Title: Thinking about a MK1 TT
Post by: Sam on 23 February 2012, 10:44
As stated, to replace the audi A4 estate. 225 bhp and AWD sounds appealing, plus insurance is randomly £100 cheaper than the estate (but then again it was my bday at the start of the month). So... what to look out for?

p.s. Nick has an mx5, abuse him instead

Audi TT?

Im not asking for opinions on looks or the kind of person who drives one... simply what to look out for when looking around one/looking at adverts

i pulled up alongside a mint one yesterday and it had me thinking it would be an interesting toy.... then I remembered the horrible visibility and that I am not gay. Slapped myself and continued my journey.

Don't expect to look in the rear mirror too oftern visability is limited but head room might be an issue for you Sam go out and test ride one that will tell you for sure!

Im not too fussed about the view out of the rear as I have been driving vans for years (18ft window van reversing down a narrow bungalow drive anyone?). I have just had a little search for headroom issues and it would appear that people are simply not adjusting there seats properly, plenty of 6ft+ guys doing long drives with no issues.

Thats what I have been thinking, I was just so shocked when I slammed one through insurance. Then a cheeky remap on top they should be good for 260bhp... may have to give the doc a secret visit if I get one

For me it would always be a dark blue on a TT. I think they just look so much better in that colour.

I was thinking about TT's recently too, must be something in the air  :undecided:

The only thing I can think of is the aerodynamic recall they had with the Gen 1. I don't know if they recalled every car or if they just released a reworking with a rear spoiler for down force.

If it was me though I'd be tempted to go for the 3.2. I know it's more expensive to insure, and it doesn't tune very easily compared to a turbocharged engine, and it drinks more fuel, and it doesn't sound quite as good as the R32, but it just suits the TT IMO.

As stated, to replace the audi A4 estate.

Did you not buy the A4 as a load lugger to and from Uni? Good luck with the TT.

I had a late model Mk1 Denim Blue 225 Coupe (53 reg from memory). The later versions (2002 and 2003 I think) had 18" alloys, sports suspension, alloy gearlever, silver couour around the headlights all std fit on top of the already standard xenons, full leather, heated seats etc.

I am 6"2" and had no issues what so ever with headroom. I also had a Mk2 TT also with no headroom issues.

The fuel consupmtion was not great as the combined was only just into the low 30's compared to modern engines getting mid 30's combined. I they they also recommend high octane fuel as well like the GTi.

If you can find a lowish mileage one they are pretty bullet proof if serviced regularly. There will obviously be the usual issues of maintaining a car with 4wd, high performance and a lot of electrical components.

overall an enjoyable ownership experience and something unusual to drive rather than the modern boxes

The recall was a lot more than that, susp mods, esp and the rear spoiler were fitted to help high speed stability.

Some cars plus most grey imports missed the recall and I would avoid those really.

when i saw the first tt i fell in love, I saved for years and bought a black 225r in 2002, it was superb I am a genuine 6'3 (about 3 inches taller than a lot of 6'2" people) and found tons of headroom, visability was never a problem and it drove really well.... would love another one at some stage..... a lot of the hairdresser stuff is from people who cant have one and have to have four seats...  once again great cars loads of headroom for me.....

Well I spoke to the guy and after him stating 'mint' paintwork and me questioning this he stated there are a few 'age related marks' on the car, and then admitted that there was a dent on the rear quater... at this point I agreed that we were wasting each others time and have let it be. Still on the hunt though
