Had my car remapped on friday and there was no codes before getting it mapped, when they were taking the car off the rolling road it wouldn't start, so scanned it and told me it was just an immobilizer code and started once it was cleared. But i've been having problems starting the car when it's warmed up, starts fine when cold just not when up to temp scanned the car yesterday and got the following codes
17947 (P1539) clutch pedal switch
16706 (P0322) engine rpm sensor intermittent
01314 engine control module (could this be due to the car being remapped?)
Also the maf is unplugged because they said it was that bad it wasn't worth plugging back in
Any help appreciated
-
Who the hell mapped that????
-
dammit Toby you beat me
-
R-tech
-
Really ? :undecided:
-
crank sensor is normally the culprit for not starting when warm
clutch switch - have you noticed the revs staying put when you change gears?
-
still surprised r-tech unplugged the maf and didnt tell you to replace it straight away tho.
and yeah crank sensor sounds the culprit
-
No they told me to replace it with a main dealer only one, they said it's not worth plugging in to get home with
Not noticed the revs staying while changing gear either as regards to the clutch pedal switch
-
clear the codes and see what comes back
-
do you live far from r-tech? .. you can trade in your old maf and pay £70 and get a new one from vw.. i did that about 2 years ago when mine went
-
clear the codes and see what comes back
Tried it yesterday they all came back, i'll try again when i've got a new maf fitted and crank shaft sensor
I'm more than happy with the remap though made 232.8 bhp with standard smic and standard cat back exhaust!

ARZ with k03s, ebay 3" downpipe and decat, creation motorsports silicone tip, pipercross panel filter and forge 007p
232.8 bhp and 217lb/ft they said they kept the torque quite low on purpose think because of the smic and told me really i need to get a fmic
-
i was told by a vw technician that the clutch pedal switch is only to disable the cruise control ?
-

I don't have cruise control
-

sure he wasnt a nissan technician :lipsrsealed:
-
LNo the switch tells the ECU to cut the revs when changing gear. My cousins Galaxy had a clutch switch which was knackered and it just sounded like he couldn't drive as the revs just stayed up there lol
-
when your car is warmed up, plug the maf back in, it will start up then. btw anyone no the average lifespan for a maf? people seem to get through 1 a week on here!?

Already tried that when i was having trouble getting it started the other night sat in a petrol station, once it's started it runs and idles fine.
would driving with the maf unplugged and a dodgy crankshaft sensor cause any damage to the engine?
-
no, the default lookup tables in the ecu will keep air/fuel ratio safe enough with the maf unplugged (assuming that is the only faulty part on the fuel side of things). 99.9% certain the crank sensor is causing your warm start issues. That shouldn't cause any damage since as soon as the ecu see's an implausible signal from the sensor it cuts the ignition. When they begin to fail they tend to start showing symptoms once the oil temp is above around 70 degrees.

Thanks for the reply mate, i'll get a new maf and crank sensor ordered up tomorrow and hopefully cure the problem

I don't see why they limited your torque, a normal stage one map makes around 230ft/lb on the standard smic and cat back..

+1
-
i'm not sure to be honest must of been a reason though, it's stage 1.5 map when i got there they said i'd probably make 210-215 bhp but said it was flowing really well so made 332 bhp
-
How have the managed to map a car with a faulty MAF surely air/fuel ratio would be completely wrong and it can't be something you can guess
-
I've not read any of the other posts but if it's bringing up the rpm sensor that can cause starting problems. if its when the cars warm the sensor could be breaking down when it's hot not giving the correct signal hence no starting

I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to that either, also have boost surge in 3rd gear since the map
-
Take it back I'm no expert but clearly something not right was the car scanned before the map

This is the thing that is bugging me the most I got absolutely no info from anyone as to what was going on, they took the car in put it on the rollers and that was it no communication until it was finished being mapped. Which was to get a new maf run it on good fuel and I need a fmic
-
I had that too. Didn't speak to anyone after an initial hello until the guy said take it for a test drive.
-
Exactly the same when I had my stage 2 and THS fmic fitted wasn't very impressed but put it down to them
-
Sounds like the customer service has gone down hill :lipsrsealed:
-
It wasn't the hype I was expecting that's all I'm going to say. However it was a cold Saturday morning
Would have been nice to at least say hello to the guy who mapped it though.
Maybe its the volume of work nowadays meaning they haven't got the time.
-
fitting new maf and crank sensor tomorrow so will see what it's like when there done
Clutch pedal switch have no idea about that but the revs drop as they should when the clutch is pressed
boost surge, could running with the maf unplugged be causing this?

Hi!
There where codes under laying and fuel trims of the scale before we worked on the car, which after a bit of time logging we found would not hinder the mapping we was going to carry out as the generic tables would work fine. The crank sensor fault would on come back after a power run and the rpm went over 6500rpm.
When the car was stock and we cleared the MULT fuel trims from -25% then car took a few turns on the key and around 8 seconds to start when trying to get the car on the dyno, after the first stock power runs it was highlighted that the MAF reading where a mile out and eat way at the stock power, so the tuning session was carried out with MAF off and generic mod. The reason the car would not start was beause the plugs would have got sooted up with the maf over reading and dumping the fuel during the last power run we ran the car with the MAF on to see how far the fuel way out and how it would effect the power, we read the codes from the ecu and only stored code was IMMO which I shouted to Jim , which was down to the ecu booting up for the map to be loaded which happend every time any ecu gets mapped.
Once you got the crank sensor fitted and fixed the other issues then the car should be spot on starting, there is nothing in the map which changes the start conditions or immo status only power when the turbo is on boost.
The only thing a map can do is highlight under laying issues hardware issues, and clearing fault codes and restoring fuel trims ADD/MULT back to zero will also highlight fuel issues, starting issues, faulty maf ect..
If you have more under laying issues which have not come to light then these can lead on to warm/cold start issues, ECT, AIT Thermostat ect.. Once you got all the bits fitted and fixed your welcome to pop down to have it all check out again and logged on the dyno to make sure there are no more silly underlaying issues and we could have more time to chat over some hobnobs..lol
When custom mapping on the dyno we dont use generic maps we are actually tuning the cars logging and getting our heads around the setup, some cars come in with unique setup ARZ ko3s with stock side mount, fuel ect.. we have to log and make our mind up what power is safe maxing the power out across the whole band would not me safe so we compromise, we found you car made good easy peak power and flow which we worked out and limited the peak torque to stop major heat build up at the top end, if there where flow issues high up we would have worked on the midrange power. but you car was unique and the setup you got was the safest. We also limit torque if the car is seeing a lot of corrections on the timing, so if running cheaper 95fuel we can only tune with this fuel, if running v-power we can tune more. The issues with the ARZ is that the me7.1knock control mapping is not as good as the later Me7.5 ecu in the AUM & AUQs so there is much smaller window for safe power.
When cars come in for generic remaps we have a 3hour window to talk chat have tea/coffee, banta, test drives in my car ect.. but if in for custom mapping then 3 hours located booked is used to test log and tune and maybe seem un-polite?? :embarassed:
You are booking our time to remap your car, in the past I have spent hours talking to customerd and cracking jokes ect which is good for PR, but means less time for mapping and logging the car, which imo is what counts and what we are getting paid for. Rob is always on the phone which rings 24/7, Jims is on the dyno and I have to get my head around the car, logs, mapping, questions from rob and the feedback from Jim in the car. If the mapping goes smooth and there are not major issues tuning or no faults which we have to pin point ect... Then we tend to bring customers in to the workshop when its safe and show them the actual mapping, live data logs, ect if we have time and we know the car is right.
Its not our mapping going down hill or customer support, its just we are spending more time on the rolling road with each car and less time chatting while working. In the past customers could come in to the workshop and stand close and chat, but due to H&S issues and liabilty policy issues we have to have customers outside workshop while a car is on the ramp and dyno. If it was down to me I would have customer in the workshop all the time taking videos and picture and getting a buzzer from the sound and smells. But now we have a crappy portacabin with old TV an magazines as a waiting room, we are not like big tuners with fancy waiting room, playstation, sky tv, sales staff which have free time to chat but charge £500 for custom maps. Swings and around abouts.
I am sorry if you felt let down by the level of conversation and feedback during the mapping session, but me and Jim had good intentions of getting your ecu software and engine spot one and safe with what we had to work with in the session.

to be fair when I went up last time I said a quick hello when I arrived and a quick chat about the spec that had changed since the last time Nick tinkered with it then that was about it until a few hours later

Thats what is like now most of the time sorry to say. A lot of the issues is now cars coming in to us with issues which we investigagte in depth, wrong fuel and wrong hw mods, I am finding myself working extra hard on the mapping, logging, dyno and ramp getting them right and safe, even working for unpaid for 3hours and ending up not mapping a car beacuse I am not 100% with how its running.
The bliss jobs are the one which have 0% ADD 0% MULT fuel trims stock and zero CF stock... I can chill, relax and have some banta.. But the poor old 1.8T is getting old on the tooth now and need all my love.. :smug:
Your car last time was on the verge of the fuel system and I needed to get my head around making at safe window so you didnt blow up on your trip home... plus needed to make good JKM dyno bragging numbers....lol
-
Think thats a fair statement Nick. like you say, try getting a Custom Remap elsewhere for the money you charge. Swings and Roundabouts!
I understand what the Op is saying in a way. Altho you cant give a running commentry of the work being carried out maybe a quick 30second update a couple of times during the session may help, its the not knowing whats goin on that kills ya!!
-
it takes longer than 30 seconds just to explain what a fuel trim is in non-techy terms

It would be nice to have it like the old days, taking customers out in my car and sh@tting the life out of them and having a social life at work ect. But the market has changed, we have had to up the game not our prices, the market is full of tuners now who can remap 1.8t and give the best map out there but not being happy with the actual software mapping which causes map related issues. So now we do actaul custom maps for all stages when car are booked in at the workshop at the cost of more time spent on the dyno and crunching logs and data.
The 1.8T engines are getting old now, and the generic maps aint cutting it or doing the older cars justice.
-

I spent 7 hours face to face, on phone, on facebook and via text trying to explain Danny at dynodaze next door about fuel trims and maf issues... only to get at the end of it.. "I cannot see how resetting a merc 128bhp 2.0 petrol ecu and running it back to back a dyno will lose power"
and you know how ott I used to be trying to explain and get my point across.. Infact you used to take the pee out of me.. :embarassed:
-
less talk more work  least people know your full concentration is on the car rather than them, i only got a quick hi when i came down but my dub got the full love

I still mention that to eveyone when they ask why??.... And when bringing the ramp down I now stop around 10" of the ground to make sure no one trying to get there fags out of there car...lol

I didn't mean to sound harsh or anything, I especially didn't want to give R-Tech a bad name. I'm more than happy with my map and will probably be back for stage 2 eventually  I think it's the fact I read on here that you had spent hours with people explaining every detail ect and it didnt happen when I was there. So it wasn't what I expected that's all. However like I said your clearly extremely busy so it's more than understandable. The work is great which is all that matters.

Some people fall asleep when I start or stand there plain face nodding..lol I can go ott with my theads and trying to explain stuff. But on the other hand it seems people what me to educate them and point them in the right direction or explain in not technical terms whats going on..
I have just resliased my fault/flaw I have been here for a few years now and in my head I expect members to understand and know what I have said in the past, old members have read and been part of topics where I have gone ott in to detail ect.. and understand the 1.8T or I expect them to, So I have got it in my head there is no real need for the old R-Tech Nick chit chat with every customer,
Now it seems I am expecting new members / VAG owner to know as much as the rest of the froums, Its as if I have moved one with the times and the older forum members forgetting the newbies need my pet talks and insprations and direction.
In my head its just repetitive info and everyone knows and dont wanna know, from the basics why use v-power, why use a 007p, whats a leaking PCV, whats a fault code, whats vcds and what do I need to do for stage1 ect (whats a remap will it blow my engine up?)
I am glad this topic popped up it has highlighted that I need to have my old enthusiasm telling every one there rights and wrongs and telling them the best way to go and how to get there. At the end of the day its the enthusiasm which got the R-Tech name out there, not just the maps.
I find my self on other forum like SSSforum, SSS facebook, ASN and tuner forums going more in depth with the understanding they dont know and I need to get my point across.
I will take on board all comments..... and if I dont shut up, bang on too much or confuse the feck out for you then you know what to do............. blame the OP.

Facebook is the worse noadays..... "Hi Nick, Why can you NOT tune my 1994 Corsa 1.2 merit?, If I fit a turbo will it help???" They make me smile, and I remember the times when I thought fitting an air filter and back box to my 1.6 Escort made 35bhp...lol

I always thought a shopping list down the door made it fast.

yep I'm defo on the limit of fuelling, that's why I've got the yellows and VR6 MAF lurking in the shed ready for my next trip up to you
At least I know you read my texts even if you don't reply

I wish there was just a land line.. too many points of contact imo.. put it this way 15+ text per day. workshop phone rings all day long not stop, my face personal face book is now Niki R-Tech Gower which I am getting around 15 tags, 20PMs per day and part of a major closed seat owners group with is on the go 24/7........... then just been to ukmkivs.net and found 15 PMs. mk5gtifroum.co.uk 10pms, Audi-sport.net 12PMs, SSSforum 22Pms, Golfgtiforum 10+pages.... oh and most mornings I go in to find 20+ emails
Now how am I going to find time to go in the Mitsubusi forums to find out how to make my new EVO4 even faster....lol
I am hoping to expand this year, new full time staff to answer emails, pms and phone bigger workshop with tuning bays and moving back into the BMW generic tuning market to cover over heads which means I can have more time to do my custom VAG tuning and maybe book days of while my staff are tuning BMWs... Most weeks we are using TWO rolling roads everyday to do custom work...lol

You don't have to explain yourself, I'll just give the office a bell when I can spare a day off, mega busy at the mo with work myself
