Title: Places to stay in the big smoke?
Post by: Jay on 26 February 2012, 10:13
My sister is coming over for a visit in April and they've found a place in Tooting (which is pretty far from me, hour and a half by car or almost 3 by Train! Silly moo), other than staying well clear of Sarf East London BRRAAAAP where else could she stay that is close to West London so it's closer to me so we can actually go out and do things without wasting half the day travelling to each other.

Chiswick is nice, can be pricey if you don't know the area

isn't it nicer (and cheaper) to stay in oxford and then travel to london if she wants to go out for the day in London?

I've tried telling them that, but her mother seems insistent on staying in London   her mother also doesn't want to go see Stone Henge because "That's where all those witches were, isn't it?"   Ignorant Religious zealots annoy the hell out of me... and I've got 2 weeks of it

Toby, there is one in Didcot about 15 mins from me, saw the price as I drove past yesterday £29 per night.

the George is nice too

I'm working on getting them to stay closer after having a short stay in London, being from SA travel times aren't an issue for them as everything is 2+ hours away

Don't know anything around Dorch-on-thames, only know an ex-work colleague lived there and he was a real tw@t  Only ever been there for my daughters choir at the Abbey once and a bus that went through there because of an accident on the A4074... will have a look online though

Have lots of braaivleis, biltong and Castle's for me

Compromise would be just out side M4 near Heathrow tube near by to London and a short drive from Oxford on M40!
I'm sure somewhere like Hayes is not too close to airport?

Only two places in London for a southern hemi to stay and that is Shepard's Bush and Wimbledon.
Tooting is nice and close to Wimbledon but you need to speak Malayalam or Punjabi, anywhere affordable near Shepard's Bush is a Sh!t hole, even non affordable is pretty grim sometimes
Hayes/Heathrow/Yewsley/Feltham/W Drayton all affordable but like the 80's bronx in places, pick your area wisely
Lots of south Africans Zims in Kingston area as it is good for West London, Wimbledon and Richmond which are all good nights out and covered by night bus.

Always Croydon............

Durban is a nice place, my mate worked at Toyota nearby and rates it for surf and general good vibe.
However I hear Jo berg and Cape town are a lot worse than London :lipsrsealed:, I can only go by what I am told as I have never been to SA
