Right, i don't care what any of you say, we all have driven something and been blown away by how good it was, even though you'd hate to admit it!
for me the 3.0 supra Non turbo, heavy, ugly, slow, boring, driven by ponces and nearly always auto! how sporty! Drove it and ABSOLUTLEY LOVED IT!
My next was such a shock even to me that i actually bought one! its a old mans rover, started out life as a honda civic 5 door until shared with rover to make the ever exhilarating rover 400 then 45. until someone (a genius) turned it into an MG. The ZS 180 is sooooo much fun its worth the slating i get so very often!
So be honest, come out of the closet and admit that you love the new micra or whatever takes your fancy! cos your a sicko and a freak like me!

a warm welcome to the head gasket club.
-
its a v6 not a k series. no head gasket failures here!
-
You're sick in the head! and you said the word "exhilarating" in the same sentence as Rover

Engines are good and they drive surprisingly well. Just the looks don't do it for me, looks like its been ram raided into the ripspeed section of halfords. Interior is a bit grandadish. Not slating it like as we all have different tastes and you will have a lot of fun in it.
-
Sarcasm is not your forte then! I'm not sad enough to preach the merits of a rover 400!
Sick in the head? why thankyou sir!

yeh it took me a while to decide on the looks but the 17 year old boy racer in me just couldn't hate it! the thing that i really love is near zero understeer! love it.
Anyway off topic.

Im a fan of MGR's mate! Currently driving an MG ZR and get stick for it all the time. The truth, however is that it is far more focussed and a better handler than most, if not all of the golfs Ive owned.
Yes, the HG failed, it cost less to have uprated and fixed than it cost to change a cambelt on my mk4 golf.
My car proudly displays a Union flag on its rear quarter next to a chequered flag. Its a shame you dont get that any more.

Never been a fan at all. But I seem to see people saying how good they are all over forums now.
And they're dirt cheap.
I'm tempted as I want something that handles.... which my Golf does not.

The new Hyundai i20. Drove one on holiday and absolutely loved it.
Then had an i30 as a courtesy car once back home and hated it.
-
If by guilty pleasure you mean something I'd love to have but wouldn't buy in reality, then a CLK Black, or the new C63 AMG Black.
-
cars that have plesantly suprised me
volvo 360 GLT , it did sideways well
citroren saxo 1.1 , in the presence of snow it was truely an amazing machene ( rest of the time it was pants )
noting else has beaten expectations yet

Yes it is, the KV6 engine is classed as a K series and they eat head gaskets all the time.

Who cares if it blows head gaskets or you get slated for owning one? all cars have some stigma or common problem, 1.9 cdti vectra's have some sort of problem with valves or something that causes the engine to fail, mk3 golf gti's rust and have the t0sser boy racer image, anything French will have electrical faults, your car should be what you like and enjoy, not what others like!
Anyway I like rovers and mg's so a :afro: from me for that car.
My guilty pleasure was my rover 623, granddad car, but I could insure it for less than a 1.3 Fiesta or a 1.6 Astra, it had a 170 bhp honda engine and would leave all the boy racers round my way for dead, which was embarrassing for them.

Im a fan of the ZR;s aswell had 2 one was a zr 160 quick little car but the dreaded head gasket did go at 35,000 miles. Part exchanged in for an MG ZR which was a 160 but had been converted to a 220 turbo lump. Forged pistons, ported and polished head T28 turbo, front mount intercooler full system and swirl pot in the boot was running 261bhp and 238ftlb torque at 14psi was rapid. Only prob was the 160 brakes seriously needed upgrading lol.
Heres a pic of it

I've had 13 vw's and 5 had a head gasket go, 2 1300's 2 pb's and one KR, no wait 2 KR's! I've had 5 rovers / mg's and no head gasket problems whatsoever. Lovin the ZR. I had one similar way back when, suffered from a bit of understeer if im honest but other than that cheap and cheerfull RELIABLE fun.

You sir ARE sick! Having said that we had a Nissan micra rental from hertz when we went to kos. It was brilliant!

i think they look horrendous. they just look like a coffin dodgers rovers crashed into halfords.
opinion is based completely on image, never driven or been in one

Agreed, if i never drive one i will be happy :lipsrsealed:
-
Yep, the Z range MG's are a guilty pleasure for me too. ZR160's and teh ZS180's love them, looks arent for everyone and people who havent even sat in one will say theyre sh!t.
But i love driving them!
And i do get a strange pleasure out of driving really tidy, original older cars, like i drove an Allegro recently, and an old square granada.
Couldnt stop grinning!
-
Waits for Martz to come in to talk about his Mk3 :lipsrsealed:

The MG Z series look ok except from these

Hopefully this will settle the MG debate...
http://youtu.be/uUSa0UhbccU
ive never been a fan of the mk3 until i drove one, its in no way comparable to a mk2 but i get why it is the way it is, all the mk2 owners grew up n had kids.
drove it, bought it, converted!
although the bottom pulley did fall off and that was the end of that.
-
Oh dear, Tiff Needel doesnt like the ZR!
He seems to like the other MG's though.
Hes wrong anyway, although the driving position is too high and it does suffer a little bit of understeer.
Its still winning rallies now though.

You may get lucky and get a reliable one but you need to be really lucky, diesels are a better bet as they avoid all the engine and head gasket problems but no matter what happens they still look like the result of a ram raid on Halfords plus other gremlins are never far away.
They are hated in the trade and worth next to nothing, the 75 based ZT is the best choice as it is built around a newish chassis the ZR and ZS have chassis's that you can trace back 20 + years.
-
Fair enough they are worth next to nothing in the trade and are based on ageing chassis' but I know plenty of people with Rovers and Mg's that havent had any trouble with reliability. I dont think you need to be really lucky to get a reliable one.
The thing VAG nailed that MGR didnt is the perception of quality. People just presume that they are getting a reliable, quality product when they buy a VAG car. Dont get me wrong, to some extent they are, Ive loved all of my golfs and polos but they have still had problems.
Ive still had head gasket failures, clutch failures and numerous sensors etc. on all of my 'superior' cars.
-
I had an mg tf160
and it was bloody mental i loved it just couldnt get in the bloody thing being 6'3".
was fun for the summer
-
Is this the Rover/MG thread?

i dont see how any of that matters, end of the day i dont have a problem with it every week, and personnally i dont care what the local garage think of it!
have you ever driven one??? Tell ya what, tell me what shows your going to and at some point i'll meet up with you and you can have a rip in it.
-
I had a Rover SD1 once, Rovers half arsed attempt at a last ditch attempt at making something good like they used to, although the car was doomed, it was actually a great drivers car, well the Twin Plenum Vitesse V8 was anyway...
The whole Rover/Honda deal was a complete joke, and a blot on British engineering landscape... BMW had the right idea, when they took over Rover, and killed it off, but hung on to the Mini brand/name, it was a shrewd move.
The Rover 400/MG/Blah Blah Blah was, and still is nothing more than a mediocre car, If you enjoy that sort of cheap and boring build quality, buy an old Imprezza instead!

Yes I had a 1996 P 420d hatch for 6mths once :embarassed: , was good on fuel but dull to drive, the MG is the same basic chassis.
-
Pulsar GTI-R.
Hate the shape, The interior, The bonnet, The ar5e end.
Then i drove one. Oh MY God someone hand me a tissue. :embarassed:

Waits for Martz to come in to talk about his Mk3 :lipsrsealed:
 MK2's are still better.
Shaggin my mates bird. Excellent ride she was too! Felt guilty though

I used to own a rover P6, never had head gasket trouble  timing chain rattled though.

Seriously though, You can't go wrong with a oil burning rover bubble, wife had one and she loved it. Good mpg, reliable and quite quick off the lights
-
owned two cinquecnot sportings and one seicento sporting. Much more fun than my mk2 golf. mainly because Thy were like go karts when lowered and stiffened and if i smashed em up and didnt dies I would have just left it. Something brilliant about a car you dont care much about. Put a 1242cc engine out of a punto in one and It turned it into a right little machine aswell!
-
Lovin the p6! they dont make em like they used to!

You and me both! I had a cinq which I'd swapped a 1.4 16V Stilo engine into.

That's the only picture I've got of it now, but I used to use it to do track days at Lydden Hill...
At 600KG and 100BHP it used to surprise me.
-
its a v6 not a k series. no head gasket failures here!
hate to tell you mate but the v6 is a k series engine, its a 2.5 KV6, granted not as prone to head gaskets as 1.8's ect but still a k series
dont bother me though im planning to go look at one on saturday,

my (my mums) 1.2 campus 06 plate clio. Enjoy borrowing this... Very simple... nothing to go wrong, great economy and can be driven flat out without worrying about losing your licence.
Currently shod with winter tyres on just the front... so added va va voom
-
Ford Ka - honest and simple, if only they'd fitted a less asthmatic motor to the base ones.
The ZS180 got stonking reviews when it came out. Never driven one, given the opportunity I'd give it a whirl.
Motorbikes off road. The reason I will not take my motorbike test is that I would kill myself pretty quickly.

Ford Ka - Sad but true.. they can be fun to drive. Cousin bought a brand new one, before it fell to bits it was fun.

Why so the engine can blow up and you can pay 10 times as much to insure it? looked into insuring one for me just now. cheapest was
Pay Annual
£13,768.96
Pay Monthly
1 x £3,371.88
9 x £1,302.76
Total: £15,096.72

talking of rovers  best car i've ever driven was my rover 114 gta 1.4 8v mpi in british racing green, loved the little car after spending a month getting it on the road, biggest regret was selling it
