And here it is. A very nice clean example of a MK3 Golf GTi. Yes, I have expressed a hatred for this model, yes, I have given out a lot of stick for chaps who own them BUT this one is about as good as they get. It is definately the best MK3 I have ever driven (tbh its the only one I have driven). The reason I bought it - ventured in to the MK3 for sale section by mistake as I pressed the wrong link and it jumped. There it was, no brainer really.

Wheels are the first thing once I get sometime to do them in the meantime it is the wifes daily drive to work and back.

Just seen this on murrymints post and thought I could do with these to tie up the old gal when she is in the dock. Any ideas if these will bolt down on the pavement or do I need a adapter to make them fit? Ordered the ropes to so these babies will stop her floating away in the floods!

FFS! there is no way them puny little bars are gonna hold that sort of weight, what on earth are you thinking?
your gonna need at least a 2" diameter chain to hold that, and in a high wind, well fook your luck, that thing is gonna cause chaos in the channel when it breaks free.

Because its a girls car and I bought it for my wife to use. However, it does drive nice and it is 'fun' BUT it will never have the character of a MK1/2 and they never will. Hence the price of them.

Just gave it a effortless clean with a jet wash and dried it of with microfibre. Guy has certainley made cleaning it soooo easy. I really would recommend you all get Guy to clean yours as it WILL be so much easier to take care of, bird sh!t just fell away without any issues at all.

Mid life thing? A MK3? Ermmmmmm no.

Midlife crisis starts in 4 years, maybe a classic old sports car like a water cooler 911 or something.

Sorry mate.

Bit of a update from todays drive down to get number plates sorted. On my way home we took a different route and hit traffic. This was due to Police doing random checks on vehicles. Now in 15 years I have not been pulled over but as I was in a MK3 GTi I guess they thought I should be checked with all my documents (which fortunately I carry with me!) 1/2 hour later of my life wasted and I was on my way. I will add, there was a decent MK2 a few cars up that they let drive on by, says it all really.

After nearly sliding her into a roundabout yesterday, decided to change the front tyres so bought Bridgestone Winter tyres. Got them on and they are perfect. Had to tell the tyre fitter off though, blo0dy weights on the outside of the wheel is not a good look. Muppet! He rebalanced them without moaning about it.

Took a picture of her in the snow this morning, kind of reminds of the Titanic before it left and hit the iceberg!

I'd be more upset if I bought a Rover MG and that will never ever happen. A VW is a VW. It also handles like a MK2 so I do enjoy driving it.

Ps, MG's aren't that bad.

I am over qualified in my opinion due to having sh!t loads of MK2's over the years, including the iconic Rallye. And yes this MK3 does handle as well as due to the perfectionist that the previous owner is and having it setup spot on. I am sure many would agree that know this car.

A Mk2 and Mk3 should handle the same as their suspensions are virtually identical.

The difference is in the greater weight of the Mk3

Well yes and no, mk3's are underdamped as standard and have very poor body control, mk2 handles a lot better as standard.

ta fella...

I think what we can learn from this is that there is a mahoosive difference in quality between some cheapo ebay coilies that cost £150 and spending £500+ on a really decent suspension and getting ride height and damping etc spot on

Martz - when you get the new wheelz on I thoroughly recommend getting it laser aligned... I did it with the mk1 and it took the handling to another level ;)

Indeed, most vehicles will handle 10 times better with quality products and fitted correctly. Is it also poly bushed all round on just on the rear?

Yep, intend to do this once I have sorted those wheels out. Won't be until April now as I am reluctant to sort them out and put them on when the risk of the elements is out there!

Parts can be the same but the whale weight of the MK3 throws everything out of whack! requiring completely different parts to perform the same! Virtually!

just the rear iirc - I ordered in some decent top mounts for the front from some VW outfit in london that I got the suspension and rear polybushes from but I can't remember what they were or what the outfit was called. it was a while back

as for the rear polybushes... they were the decent purple ones.. can't remember what they were called either (in fact can hardly remember my own name today! )

anyway... yeah... I would say waiting for the spring to come will reap rewards with the new wheels etc... I always wanted her on ATS cups but everyone poo-pooed it saying it was soooo 2007

was thinking about you saying about lack of powaaar.... was wondering... apart from a decent service... what you could do to give it bit more pop. It already has GolfGTI.co.uk stickerrzz on adding 10bhp.  New cam?

have you any other plans for her?

It was fantastic, so cheap to run and comfy too. I must admit thought I am wondering how well a VR would compare to a sorted MK2 16v (my old one)?

Things to sort out in the next month -

Needs a clean twice a week
Rear window motors need replacing and need rear sound proofing
Alloyz sorted innit (going red rims and grey centres)
A damn good service and laser tracking done.

And thats it really.

Yep agree Shaun, however it's just a set that are sitting about. I have a set of BBS (in my sig) that will get the full treatment. I am toying with the idea of going Gunmetal centre with white or red lips? I think it would work.

The other 17's will be battered around anyway so not too bothered, got red paint left over from a while back so may aswell use it up!!!!!

Yep, exactly what I am thinking. 204hp standard ticks the boxes on a MK2. My bus is pretty quick given its weight etc and I can't help think what it would be like in a MK2. I assume its a case of drop in and use VAG loom and ecu? Anyway, worry about that later on. Idea is to find one with a fecked engine with all the work done to convert it............

Exactly Jay, was going for Polo GTi (2001 or so), but not knowing much about them, until now.  I saw Guy's one and knew it has been well looked after and as it's a daily ride it has eveything my wife needs to get to work in. Just need to sort a few little bits out and it's spot on. Cheap motoring for now, I can use that fuel saving in my V6 Galaxy and listen to the nice noise it makes whilst heating up the planet! :lipsrsealed:
Title: Re: Martz Super Blue 8v

Yup the V6 in the Galaxy is a VW engine, ECU etc that Ford decided to use as all mechanical parts (they wouldn't let VW use their 2.3 4 pot engine  ) forgot to ask, is yours a 4Mo or whatever Ford called the 4wd Galaxy? 204 HP would be sweet in a Golf, I know the engine would be heavy, but lets be honest, that sound and power would be awesome !

Let's just all be glad that Ford didn't let VW use the 2.3.

Looking mint, as it would coming from Guy and nice to see it's staying that way with the next owner.

So, a little update. Nothing done to her at all. I am going to buy 2 rear window motors to fix that little issue, exhaust heatshield still needs sorting (may do that at the weekend) and got a set of rims going on her thursday, which is nice.

The best thing about it, is I can change them to whatever colour I want. Got 2 sets now so can change the faces and the outers.

So, my thinking is gunmetal centres and brushed silver outers. Thats a combination that works and looks great.

May do the other set white lip and gloss black?

Cheers Shady, likewise.

Today she had a good ol' service and a few other little bits sorted out. All done before MOT time so no suprises will appear. Still not a fan of MK3's but this one is a good un! Looks like it will be about for a while.

Question .......... Will a MK2 tinkered engine such as that that TSR build in a 8v form slot straight in and plug and play with the excisting loom?

Not really tbh, depends on base engine but block can be different in terms of breather layout etc.

So, what would be involved with a ABF conversion?  DH perhaps could guide?

ABF would be very easy tbh, engine loom and ecu would be all that you really need.

Really easy to do in a day

donor engine, gearbox and flywheel including clutch etc (could use 8v box but i wouldn't), engine loom, loom from ECU to fusebox, ECU,
Hydro bits for the clutch and gearbox and gear linkages
Transponder and chip from donor cars key
Clocks if u want, (8v clocks will work tho)

Your mk3 is late spec so your pedal box has all provisions for the Hydro parts etc as does your brake fluid reservoir

rear drivers side mount is different on ABF cars although 8v would work ok

all plug and play..  but not much gain TBH..

I have got another set of wheels now so these are for sale. A1 condition with good tread on tyres, will be popping them on the for sale section tomorow.

Being replaced with 16" beetle Houston alloys, they are currently in a bit of a mess as they were diamond cut and the laquer is worming and flaking. Might just go silver with these ones.
