Ive been a thinking, does anyone else agree that a proper forum meet would be awesome? Centered around a RR day, perhaps something like the event below? Even if my car was to low to run on that particular rolling road!
http://www.golfgti.co.uk/viewpastevents.asp?eventID=61
I was thinking somewhere around northants/midlands as it makes the event more open to people as it puts it within a 2 hour travel time of a lot of users. I know its still not ideal for the peeps in the far north but my moving further up the country i feel it would then isolate the south coasters an make the teavel time not worth it.
Id really like something like this to happen as at the mo Rolling road days seem to split between North and South. And a rolling road day of forum members only might be more appealing to the newer peeps among us an Some MK5/MK6 owners as shows might not be there thing.
Im sure a day spent inhaling fumes an watching BHP figures is something that appeals to us all!
Id be happy to dedicate a lot of time to assisting/organising this if officially sanctioned by the gods an there is enough genuine interest.
An mods i know this should be in events but will get more exposure here
So.... What are we saying?
-
I'm up for it
-
Good! So thats me an doc.... Anyone Else?
-
I'm up in Scotland so most places in England will be a bit of a trek, but I like the sound of it.
If we were going to go to Silverstone could we not organise some track time too?
We have hundreds of members so I'm sure we could get enough numbers to justify a private session or two.
-
You allowing non-Golfers to attend seeing as we make up most of the forum
-

No...
Sh*t... gimme time to get mine back on the road, I'm up for it. So far I've only met people at shows and depending where the show is depends on who you meet, well apart from Chuff of course.
-
I'd come along...but my car would just be overshadowed by some of the beats on this site :undecided: :embarassed:
I'd probably have to kill my self if Jonnyturbos mk4 parked next to me.
-
Yeah by coincedence i'll be running an audi bummers meet on the same day... Guess i can merge them!
An yeah, lanarkshire is Faaaaarr! Hopefully we can make a proper day of It so its worth your while coming down. Dont know about track time as that will mean expense, dont know how comfortable peeps would be with that but it can certainly be looked at. An hundreds of
Members can sometimes mean lots of interest, 50 confirming, 8 turning up!

Give over... what do you dive? mine only looks good in photo's.
If you've got a golf then it will always look less out of place than some these bloomin Audi's .
-
I'm in.
Nick
-
Im in... the audi
-
Depends when it is as my golf isn't on the road yet, but as long as I've got the golf on the road by then I'm in.

Good that people are open to the idea, i'll start chrckin out locations,
Googled the silverstone lot earlier.... All went tits in '07!
Whoops
-
I'l come if it's close enough and the weathers good castle combe was a wash out  What about rockingham track?
-
Jord, are you skilled in herding cats?
Experience in pushing sh*t uphill?
Right man for the job in getting this crowd of miscreants together if you have.
Personally I think the Castle Combe Action Day is the right environment for this and for those who MUST indulge in willy-waving I think there's a dyno outside the circuit.
Alternatively, maybe you're just looking to practice your 'p*ssing in the wind' skills?
Not wanting to totally blow this out, but it seems foolish to try and organise a completely isolated event for the forum when there's already a lot of other things going on, which people just need to get along to!
-
Not everyone on the forum likes shows, and forum only events have been done succesfully in the
Past. I just think its finding the right location and attraction.
Plus i can make something from nothing in most things in life. So its worth a shot!
-
im game if its close to me :)
aslong as its not like the last meet i went to when there was me smithy, one other lad from here (Forgot his name) and some guy from club gti.
-
Sorry, when is this likely to be??
-
Just gathering interest at the mo, seeing if its worth pursuing!

Agreed. Shady's meet at cherwell valley was excellent, ended up at that museum which was really nice, plenty of people came with their families.
-
Yeah that was a great day out!
Nick
-
Is it just for proper GTIs or can mk3s come along
-
We can play: Finish the 1.6 engine off.

There have been some great forum meets in the past.
Apathy and drop outs seem to be the order of the day now.
I went to 2 very good ones up at Newark
Quite a few of us went up to Skegness for Gaz's event
And yes Shady's Oxford/Gaydon one was great!
Also forum stands at national type events get good turnouts.
Other forums have well supported events (UK Passats)
I hope a good event can be done for this Forum.
-
I'd really be up for a 10th Birthday Party for the forum.
The difficulty will be in hosting an event that caters for all the different interests that this forum contains. And, linked in with that difficulty, the challenge of finding a suitable venue. Ideally we would need somewhere that allows some track action (preferably more than just a dragstrip), some space for show'n'shine, perhaps hire a mobile dyno (thinking about the one Hammond used to test his Shelby GT500 on Top Gear) and of course accommodation, catering and facilities.
Just out of interest, when is the forum's birthday? Obviously it's this year but are we specifying a particular month or is it just any time in 2012?
-
please be summer time

It's in May I think.

Aye but the centre of England isn't what we are trying to find lol.
With regards to R-tech, I have no issue going there but tbh I think the event should be more than a glorified RR session.

227.1 miles, or 3 hours 53 minutes from here.
If I'm in Portsmouth then it's in the region of 150 odd miles and 3 hours drive time.

old airfield would be good for a meet, however most have a pretty rubish surface as far as i know...?

Blyton?

True.. What about an rr day then all convoy to a campsite.. Wack up the tents.. Crack open the beers and pass out

Again people, costs of hiring such venues are expensive, especially in summer!
How about a full attendance at Volksfest?

whatever you do, if outlay is involved, then a NO REFUND policy will be required

what facilaties do we need at said venue ?
i know a few large places that i chould get the use of for free, admitdly out in the sticks but may be abel to sort barns marques to do stuff in, and probaly a trailer full of bogs.
may be a possoblity for those intrested to have an outing to a venue with multi rolling road but i would have to ask very nicely
and would need volonteers that actualy turn up to help with setup and tidy up tho or charge people and employ some minions to do it.
-
problem is location jord, some of the northern monkeys are afraid to head past watford gap
good luck mate, after the last forum birthday related event with pub, bbq etc etc all planned and laid out for a CRAP turn out, you have your work cut out.
Harewood VW fest FTW, i should be north by then

and would need volonteers that actualy turn up to help with setup and tidy up tho or charge people and employ some minions to do it.
If something like this is done I'll help set up and tidy up.
I know randomjord said members only but my mate used to put up marques for a living so I'd try and drag his lazy work shy ars3 along to help set up.
Also a mate of mine runs a rodeo bull, inflatable bungee run and loads of that sort of stuff, should be able to get it cheep or to save outlay could tell him to do it pay as you play if people are interested in any of that sort of stuff? he does shows for hells angles and motorbike clubs so is used to an unruly bunch of drunks.

tbh I think the event should be more than a glorified RR session.
What do you suggest, as its very difficult to cater for everyone's taste?
Already suggested quite a few ideas.
The best would be a multi-interest event with an open area for general show'n'shine, some track availability and perhaps a mobile RR.
It's by no means viable as it's definitely too far north but Crail, an airfield, offers track action, drag strip and plenty of open ground for parking so if we could get something like that but more accessible then I think that would be a winner.
-
GTi International then?
-
Not big enough to arrange our own event then?
How do forums like UK Passats do it then?
-
I think were big enough. 100-200cars would be an ok turn out. and theres atleast 100 regulars on here
-
Count me in went to a few bmw meets but now i'm driving a golf would be good to meet a few golf drivers
-
I think we are more than big enough! Just need to galvanise support for this!
-
My old dear works for Brandon tool hire, if it's some large field type thing for camping then I can enquire about toilets and showers etc...... They do alot at silverstone for those type things so shouldn't be a problem. Obviously when things get more organised let me know what is needed, and rough numbers, and I'll get a quote. Put it this way, I can hire things for 1% of normal public prices. Obviously transport to and from the venue/s will be set in stone, but I'm willing to help out with organising it all if needed.
-
Ok guys im now working on something to coincide with another event.
will keep you posted!
-
oooo im excited :)
-
I'm in
-
i would be up for it if i can make it

Is there some sort of conclusion anywhere in all these pages?
Is it why not use an existing event like Inters and make that the meeting point?
In fact, that makes the most sense by miles - it's central-ish. It has built in free entertainment. It has camping/hotel/vaughn's house () options. And... it's nice and easy in that the event organisers sort out the numbers - I register the club for the 2 days and then we just have to pick the club stand when ordering tickets.
Forum 10th anniversary, 25th GTI International - hell, maybe some forum friends will have a get together :)

I suppose Jord is right, if the plan to carry out the GolfGTi 10yr party is to be in a field in Leicestershire, then so be it.
The next plan would be what do we want to do when there, i.e, fancy dress, gazebo, or even a forum t-shirt in sort of solidarity movement?
-
Forum t-shirts FTW
