Title: I no its been asked ALOT 130vs150?
Post by: Kus on 02 February 2012, 19:25
Yeah i know its been asked alot but i just wanted a separate post.

Im looking to sell my 2.slow soon and purchase a diesel. I love a leon tdi 150 but there out of my price range.

Will have around £2500 £3000 very max,i want a properly rapid diesel as i dont like to hang about, which ever i choose it will get mapped.

Right i want a 150 but ive heard they have so many problems but if i got a 130 id feel like im missing out! Come on help me out and give me a good reason to go for the 130 !

Cheers lads

There is no reason to go for the 130. 150 all day.

my friends had both.. his 150 had nothing but issues... then eventually it went pop....

his 130 is now running 172...and has been fine for the last 6 months no issues... id go 130 all day just for the hassle iv heard about the 150's

That's the thing It needs to be reliable,is there anything you can do to the 150 to make sure they don't break..

i've had both.

130 is a good choice (i've had 3 cars with that engine)

but i wanted anniversary so 150 it is - i get 48 mpg most weeks and 55 on a run and it's mega quick
running a remap and exhaust. But be warned. Push too much torque and your clutch will not last

My last one lasted 4000 miles (3 months....)

other that that had no problems at all. Make sure the service history is spot on
any signs of wrong oil and any PD engine will slowly die.

i love bhp but, due to the 150 cam issues, i chose the 130, and i love it total anniversary lookalike minus headling.
but the choice is yours.

I took my rocker cover off the other day to check out mine and I had minimal wear and little to worry about after 120k, as I understand with the cams luck is involved...

The cam shafts are the same regardless if it's a 150 or 130  :lipsrsealed:

An awful lot. From what I understand you will need new timing belt/cam shaft/tappets/followers all sorts. I'd hazard a guess at £500-600 for parts and labour maybe. I think a chap on here had to have it done, maybe Rhyso or Richw...

the 150's are more revvy than 130's due to the different turbo, ecu mapping, injectors and intercooler
the rest of engine is same.

the torque is more spread out across revs so more load for longer maybe a factor.

I think I'v read that up to 90 there wouldn't be much difference, but after that the 130 would tail off...

sorry to butt in but how come the 150 seems to eat cams?or is it just the way it is?

No body knows, some say it is down to the oil, some say a possible dodgy batch of followers. Others down to the the 150 putting out more power.
But its not just the 150's which suffer as Adam said, 130's have been know to as well :lipsrsealed:

I have a 2003 150 with 110k and 12 months on no issues , slight drop in mpg due to dirty air filter , serviced it for less than 50 quid all dealer parts and spot on again .

Good 150 , with good service all day
