Title: This Golf Anniversary TDI - Your views
Post by: greencode on 22 February 2012, 09:24
Hi. I'm hoping for a little bit of advice. I've currently got a MK 16V 2.0 GTI and am looking around at getting a Diesel Golf Anniversary MK4. I've found one for sale for around the £3,9k (130,000 miles on the clock and in mint condition with 12 months MOT and 10 months tax) mark but my main concern is the amount of money that's been spent on it in the past few years.

Obviously it's better that somebody else has had to fork out this kinda money but does this look like a normal thing that I could expect to spend every year. The details…

All of the below was spent at Audi and VW garages

2006/07: £900 spent on tyres, 80,000 service, power steering pipe etc
2008: £1,700 spent on two services, tyres, fuel pump track rod arms, vacuum pump, brake pads etc
2009: £1,600 spent on service, cambelt and tensioner, brake discs and pads etc
2010: £1,200 spent on two services, cambelt kit, water pump, alternator, front discs, pads etc
2011: £350 on service, engine flush, diesel treatment

The car's only had 2 owners from new and is a 2002/52 year.

Any thoughts, help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

No need to spend that much - it is a lot for the work carried out because its been done at dealers.

Has the cam been done? http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=140425.0

Yes, at 119,000 miles

Well that's ideal then, the things that have been done are wear and tear items and as they have been sorted the car should be good for thousands of miles now.

Just take it to a VW specialist from now on and save £££

I'm also always impressed when a 10 year old car has only had 1 or 2 owners from new i.e. if the car continually had problems then owners would want to get rid of it.

Just checking you saw the link I posted was for the CAMSHAFT? NOT the cambelt?

Sorry, no I didn't.

Umm, might need to ask him about this one as he sent me these details relating to the "cam":

2009: "119170 miles invoices show the replacement of a cambelt and tensioner"
2010: "mileage of 129005, service in July shows the a replacement cambelt kit"

It would seem odd to replace the cambelt twice in two years so maybe one of these is the camshaft?

Well make sure its been done if not i wouldn't touch it until the cam cover has been off and it is inspected - your looking at 1k to put it right if its got the cam wear issue

If your not bothered about it being an anniversary you can get the same engine in a mk4 for a lot less with possibly less mileage

I'm just waiting to hear back from the owner regarding the two references to "cam" in his receipts. From his receipt the line item read:

CAM unit price £191.40

And then he had a few other bits on there and then the final totals were:

Net    680.14
VAT   102.02
Total  782.16

Still looking at the total spent on servicing, parts etc since 2006 is £5,750 which sounds a lot to me, regardless of whether it's been serviced at VW dealers. In that space of time it's gone from 80,000 - 133,000 miles

That is a lot.

How the hell VW come up with £1,600 for cambelt and tensioner, brake discs and pads

My cam belt kit cost £240 thats inc water pump using genuine parts, Brake discs and pads should cost no more than £100.

Remember vw charge £85 an hour - and sometimes £70 just to diagnose a fault

I don't think he's mentioned every single thing on each invoice to get it up to that figure but just the main items. I wanted to make sure it's worth travelling 150 miles to see it before actually making the journey so I'm asking him a lot of questions.

I suppose I'm comparing it to how much I've spent on my current 98 Reg MK3 2.0 GTI which had 98,000 miles on the clock when I bought it in August 2008 and now has 114,000 today. So, in the space of 3.5 years I've only done 16,000 miles and spent £1,500 (after quickly adding up all of the invoices ;-)

buy a petrol anni then

They're similar kind of prices and performance aren't they? Obviously MPG is less and TAX is more though

Diesels cost more to buy and performance is very similar. I own a 1.8T and have driven standard and remapped 130 and 150 TDIs
