a twistable one which is ideal for low car shots but I'm sure this is something I can overcome.
Should I not be worried about the fact it's only 12mp?
Or in the grand scheme of things does that not matter too much?

Thanks for the help lads :)

When you get up to cameras like that. A couple of megapixels difference isn't the issue. Its all about the quailty of the lense.

You have just gotta get used to using an eye peice.

dont worry about mp too much. the 1100d is a good camera and it will take a year or 2 for you to 'outgrow' it

Mega pixels mean very little once you go over 8 or 10. At that point it's more about the quality of the lenses. These 16megapixel compact cameras might seem impressive, but the sensor is tiny and the lens is small and cheap. But with a DSLR you've got a much better lens and better sensor even though it might "only" be 12mp.

You'll only see a problem with fewer megapixels when you print big images.
With a decent 6mp camera you can print out an A4 photo no problem, 8mp for A3, 10mp for A2 and so on. So, I would only be worried about lacking pixels if I was going to print out something say A1 or A0.
Besides, even on the highest resolution computer screen, you'll still only be able to show a 12mp photo at 20% of it's real size.

As for brand, I would go for the Canon, it's much more future proof, you won't be able to move up in the Panasonic range of lenses because they only have a small number. With Canon, there are hundreds of lenses available, some of them quite cheaply new or second hand. And chances are you will know someone who might be able to let you borrow one of their Canon lenses, but you probably won't know someone who owns a Panasonic with lenses to lend.
You can also hire lenses for Canon (and Nikon) DSLRs, so if you are going to a special event (wedding, etc) you could hire something way out of your price range for a weekend or week.

So the pink wasn't a style choice then?!

Obviously you've only got to wait till you get the new camera, but it's probably still worth checking if the old one is completely busted or if it's just got itself into a wierd mode of some sort.
Try switching it to full auto and see if that produces a normal photo, then try each of the other modes one by one.

It's gutting when you take photos and they aren't as good as what you hoped when you load them onto the computer.

Yeah i think it was me being ambitious and deciding i knew how to set my white balance instead of leaving it on Auto.
Proper gutted as i was taking better pictures before i went on this camera course for beginners. :embarassed:
But i guess its a learning curve.

Rest of the pics are here.I think im getting my position a bit better at least.

To me the pink seems to represent some sort of over exposure warning on the camera.  :undecided:

Thing is they looked fine on the viewfinder :(
I set the white balance to  fine with forced flash.
The ones indoors seem ok.
ah well I've got a new one being picked up in the morning so will see if I can an orange sky with that one lol.

Out of interest should I shoot in raw or jpeg with the new one?
I have all adobes latest software btw

always shoot raw, if it has it (all nikons do) then shoot raw + jpeg so you get both files.

you actually only need to shoot in RAW, the RAW contains a jpeg preview which can be extracted through software (this is also what the camera displays during playback.

looks like a problem when saving the image, the problem is nothing to do with white balance as the registration plates are pretty  much the right colour, I'd check the memory card and probably do a full reset on the camera.

i only shoot the raw+jpeg for workflow reasons as its faster on my comp to flick through jpegs than the larger raw files.

Well i got my camera late afternoon yesterday.

Wow,what a difference a half decent camera makes!
I finished a few jobs this morning and set off to take some pics near the River Trent.
Bare in mind id not really read the destructions yet so i was just having a fiddle, and set a few shots up using the tripod.
I tickled the levels a bit in Lightroom but apart from that im really pleased with them.

Wont be to your guys standards but im chuffed with them and well chuffed with my new camera!

Pics.

Now the quality looks much better on my pc,ive only uploaded them to facefluff in HQ mode but im guessing they have dumbed them down a bit.

Wheres the best place for me to store my pics online?Free storage that lets you upload 20mb pics would be nice. Cheers :)

Flickr is your friend.

Some good starter shots, I like the last one, but keep an eye on the horizons. Make sure each shot is straight. Best to do it in camera but can be done in Lightroom using the crop tool.

Now buy a 50mm f1.8.

Soooo,whats a 50mm f1.8 then lol
Im looking to get a couple of lens' but havnt done homework yet as to what type of lens i can use.

Thanks for the tips, any advice is welcomed.

Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. Which will teach you loads about photography. It's a fixed focal length (prime) that has no zoom and therefore is higher quality glass. You can zoom in/out with stepping forward or back.

It also has a aperture of f1.8 which allows faster shutter speeds in low light situations.

It only retails around £80 and is a fantastic investment!

Also a tripod isn't always necessary if you're shooting at a high shutter speed.

Remember you don't NEED anything. Learn the camera, and how to use it and go from there. When you hit a limitation then invest. Battery grip shouldn't really be top of your list until you find out you're running out of power to quickly. Even then you can look into having a spare battery.

Lens here: http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-ef-50mm-f1-8-ii-lens/p12814

Ebay tends to sell a lot of grey imports so personally I'd always buy from Jessops/WarehouseExpress and so on.

I wouldn't bother with using a tripod if it's a bright day. You only really need a tripod if you are going to use slow shutter speeds.

As for the next purchases,
1) a case or bag
2) spare battery
3) spare memory card
4) zoom lens 55-200 or similar
5) 50mm f1.8 lens (also known as a 50mm prime or "nifty-fifty")
6) polarising filter - used for a) improving the blue colour in the sky on bright days or b) reducing reflections

You could get these in any order really, but you need a case for sure. The 50mm lens will teach you a lot about composing your shots and depth of field, and it's much better quality glass. (Check out my thread  comparing the kit lens to the 50mm (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=226056.0), it's not for a Canon camera but the it gives you an idea of the quality difference)

I wouldn't bother with a battery grip until you're more experienced and confident otherwise you're just adding weight pointlessly.

I would spend plenty of time learning about composition and the rule of thirds (see here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=114170.0)), focus points, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and depth of field (see here (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=114168.0)).

Enjoy

This, in spades. The more photos you take, the more you'll understand what you want.  Do not just buy on spec.  Use the hell out of the camera and you'll get masses out of it.

there is a canon remote app you can get but you'll need to google about that.  The course you've linked to is really aimed at the canon wi-fi grips, these basically transmit images over wi-fi / wired network to a listening computer.  This is usually used for studio work / events, the tog shoots with the assistant / retoucher processes the images to go on a projector etc

A cheaper solution is the Eye-Fi cards

Ah  i see, cheers for that.To be honest its not something i would make use of,i was just trying to get DH a bit of info on the subject.
I took a load of pics the other night at Lincoln cathedral, some real nice ones too, also sat on the dual carriageway trying to take some decent light trail shots. Then after my 3 hours out i came home and subsequently deleted every god damn picture by formatting the card by accident.
I dont usually fluff up like this so i was rather pissed off to say the least!

Formatted or deleted from the card?
I rescued photos off a compact flash card a while ago using a handy utility from Sandisk called Rescue Pro (http://www.sandisk.com/products/software-and-services/data-recovery) and it doesn't have to be a Sandisk brand card either, I did it on a Kingston card that had failed.

So ive been trying to do these light trail jobbies this evening.
I scoped a spot out in the daytime and then set off about 45mins ago and there were a load of bloody lorrys in the layby!

So i know the actual positioning isnt fantastic but any tips on getting the clarity better would be great.
Also tried to get my missus to drive the car round in a circle but shes a crap driver so it was more an oval!

The settings i used were:
ISO 100-200
Shutter speed 6-12s
F3.4(it wouldnt let me change that in Tv setting.
White balance-Auto

I just used a tripod and set the timer to 2s as i dont have a remote yet.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Gary

My favourite:

They're really good, but you're white balance is off on the first two which IMO are the weakest of your shots. The latter ones are much much better.

What's your Flickr link?

Thanks mate, yeah the problem with the top 2 was behind me there was a grandstand with building work taking place and they had massive halogen lights all over so they threw things out a little.Shame as they would have looked quite nice with the cathedral in the background.

Not sure if im brave enough to step out of the auto wb setting yet ha ha

As for my link erm im not sure as im new to it.
 this could be it?

Added you as a contact on Flickr. You don't necessarily have to use manual white balance. Just a different setting!

You've inspired me to do some night time shots tonight.

Ive just been looking at your spec list with your camera.Ive been looking at getting a prime lens like yours, been looking at Sigma ones but not too sure on the quality.
Will be putting an order in for some filters and a couple of extra batteries and a couple more sdhc cards tomorrow.
Was looking all over for a funky camera strap but i cant seem to find one anywhere!

Black Rapid straps are reasonably good, I'd do without a funky one and get a comfortable one!

Get a 50mm f1.8 for £80 and it'll be the best purchase you've made yet. For batteries I picked up a Hama one (i believe) for my 1000d for £6! Mymemory.co.uk are good for cards, make sure you use a trusted site to get a genuine one, and I'd probably go with a Class 10 one if you can.

Sigma are good quality. Maybe not quite as good as Canon's higher end stuff, but they're very good.
As said the Canon 50mm f1.8 is a good starting point.
My brother went for the Sigma EX DG 50mm f2.8 Macro, which gives you a 50mm prime and a good macro in one, but it's more pricey than the standard Canon.

The 50mm f1.8 was the first decent lens I got after the kit lens. It teaches you so much about depth of field and framing/composing shots (because you can't zoom).
After that I got a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 to replace my kit lens, which is great.

Ive also seen this on Edition i was thinking of getting as it was a good price?
Sigma 70-300mm Lens. This item comes boxed with all its original packaging material. £60

Those straps a very pricey. I wouldn't buy such a chunky strap until I was using a much heavier camera and lens combo (my Sony a350 and Sigma 28-70 f2.8 lens are 1.3kg). Otherwise you just look silly with a smaller camera and kit lens dangling off the tripod mount. The only advantage I can see with them is that when the camera hangs, it hangs with the lens pointing down rather than out from your body, so you're less likely to knock the lens.

I would have rather spent £50 on a good bag or going towards a 50mm lens. But it's your choice.

Think my new tokina 11-16 weighs 1kg on its own! Thing with the rapid is that it sits in a ready to shoot position as well as being secure around your body. depends what kind of pics your taking i guess..

I went with the more expensive one as I was hoping it would do me for a good few years and I liked the way the camera hangs.
I've ordered a decent bag although I do have a smaller one.
Been looking at them Gorrila pod tripods. Are they any good or just an amateur novelty thing?

Gorrila pod tripods. Are they any good or just an amateur novelty thing?

in a nut shell they are flexible.

I use mine (gorilapod focus) for travel photography, it's lightweight and a hell of a lot smaller than my Manfrotto 055XPROB.  the main advantage is the gorilapod can be used in pretty much any location give the flexibility of the legs, I use a ball head (Manfrotto 496RC2) on mine which then allows you to point the camera at any angle.  The main limitation is the size, the gorilapod is only about a foot high meaning unless you put it on a wall / rock etc all your photos are going to be shot from a foot or lower, this is fine for some photos but say you want a group shot, your photo is going to be a knee height pointing up (not necessarily a flattering angle).

Before you buy a tripod read;

I have a 3 stage telescopic tripod which i have had for a while.Granted it is a cheap one but it seems to do the job.Although id like to get a better one,im not sure of the benefits of getting one would be but i will scan that link later and see if it gives me a bit of an insight.

Basically it's how much weight it can support.  A "cheap" tripod will often only support a few KG, making it quite unstable due to exsess stress on the tripod when in use.  The same applies to tripod heads.

Ah right, ive just read that article as i might as well get a new one while im at it.

Ive seen some second hand ones with a crank handle and geared rotation heads with quick release heads for about £40 give or take a tenner.
Id prefer only a 2 stage adjustable as the one i have has 3 and its a pain in the arse to unclip them all the time when im travelling from place to place in the car.

You might want to look into the pros and cons of the different heads.  geared heads are mainly aimed at macro given the precise movement they allow, most people use a hydrostatic ball head as it allows quick large movements and re-framing.  Like most things in the photographic world there is no "best" solution as each type has it's strengths and weaknesses.

You might also want to consider the special features of the tripod e.g reversible column, removable column, height and minimum height, for example mine can go as low as 10cm and as high as 178cm (with the column down (maximum stability)) it's 142cm which is pretty much eye level for me 6' 2".

As a starter I'd recommend going for a ball head.

I was looking at the ball heads but after reading that article it put me off them a tiny bit.I wont be doing any macro shots that i can envisage so i will go with the ball.

there's nothing wrong with ball heads, but make sure you get one that's rated to a high enough weight other wise it will slip / sag.

Manfrotto are probably the biggest brand when it comes to camera and lighting support.  I've never head of the 785B model, looking at the description, 1Kg maximum weight it's one aimed at compact cameras.

You probably don't want anything less than 4Kg as remember this is the body, and the lens combined
