Thread duplicated from a local forum i am on, picked it up last Saturday:
Well as some of you know I have purchased Phil’s Mk2 off of him. I’ve always wanted one since I was about 8 and my grandad had an oak green mk2 gti. I’ve nearly taken the plunge a few times but this time the car was too good to pass up.
A little bit of information (some of it shamelessly copied and edited from Phil’s thread)
It’s a 1992 run out model GTI 8v.
I'm the 4th owner now after Phil has only had it a few weeks before falling for his 24k mile Scirocco and letting the mk2 go to fund this project! Previous owner to this had it for a year where he bought it locally from an elderly lady. When he went to view the car the only bits of rust he could find were on the bottom of the struts, drop links, calipers and other running gear bits so he decided to change and upgrade these bits and its now on stiffened Koni shocks and springs.
Original bill of sale shows the original owner part ex'd her Scirocco Scala against the golf (what a coincidence that Phil has done the opposite!) She kept on top of the services and MOT's until around 2006 when she stopped using it so much but still had the car picked up by VW for mot's. Service history is pretty impressive, including a £1600 bill from VW for removal of all trim to check for rust and repair any found, some was found around the plinth on the boot so the boot lid was replaced for a new one!
Car is just shy of 51k miles now (put about 150 on it this weekend!)
Phil had done an awesome job of detailing the car prior to me picking it up last Saturday, few pics below:

Future plans will be to keep ontop of the cleaning, get some coilovers and sort out a wheel change, ill be keeping the ra’s too of course.
Immediate plans have been to fit a mk3 weighted shiftrod, polished door handle inserts, hella stickered spots (originals have gone milky as seen above) and a big chavy ram air filter
-
Upon going to Phils and collecting the car, within 5 minutes we had started the first few mods (cheers Phil and Cooper) the Hella spots are in, the weighted shiftrod is on and the ram-air filter is being its chavy self!

The only immediate problem for me was that the passenger side parcel shelf support was cracked so I’ve sorted a pair of new ones (seller wouldn’t sell separately, so I have a nice spare one) they were mint condition except very dusty! Spent awhile cleaning the one I need, comparison shots of the two:

Boot light switch surround got a touch up with some matt black:

Picture of it at yesterdays vagcars meet (cheers Kurt):

And thanks to Matty I’ve got this for it:
And thanks to Phil for fitting! Ended up using the black momo horn push below as wasnt keen on the one that came with the wheel (can see the polished door handle inserts too):
Phil was also a hero and gave me some carpet turret covers as they fitted the later cars with these horrible cardboard/foam ones, so i have a few little bits to do to smarten it up.
-
Rear parcel shelf support is now fitted along with the carpeted turret covers. The boot area looks perfect now!
I have also ordered some mk3 top mounts for the front, new rear top mounts and a KW V1 Inox-line coilover kit. Hopefully that will be on soon.
Just got to secure some wheels now
-
Lovely mk2 scott. Is it lowered already in the pics? What wheels are you getting? Keep seeing these mk2 threads makes me really regret selling mine
-
Cheers mate, I've always wanted one so I'll hopefully be hanging onto this one and not letting it go easy!
It's got koni suspension at the mo that's pretty new but don't think it's lowered really. The front looks pretty low compared to other standard ones I have seen though! Kw coilovers should be here very soon though, can't wait!
Hopefully I'll be getting hold of some immaculate bbs rm's with 1.0 rs outers so the same as the optional g60's but half an inch wider. Hopefully them and the coilovers will set it off!
-
Looks awsome! Such an awsome original example, please dont go swapping everything out and chavving it up!.
-
Very nice mk2  needs to be kept original
-
i love it man!
-
i agree with those guys... a car in this condition should be kept original
-
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm afraid to say it wont be getting kept completely original (wheres the fun in that haha) but any changes will be period/ oem touches and completely reversable i.e suspension/ bbs rm's/ steering wheel etc
-
Here's a couple of my current daily too:

it's been garaged for the winter but is now back out and currently doing 90 miles a day on week days. For this reason its currently up for sale but it looks like works office is moving closer to a train station so hopefully i can keep it and can commute by train in a few months!
-

Phew... make sure you do!... Keep everything!
-
Dont worry, its in good hands
Done plenty of little jobs to it in the passed week and all my suspension parts have turned up so that could be this weekends job
Just some wheels to find now..............

I'm certain this thread will upset a few purists considering how mint and original it's been all it's life. :lipsrsealed:
-
I'm sure it will, it's not their car though
It's already got koni shocks and springs on it but i want to get it sitting nice on some decent suspension and on rm's/rs's, its hardly sacrilegious

Yes but I bet it won't stop there.
-
Im afraid it will have to end there so i dont 'ruin' it. Im half hoping the stem seals go so i can get my boss to port and big valve the head with 3 angle seats and a nice cam in it

Stainless overload tonight! Wind deflector arms turned up so set about fitting them. Ended up taking the deflector off and cleaning all the rain gutter out etc no before pics but a few afters:

Rusty standard arms:
Only a small cheap change but I'm so much happier about this area now. Sunroof is allot smoother and silent now when it closes too, winner all round!
These also turned up:

Cheers for sorting me out Matty, appreciate that! Hopefully get these on at the weekend. Just need a nice set of rm's/rs's to get it up to where I want it to be now. Doesn't seem to be many sets about though :(

Top mounts fitting whilst on coffee break today:
All good to go for fitting them tomorrow, can't wait!

Well, massive thanks to Chris and Phil (coops and big Wilko for being them haha), chris is a suspension fitting machine
Few pics, showing the koni shocks and eibach springs (currently for sale, only covered a couple of thousand miles), the kw's installed and couple of pics with it all fitted:

All fitted and a few miles put on it, settled well so far, drives awesome too.

Couple of pictures one of the lads took for me whilst at getpolished.co.uk's unit:

Just won some wheels on eBay too........

Cupra went last night, went to my mate down in Hull in p/x for this:
Picking up some BBS RS001's in standard spec tomorrow night too for the mk2, its been a good month!
-
Well, 6 hour round trip in the 32 last night and they are all well and picked up. Sold someone the suspension that came of the mk2 as well so was all good!
Few pics:
Probably look better condition in the pics than they are. Hopefully do a test fit this weekend and see what they are like for fitment and rideheight etc if I get the time. Then I'll be getting the tyres removed and set about refurbishing them!
Also the r32 got there and back (300 miles) and still has 90 miles left to empty, not too shabby!
-
Nice wheels..... That 32 looks pretty tasty too.... lucky man.
-
Cheers! Treating myself whilst I can haha
-
love this, cant wait to see it with the new rims on.
nice 32 as well! everyone should have one with mpg like that!
-
haha exactly matey!
Havn't updated for awhile but tyres are now off the rs's and I spent the afternoon at work splitting them. Took me half an hour or so to get them all apart and then about 1.5 hours getting all the bastard bathroom sealant off. Bodged effort of building them from somewhere in the past. All the bolts were miles too tight as well
One of the barrels has previously had a small crack in too and not had a very good repair to be honest. My boss is going to grind the current weld out and do it properly for me. Cons of a set of wheels that are allot older than myself haha i did try them on the night previous at current ride height just to temp myself on (shocking pictures i know):
Following the fitting of them, i think i'll be going for 195-50-15's. Didnt like the ride on the 45's and dont want to lower it more to suit 45's and make it impractical. Also picked up two better condition 1" lips:
They are all with my mate Matty now, cheers buddy can't wait to see them all polished up! Just gotta save and get quotes for getting the barrels and centres powdercoated now.....
Had the mk2 out Sunday for it's last outing for a couple of months. Was shifting all the cars about on the drive so I could get it out and lined up the golfs in order by accident haha couldn't resist a picture
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm118/scott-sri/Mk2%20Golf%20GTI/c44d2f12.jpg)
All cleaned and put away now. Did a few jobs on the 32 too. Painted the intake pipe Matt black, cleaned the bay plastics up and cleaned and re-oiled the filter. TB also cleaned and re-aligned and a new maf fitted:
And the big lad about the get washed:
Intake pipe went from this blue colour (nice colour but bit chavvy):

to matt black:
Full engine bay, looks abit better now:
All clean, comes up mint, really happy with the car:
Mk2 all tucked away for now:
Cheers for looking
-
My friend matty is done with the lips and also had a quick whip round the center nuts too. I'm glad he's got the tools and patience because I know I don't!
Hopefully get them picked up this weekend and looking forward to it! Just barrels and centers to get done now and of course new tyres. Won't be done for a couple of months tbh but I'm in no rush, it's all tucked away out of harms way.
-
Jealous much! Two great cars! :afro:
-
Great work on a lovely condition MK2! Makes me want one!
-
Cheers lads, good to know people can appreciate what im doing to it. As someone has mentioned before some die hard gti lovers don't agree with me molesting it with goodies haha
-
Sweet mk2 mate white is one of the best colours on the mk2 I reckon and it's only bolt on stuff, it's not like ur hacking at the bodywork is it? Keep up the good work
-
Cheers Seth, thats it exactly!
Progress is slow at the minute, it was my girlfriends birthday this month, its insurance next month and i'm doing allot of miles in the 32 at the moment so thats not cheap
I'm hoping to find some money next month to have the wheels powdercoated so i can get them built back up!
-
hey scott never new you were on here
cars looking sweet mate love the rims
-
Now then Rob, same here, hadnt recognised anyone yet! Stumbled upon this forum when doing some google research, its class for information.
Cheers, im abit out of love with the wheels at the moment, need to get motivated again and get them sorted. It's all money though isnt it haha
-
Smallest update ever but I went back to standard airbox and panel filter. Spent far more time than I should have done cleaning the airbox up mind  just wanted a more oem look and also spent more time cleaning the bay up.

Stainless shortened valves showed up for the rs's so thought it'd be rude not to piece a wheel together:

The centre nuts and dishes have had a few layers of sealant on them after Matty was a polishing legend. Need to pull my finger out (and find a money tree) to get new badges and nuts and get centres and barrels done.
As always other things have popped up, insurance this month and 32 servicing the next. Still need to get the arches done on the 32 as well (some day soon deejay haha)
-
2 gorgeous cars there, esp the mk2, keep it up
-
Thankyou buddy. I'm trying to pull the powdercoating forward and get them built up
-
Another small part I've been meaning to get for ages is the drivers kick plate. The one on the car looks abit discoloured and had a crack in it. Found a mint one on eBay with a buy it now, so snapped it up. A tatty one with no clips went higher on price in auction the other day :/ I picked it up from my weekend work today:
It looks like new, not a mark on it or the clips so I'm happy with that. Just need to find two seat belt guide covers now as they appear to be missing off the front seat belts, then I'm happy with the interior. Can see in this picture the original kick plate:
It's not insured again but won't be taxing it until July probably as I want to get these wheels done and new tyres for them. I may give it before then though as I love driving it
On the look out for some new centercaps, same as the above, if anyone spots any :)
-
Thanks lads. Couple of small, some may say boring, updates haha
Just ordered some new centre caps, the same as what I did have but new :D bit of a ball ache finding some but ended up having to order from Germany. Nearly all the Rs/rm caps are discontinued now except the carbon and black ones. Also ordered 120 12 point m7 nuts from Germany too for when the wheels get built back up, miles cheaper over there!
Also got two covers for the seatbelt guides on the front as they were missing:
Fitted the new kickplate too, old one:
New one fitted:

Had my new mats in the boot so fitted them too:
Much better! Got a couple of snaps of things I've not been able to before because of darkness etc so overall shot now with a good shot of the wheel:
Carpet turret covers I swapped over awhile back:

Mate, your mk2 is stunning. I sold my exact mk2 to a local guy who still has the car now and this was around 15 years ago. I'm meeting up with him on Sunday to get some pictures of our two cars together, so if your interested keep an eye on the mk6 section. It isn't anywhere near as clean as yours but heis thinking of respraying it. It still has the std BBS on it, kamei eyebrow spoiler and a stainless exhaust on it. I bought it from Awesome GTi when they were still at Alsager, so a long time ago.
Keep up the good work, it looks beautiful.
-
I'll have a check buddy, itl be nice to see how they look side by side. I saw a shot awhile ago of a mk2 next to a from behind and it was about twice the size :0 I don't think my r32 would fit in the garage properly even.
Thanks for the kind words, can tell how much you must have liked yours when you had it!

Had it out last Sunday and drove it round the block (no tax yet) still puts a grin on my face even at 30mph haha

My dad also offered to spray one of my centres up at his work to see what I thought. Had an itch to go for White as ive seen it before and loved it. Spent awhile prepping a center and masking it all off and my dad came in tonight with the finished product.

I like it better than the silver so think I'll go for it and get prepping the rest. Just need to find a localish powdercoaters to do the barrels for me now!

I like white Alloys....
Not cos I've got a set...
My Lads got white RA's on his White Driver and I do Like 'Em TBH.... Didn't think I would...
Every Day Is A School Day - EH!!
-
You need gold nuts, red BBS caps with Gold lettering for the proper BLING look!!
-
Cheers, I never normally like white alloys but i saw tims old mk2 on white rm's when i was buying mine and loved it. I think with them being split rims there's only a little bit of white and not the full wheel so it gets away with it, plus matches the car. (white on the wheels is brighter though!)
Got chrome bolts and new 12 point m7 nuts enroute from germany and also got a set of the discontinued chrome/white/grey bbs center caps. Not keen on gold detailing although i did fancy the red center caps at one point!
-
I think the red centres would match well with the red GTI on the side trim...
But you would need gold bolts to make it work...
I bought a set of brand new RM centres earlier this year £120.00 the set me then the seller bumped the price up to £180.00 as he found out they were disc.
-
I'm not keen on the gold bolt thing myself but they do look good on some cars, it's just not me sort of thing.
Not even sure I'm going to like the White centers but we shall see haha
-
Ended up deciding against White
Got the bits back from SEM today, a week earlier than I thought! Impressed with the results as a whole, just can't wait to get them on! Few random pics:

Cheers lads, spent most of yesterday afternoon building them all up properly then gave the seam another layer of sealant this morning. Few pictures:
All tucked up in the garage now with the mk2, the sealant was stinking the house out haha really happy I bought new nuts, finishes them off nicely. Also ordered some 8mm spacers for the rear from eibach. Just need to see if I'll need different types of bolts compared to what is on as standard (not sure if ra's/rs's are the same type)
Light is at the end of the tunnel!
-
Another boring one but i started on another area that bugged me tonight! The rear numberplate/ boot plinth bolts and number plate light bolts. The rear number plate had been put on too high and the bolts all had really corroded heads.
The bolts were abit of a pain to remove bit got there in the end. The plinth had years worth of grime behind and in it and also the rust off the bolt/screw heads had stained it. I set about cleaning all that off so it ended up looking clean again:
Next the number plate. God knows what sticky back foam had been used but it was a real pain to get off and then to get off the car boot itself! Got there in the end though:
Now I've ordered some NOS rear numberplate lights, some stainless screws to attach them and some stainless bolts to attach the boot plinth again, then I'll fit the plate back on in a better position.
Cheers for reading
-
awesome man!
-
Love this car man and your doing everything the right way :)
-
awesome man!
Cheers mate, thanks for the help so far!
Love this car man and your doing everything the right way :)
Cheers, im hoping thats the way its coming across haha

Couple of bits showed up today, new rear plate lights, eibach 8mm spacers at the correct centre bore and my tyres:
Spacer doesn't protrude passed the wheel centre which is great or I was going to have them turned down:
Just need the stainless bolts to show up for the numberplate lights and the boot plinth and I can get that back on. Then just the longer bolts for the rear wheels! Tyres are getting fitted Saturday so I'm hoping to get the arches cleaned, the wheels sealed and fitted and maybe lower a tad more to suit if I have time!
-
Got the stainless bolts through today, so got the plinth back on and finally put the plate on slightly lower down. It's always been too high and always annoyed me! The screws for the numberplate lights were abit smaller than the original ones and don't feel quite as secure but seem okay.
Plate before:

Plate now:
Might seem a tad anal but it's made the back end look miles better! Just wish I had before shots of the first photo to show the difference!
Hopefully have some more exciting updates Saturday/Sunday!
-
Like I said Scott > Clean! Totes with you on the clean back end
-
Cheers buddy, did some more cleaning tonight haha really can't wait for the rs's now!
Picked up my longer bolts for the rear wheels today and looks like I'd ordered tapered instead of radius :( wounded! Need to get some by Saturday for the rs's. Hopefully I'll find something locally!
Had all the wheels off tonight and scrubbed at the under arches with a stiff brush and all purpose cleaner. They wernt that dirty anyway which was nice, naff all rust either except surface on the hubs etc
Also painted the calipers in smooth silver. Was tempted to leave the rears bare as they looked brand new! All disks are also as new!
No pics of painted calipers but looks much better. Ended up just getting in the zone haha lowered the front 3 threads and rear 2 also. All good for rs's Saturday bar the longer bolts to space the rears :( few random pics:

Just caught this, awesome work. Noticed the weird number plate position, then you fixed that.... damn :nerd:

Thanks Wayne, so am i! I'm hoping today will be the day! Picked up some more bolts yesterday for the rear but they need cutting down a tad, will get that sorted at work today!
Just caught this, awesome work. Noticed the weird number plate position, then you fixed that.... damn :nerd:
Thanks JV! It's always bugged me but it seems it was more or less cemented on by VW when it got a new boot, all sorted now though, just took awhile to get all the stuff off haha
-
Worked this morning and chopped down the longer wheel bolts I managed to get hold of whilst I was there. As soon as I finished and got home I packed the car up and went and got the tyres fitted:
It was raining when I got home so I waited for it to stop and cracked on fitting the rs's complete with 8mm eibach spacers at the rear, comparison shot to the picture I took the other night, minus centre caps:

-
Need some close ups...
But looking good...
-
Cheers! Just a couple of quick iPhone ones as it looked like it was going to chuck it down any second :( there's a big vag meet on this Wednesday so hopefully weather will be nice and I'll ask the guy who does all our photos to get a few good ones :)
-
Stunning mate, watching this with great interest!

Looks stunning

cheers guys, taxed it and had it out for a quick run yesterday, forgot how much fun it is!

First proper run out last night in the mk2, since February. Went 30 miles up the road for the vagcars.co.uk meeting. Massive turnout as usual plus quite a few more! Two mates took some pictures:

Looking Really Nice!!
is that a glass sunroof I spot??

Thanks, such a good feeling driving it there. Was a great night for it!
I had the sunroof open in the pictures as I wanted the rain gutters and deflector on show for when people came for a look, as sad as that sounds haha

Cheers mate! Fairly sensible height, maybe touch lower than when you were running the rm's? Can just about get on and off the drive. I'll see how long I can last before I go a couple more turns haha
Regards the bbm one and it's cooler, in person it all strangely works haha love that car. It's all go not a massive amount of show and is used properly. It's coming off the road at some point for a full rebuild, which I'm hoping I can influence a bit! He wants the cooler hidden himself but just got abit excited when it turned up he said!
I'll be showing him 'mr blues' progress thread, I'm sure i won't need to influence him much after that

looking good scott love this car very clean i think im going to convert mine back to a gti so i can actually use the car again
i dont like looking at these threads knowing mine is broke lol
-
Great thread and lovely cars  love what your doing with the mk2 and yes the purists would say that it should be kept standard being as the mileage is so low but flip it it's your car and if I had the money I would do the same

Cheers Rob, yes you need to get yours sorted and back out again! Last meet was a goodun, mk1's and 2's seem to be on the up locally

Cheers mate, this is literally the extent to which ill be taking it, maybe a vwms wheel and gearknob if i can ever find them but thats it about done now! Hoping to have it serviced and checked over by my local vag specialist soon as well. I personally dont think a set of rm's/rs's can spoil a mk2 unless they are daft wide with really stretched tyres!

Had a meet with the local VAG club, just one quick pic i've got off a mate and a couple of group shots i'd sneaked into:

Think he's editing some more of the mk2 for me but that's just a teaser. I'll put any more up as and when. Thanks for looking!

Cheers matey, currently wondering where to go next with it! Just got a nice tailored car cover for it, so i can keep the dust off it in the garage. Also refurbishing the plastic panel under the bonnet vents, it was badly sunbleached!

Oh and the obligatory dealer plates

It was still a bit wet on the 2nd picture. Re-fitted, was quite hard getting the trim back in without marking it but it went okay. Took it out for a blast too, so good getting back in a mk2!

Got these on quickly last night:

Picked up my new genuine arch yesterday to replace this:
Only just ordered some genuine black vw rivets for it yesterday so im hoping i might get chance to have a go at it this weekend! Also need to get the front bumper off for deejay to repair where the first owner scraped it :( hoping this weekend or next!
Also my tailored mk2 car cover showed up so i can keep the car dust free and out of the sun in the garage. I'll wait until it's had a proper clean until i have a go at fitting it though as it's still dusty and dirty from last sunday when i drove it to work.
Lastly, these showed up:
Red/gold center caps. Bit of an impulse buy, an expensive one at that but i wanted to try tie in the red grill and red gti side strip badges with them. I'll see how it looks though next time the car is out!
Lastly the car is going into VASSTECH this saturday for an oil/inspection service. Hopefully nothing will be flagged up!
-
These center caps should look good on your motor.
Been toying with the idea of some blue ones for mine.
Wgat are you doing with the black ones and what size are they?
-
Wondered when the red centers would appear!!
I sowed that seed in your mind...

Thankyou buddy, the seller i got them red ones off is doing blue ones too. Expensive though :( they are the chrome/white/grey ones on at the moment:

I'm afraid ill be keeping them, they dont make them anymore either so took me awhile to track down and cost quite a lot of money (still £35 short of what them red ones cost me though )

Thanks mate, really happy with it now, think it's time to leave it as it is for time being. Will continue the hunt for a NOS front bumper though!

Two weekends back a friend off the local forum who is parts manager for all the local lookers asked if id lend the mk2 to VW Lookers for one of their weekend promotions. I was more than happy to oblige! Few pics:

Looks real good in the showroom!
-
Hello,
The car looks good! You are running KW V1's I understand, can the current setup go any higher? If so, roughly how much more? The speed bumps where I am staying are like hills, I will try for your look about equal front and rear ride height but need to know if I can raise the car a little if needed.
Thanks
-
Stunning looking car and love the showroom pictures.
-
Great work on this and lovely pics as well. Makes me really, really want a mk2!
-
Absolutely stunning mate perfect in every way
-
Not been on in awhile so thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it!
Regards the kw v1's, they are about halfway down approximately so could be wound about 40mm higher or so. It's at a sensible height there, it doesn't catch often at all but then I don't get to drive it very often :(
-
Might have to put this up for sale soon due to loosing the space in the garage :(
-
Well got the garage all sorted at the new house and it fits in fine
Not really done much with it recently, just cleaning some bits and bobs up some more etc Had it out sunday night and gave it a bit of a spruce up.

I also took the Vw Motorsport steering wheel off it and put the original back on so that might be up for sale soon, I'm undecided. I'm also starting to hanker after some nice wheels again!

I got some new wheels for this over the summer:
