Anything is possible, not easy but possible.  There are two options that you could examin, in my opinion.  The first would be a front engined rear wheel drive Mk2.  The obvious problems with this are space (not sure if the v8 will fit between the bulkhead and the grill), layout (the Mk2 is designed for a transverse front wheel drive not a longditudinal rear wheel drive), and the rear suspension (beam not indipendant).  All of these could be solved, by using a spaceframe chassis for example, but not easilly or cheaply.  The second option would be to make a mid-engine rear wheel drive Mk2.  This has been done in the past, although not with a BMW engine to my knolledge, and so is achievable.  It would require a new subframe to be manufactured to take the engine and gearbox and then welded into the car.  Again this iis not easy, quick or cheap to do.

So inessence it is possible IF you have deep enough pockets, or sufficicent skills and access to the correct machines.  One thing is certain, it will not be quick or easy to do.

If you could put a BMW 3.5 V8 in your MK2   :lipsrsealed:  It probably wouldn't go around corners.

I've seen a Range Rover V8 shoehorned into a mini so anything is possible.   Driver had to sit in the back pretty much but it worked, well, it moved.  Things like this are usually show ponies over something functional.  Do want to be able to drive it or drag it?

Your looking at major work, spaceframe is going to be a good idea even if you could do the conversion your looking at major hassle with the DVLa to get it on the road.

Bit like that Bi-Turbo, Audi Powered, Mid-Engined MK1 that never seemed to get finished and went up for sale. ... I suspect it couldn't be made road legal.

Hadnt thought about the DVLA to be honest and come to think of it that would just annoy the *carp outta me.
and yeah it would probably become a track car then and that isnt what i wanted for it

Money isnt the problem i just hate hassle and you cant throw money at the dvla and fix things so it would just annoy me.

Thanks for all your comments its given me something to think about at least.

What is the biggest engine known to fit straight in?

All i really want is something that looks pretty bog standard on the outside but an effing monster underneath. I hate all the shiny shiny head turners (personally not my taste) i want a Surprise car

Iv seen a few r32 ones but think the most difficult engine iv seen put into a mk2 was a RS2 engine but i tell you what it was a monster when it was done

Buy a Westfield, stick it in that, fun to build, awesome to drive, and someone will actually want to buy it, once you want to sell it!

Would an old mk2 with 400bhp be driveable though ?, thats an awful lot of power through the front wheels.

i've driven a couple with that sort of power, and passengered in many more... mostly unusable, ridiculously expensive to own and maintain, but worth it when you see the look on the M5/Porsche/Ferrari owners faces
