Post by: dTEA on 16 January 2012, 08:43
2 of my friends have been told that their broadband is being doubled as Virgin up their top end speeds to 120mb. So All the lower packages will go up for free!

Are they? I get 38 down, 8 up on Infinity. I'm hoping BT do something similar!

I was meant to get my ADSL2+ activated yesterday, was still waiting this morning before I went to work... Most likely because it was a Sunday it didn't go live. No VM in my street and no Infinity till at least 01/06/2012 - which was originally 01/12/2011 but got pushed back again

oh well got new interwebz arriving at work tomorrow (if BT don't f#ck up again and push it back AGAIN), should be able to live with downloading at work with 100Mb up and 100Mb down, burstable to 1Gb

I've recently noticed by internet connection icon on the bottom right tells me 1Gbps, it used to say 100Mps
I'm finding I would like 10MB upload I'll be happy for them to take 10 off my download sometimes

That 1Gbps is the connection between your PC and  the router, not your internet speed  Just means you can transfer files on the local network quick than before, if you ever do do that.

Haa I know Jay I was shinning my cock that I've never seen 1Gbps
Anyways I wanted to ask if ethernet cables over 5 meters is worth upgrading to CAT6? I've got CAT5 about 5 Meters in length would it affect the 30MB?

Yeah standard Virgin cable CAT5, its aright just didn't think forking out on expensive cable would make any difference?

Got cable 2 meters from the driveway, its been there about 14 years.
Can we get cable, no. Apparently it would give Virgin a monopoly

Snap, though ours is just at the end of the cul'de'sac, newly built 3 years ago... so they could have laid the fiber then...

Still reckon they will double your speed...
So 10MB->20MB
     20MB->40MB
etc..

Likewise, I recently moved into a new build estate about a mile or so from the main town centre where I used to get a solid 30gb from Virgin and now I've got a fvcking measly 0.4 gb tthrough BT/ Sky. Hurry up you useless cvnts!

That's very bad, give them a call to get it sorted. Ask for a SNR reset and KBD test on the line (also do a little research on those two so you also know what you're talking about when you speak to them and they know you know what they are  ) it may not be their fault and could be a problem with the router, your cabling or micro filter.

I was BT then Be and only ever got 6mb of 24mb so when asking BT if theirs would be quicker than virgin they still said no...and overall that seems the case though some people are lucky with BT.

Still only sync'ing at 8Mb  and my ADSL2+ capable router is reporting it's using annex A which is ADSL, not annex M which is ADSL2+ Lets see what PN have to say!

Mmmm.. 100mb synchronous.. get some speedtest.net tests done please! BT 100mb leased lines aren't exactly cheap..
Title: Re: Virgin doubling broadband speeds
Post by: Jay on 16 January 2012, 20:52
Nope, they're not cheap, but we've got big plans to cover most of the costs and already more than halved our bill

If it does go live tomorrow I'll get a speedtest done, though I never got above 56Mb, if I remember, from our London datacentre using speedtest.net which is on a 1Gb link

Just got off the phone with PN and the order didn't go through automatically with the BT system so that's been placed for me and should take 5-7 working days... should have guessed, the might BT system letting us down again. I know it's BT because at work our migrations sometimes fail "unexpectedly" or not at all in BT's systems.

He did try fobbing me off at first saying my exchange wasn't ADSL2+ enabled, until I told him about my digging I had done to find it was ADSL2+ enabled

How wrong was I.....

Subsequently, Virgin Media representatives have been back in touch to clarify matters, saying:

"Following our announcement last week that we are doubling the broadband speeds our cable customers receive, we’ve started to write to let them know how it will work and what to expect. Our first email, intended for our 100Mb customers, was accidentally sent to some customers on other tiers which may have led to some confusion.

We’re sorry for any misunderstanding and will be writing to customers again soon to clarify how the upgrade will affect them. In the meantime, as part of our double speed programme we are delighted to confirm that 50Mb customers will actually be upgraded to 120Mb, meaning even more Virgin Media customers will be able to take advantage of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK."

Some 50Mb/s customers will see an initial rise to 100Mb/s before moving up to the full whack 120Mb/s, the telco spokespersons added.

Just wondering why I never got the email  :undecided:

Anyway... I have seen speed easily go over the 50MB mark... so pretty sure this isnt fixed anyway.

We've had the equipment installed downstairs, waiting for it to be sorted at the other end... but looks like it should be done by the end of the day, not sure if I'll get a speedtest done today though, will as soon as I can though

Just copied a 2Gb file to our London servers at 100Mbps   we can get 20 x the porn now

Using my work PC remotely and it's almost like using it on the same network locally, and I'm only on 8Mb down and 0.4Mb up for the next week when I get ADSL2+ 17Mb estimated.

Unfortunately that's only at work and a lot of bandwidth will be allocated for other uses in the coming weeks/months, but we'll still get a decent enough speed most of the time  Will ask my bosses if I'm allowed to whore it for my uses, I'm sure they're also wanting to make use of the fast downloads

That is awesome! We have 50/5 shaped per computer for the second line and NOC lot which is fun. Just had a 10G link to our new data centre installed too.. I'd love a go on it, but obviously all it takes is one 1gb or 100mb link across your route and the speeds are bottlenecked :(

Have you seen any of the stuff about the Bournemouth fibre band project? 1g to the door for a very reasonable price per month

On another note my line dropped for an hour yesterday and so did customer services
