WHOA!

HOLD THE PHONE!

Is this the company mobile, or...

No more hairdressing.

Company car allowance mobile so the hairdresser mobile is staying (possibly getting a big turbo thrown on it at some point) and clearly the Golf is also staying. Looking into renting a workshop to keep them all in at the moment!

So I'm guessing the 911 was not an option?

What have you ended up with?

Haven't bought anything yet! Currently shopping but thought I'd get the thread up as whatever it ends up being it won't be a dub.

911 is still on the cards for 2013 (See why I'm looking at workshops/units?)

I should point out that my max budget is £3K becuase frankly I would rather put the allowance towards messing with the cars I love not a daily dark pump mobile. It's sole purpose will be to look presentable when visiting customers, be cheap on fuel and pull the Golf on a trailer.

I am not buying an Audi, I refuse! Honestly all the dick heads in the office drive one.

"I'm a petrolhead, I love cars, you should see mine, it's awesome."

me: "Cool, what is it?"

"Audi A5"

Me: "Not bad, which engine?"

"V6 diesel with an auto box."

Me "Oh right so the diesel engine that's more thirsty than a petrol with the lame non DSG box? Er right, a real petrolheads car then."

do you have any limits on how old the car can be etc as they are paying the allowance?

would it not be easier to spank the allowance on a cheap lease car?

Leasing is way too expensive as I'll go over the mileage allowance by lots. I have no restriction on car age, just has to have 4 seats.

For those who think I'm mad/an idiot then I did do a huge amount of research before choosing to buy one of these. The BMW lump is well known to be reliable and is chain driven so no pesky cambelts to worry about. The 75/ZT still comes in the top 5 of customer ownership surveys despite it being out of production for years. They're cheap to run and insure. Because of the fear of MG products you end up getting a very good car for considerably less than you could the equivalent Audi/VW etc. Finally it can pull 1600KG so ideal for pulling the golf on a trailer.

Looks like it's been well looked after.  Nice find...

However I can't help but think it's not a trailer your need, I'd say a caravan would be more fitting. Have you also got the required driving gloves and pipe that are essential for driving these?

I think you're mistaking my MG with true sporting heritage for a Rover 75.

In fairness the subframes on these are solid mounted unlike the 75's and they also have 75% stiffer suspension with a small drop. They do drive very differently from the standard 75.

It's still an old man's car.

I still think it's a great looking and driving car.  My dad advises that you keep it well serviced etc.  His ZT got a bit manky as he didn't keep on top of servicing etc.

I can recommend one, bmw 5 series for fiesta money. Build quality is excellent and it's proper comfortable to waft along in.

55.4 mpg average for my journey to work this morning.

Ordered some new badges, pressed plates and thinking about a diesel tuning box for more ponies.

All you need then is yellow headlights and blue rear lights and you're all finished! ;)

They are but the tuning boxes are better for these. They have a switch you mount in the car that allows you to switch between 5 different maps on the fly.

Normally I would run a mile at the mention of tuning boxes but these ones are run by pretty much every member of the owners club with a diesel.

TU3 is the box on it's own, TU+Mafam is having it also hooked up to the MAF to correct the drift they suffer.

New plates and badges arrived today, both look awesome but when I stood back at the car after fitting realised the plates are NV03 not NU03. Dammit!!!!! Checked my order and it's their mistake. Emailed them asking for a new set to be sent asap for no charge.

So I thought after 2 days I better write up a proper appraisal of the new beast.

I'm well impressed with it. The quality of finish is not quite up with the VAG output of the same vintage with regards to plastic quality. The upper stuff and leather is all soft touch and really nice, all the cup holders and cubby holes feel good when shut but when you open them, although they are well damped you can feel the plastic behind it all is a bit flimsy. That said, it wears it's mileage and it's age much better than my Dad's old Boras, nothing looks worn out or gone shiny despite the 9 years and 111K. The only real wear shows on the seats where the alcantara has ruffled up somewhat. The doors, boot and bonnet all shut with a germanic thunk as well and there is not one single rattle or squeak from the interior. The seats are really comfortable, supportive and keep you planted when you chuck it about. The driving position is also excellent and the interior space is well thought out and HUGE!

Driving it is an eye opening experience as it is rather a large beast, biggest car I have ever owned including the old VW T25 van. Out on the road it's 135bhp is not a lot when it's hauling around 1500kgs of car but the torque is enough to make reasonable progress. By modern standards for a 2.0 diesel it's quite slow but it is very refined and surprisingly quite (Which reminds mine, road and engine noise in the cabin is almost non existent). Gear shift feels a little vague compared to the mx5 but that's hardly surprising. The steering is really sharp and there is surprisng amounts of feedback when pushing on, but feels stable and planted at speed on the motorway. This leads me nicely onto the suspension and handling. This is where I am most impressed. It rides undulations brilliantly and while it does feel 'sporty' and a little stiff it's not harsh or crashy. When throwing through a series of tight bends it feels nimble, well planted and like it wants you to push a bit harder, it's handling is really impressive for it's size and weight. Then when you're cruising along the motorway it'll happily waft along in the fast lane at speed quitely and sedately with the minimum of fuss.

When I decided to buy one of these it was because they are cheap and ticked all the boxes for what I need from a daily for work. I've been genuinely surprised at how good a car it is to drive and how well screwed together it is. It seems a shame that MGR's demise came at a time when it was building probably the best car it ever had. Having driven Passats and Golfs of a similar age, I have to say I would choose one of these over the equivalent VAG offering even if money was no object. It's that good!

The only downside is the constant ribbing about MGR going bust and the inevitable Head gasket comments. A small price to pay.

Cheers Nick, that'd be great  We won't be getting another car just yet, all the extra monies are going to her lessons at the mo, but once she's passed I'll be looking at getting a nice big family saloon or estate for her to drive around in and these are looking more attractive financially than the VAG range  :lipsrsealed:

It's only the K series lumps that suffered with head gaskets. L series/diesel engines were always ultra reliable.

I like the old MG/Rovers myself, but then I owned two before XD

Tomorrow it will be getting another pass with the rotary on the paint on some panels, a coat of sealant and a couple of coats of wax. Also the interior will get a spruce up.

I'll update this with day 2 pics later in the week.

Tbh I am feeling Nicks pain here.. It's all very well people taking the piss but having spent two days working on the car I can only say I've been very impressed by it..

The car ticks all the boxes it needs to.
It's in excellent condition for its age, in fact, super condition for its age.. This was before I even set to work on it.
It has a BMW 5 series common rail engine.

Those that can't appreciate this are only showing their ignorance.

It's not just a rebadge though, there are a load of differences and infact it was styled by Rover but a lot of the fit and finish and engineering design is BMW. It has a BMW engine and BMW Z axel rear suspension. Not to mention over the 75 it has a different spring and damper rates as well as all the subframes and steering rack being solid mounted with cast ali pieces replacing the rubber mounts. Driving a ZT vs 75 is night and day. One's a wafter the other a sports tourer.

But hey keep the bashing coming, I'd rather have 2K in my back pocket than drive something with VW or Audi badge just to keep up with the joneses. I already have my fun cars, this is just the work hack and why would I want to pay more for something I didn't even really want?

Wrong, it was designed by BMW who at the later stages switched it to fwd so as not to harm sales of the 5 series also as Nick said they did a lot more than rebadge it as a MG.

Nope.  It was designed by Richard Wolley.  The quotes are from him.

http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/index.php?thepage=richard_woolley

"In the early days of 75's design, Rover were looking at doing 3 different product offerings, only one of which made it to production i.e. the 75."

When BMW became the new owners of Rover, were there any discussions to have the 75 as a rear-wheel drive model and utilise the German platforms – or even develop an all-new chassis for this purpose instead?

"The 75 was always going to be a new front wheel drive platform. We never looked at a rear drive option. What we did look at, was using the old BMW 5 Series platform (which was of course rear drive) for the Flagship project, but this idea died with the car. "

The tunnel in the 75 is there for shell rigidity in the original design. When it came to the V8 this meant that little had to be done to change the shell to run the prop down the car. I think the rear suspension being the Z axle also helped hugely in housing the LSD and driveshafts.

Whatever the specifics, BMW had a huge hand in the design and implementation of the 75 and it has won handfuls of awards even years after it went out of production. MGR cars have a stigma attached to them that in not every case is exactly fair. I think had they managed to build the 25/45 replacement and it have been as good quality wise as the 75 then they would still be going strong today.

Not really, although it was designed by BMW and then fluffed about a bit to make it an MG.  At the end of the day anyone but an MG apologist (or Nick as I like to call him) is going to say 'it's a Rover 75' because it is.

A few different bushes, mountings and a bodykit do not a completely different car make.

It's a ponced up Rover 75.

Whoever designed it or owned the company at the time doesnt really matter.
The main minus factor with this car now is the fact that the company that built it no longer exists!

Its a Dodo car!

I think you'll find MG is still a going concerning and is designing and building cars in a small place called Birmingham in the midlands in a little known factory called Longbridge. I think you'll also find they are entering 2 works cars in the BTCC this year with multiple champion Jason Plato piloting one of them.

I should also point out that while the ZT is no longer sold here, it's still sold as the MG7 in china and the rover 75 as the Rowee 750. Parts are plentiful and can be got from many independents as well as main MG dealers including upgraded parts like LED rear light clusters etc.

Yeah it's not the pretiest of cars and the lack of diesel is killing their sales but one is due later in the year. I think when the MG5 and MG3 come on stream then we'll see more of them out and about. I hope so as SAIC have invested huge sums of money into MG and their global business is very much centered around the technical know how coming out of Longbridge. It'll be nice to see a another majot car manufacturer using the talents this country has in automotive design and technology, SAIC are after all the 8th largest car maker in the world.

Just a heads up for Guy. I've had 2 PM's on the MG forums and a very positive comment on Pistonheads about the ZT being the shiniest one at Pride of Longbridge (there were about 100 there as well!). Good work that man!

I had to switch from phone to laptop to comment on this car. Saw it at POL and still remember it now - stunning.

Hi there Nick. Your ZT must have been the shiniest there, plus I adore the colour. I hunted for a ZT Tourer in that colour, but couldn't find one in the right spec.

Guy (TONA Legend) recommended Chemical Guys 50/50 wax to me after he detailed the ZT and tonight was nice and sunny so I gave it a wash and then gave this stuff a go. I bought a couple of Megs Microfibre application pads and the wax went on really easily and smoothly. I left it for 30 mins then buffed it off with a clean dry microfibre. Buffed off easily and left it looking gleaming. The it rained so have some beading shots!

Not too bad, T1R's are about £95 each. I might go for something less grippy and more hard wearing though due to the mileage I do. Maybe some Linglongs?

The MG got lots of admiring glances last night, sadly from a man with an Astra with blue flashing lights. Luckily he couldn't believe that a Rover with a bodykit could exceed 45mph and therefore he must of daydreamed me making progress and decided not to ticket me. What a jolly lovely fellow.

I do indeed. It's ticking along nicely doing a sterling job as a daily and parts hauler although it could do with a clean inside and out.

To be honest the longer I have it, the more I enjoy it.

9 months, 16,000 miles and I'm making a call to Houston with some troubling news.

No, it's not the headgasket!!!!!!!!! Clutch is strarting to slip in 5th. I knew it would happen eventually as it's on nearly 130K and the original clutch. I'd rather it went now then when pulling the Golf or MX5 on a trailer and ruining a trackday. Looks like I'll have to get the spanners out in Jan and sort it.

Yours may need a DMF at those miles as well, what ever you do, don't replace it with a solid kit.

Had a chat with a couple of boys on the mg forums and in 300 + clutch changes they'd only seen 1 DMF needing replacement. I will check it but they reckon they're good for 200k unless utterly a utterly abused. I'll be changing the CSC as well.

Seen a few fail at low miles as well, check it and see how much play it has got but I did see one of the guys on the 75 club check his and it was withen spec then 2 days later it failed.

Good luck with it, I have pm'd you a good link on the easier way of replacing it.

I should have update dthis the other week.

Clutch all done and working. Not the most technical job in the world but a total PITA for things being fiddly, hard to reach, like tetris to disassemble etc etc. It also had a boost hose clip with a penchant for biting that left Chris with an arm like a self harming emo. Huge thansk to Chris for his help and Marcus for the use of the workshop for the day. The clutch is now pretty savage in it's engagement comapred to the old one but settlign in nicely with a good bite point and feel on the peddle. Here's to the next 130,000 miles. Total cost for parts, sundries, tea, workshop space etc was £220 so a godo saving over the cheapest quote of £800.

In other MG related news it's been a trooper in Snowmageddon and got me where I needed to be with no drama or fuss in warm and comfort.

Thats an excellent saving! It just goes to show how much you can save if you are prepared to get your hands dirty!

I need to remember that fact as Ive recently started just paying people to do jobs cos I cant be arsed haha.

Cars looking good in the snow anyway, mine and a ZT were the only cars I saw on the road on sunday night when we had a massive downfall here.

Well here we are with nearly 12 months and 20,000 miles in my "care" and it's just had the MOT which it passed........just.

To sum up the first 12 months? Cracking. It survived everything I've thrown at it, proved reliable, comfortable and generally a pleasure to own. In the 12 months I've had to replace the original batter, 2 bulbs and the clutch which along with a service totals £390 and it's averaged 49mpg over that period. Not bad.

The MOT threw up no surprises with me needing to replace the rear pads, sort out the handbrake and throw some new boots on it in the next month or so.

Here's hoping for another 12 months of low cost and comfy motoring.

Good question. I just don't love deisels and I figured while I'm lucky enough to have someone else pay for me to buy and run a car I might as well buy the last of the NA Type Rs and enjoy it.
