Hi Everyone, Is anyone else's 8v quite juicy (Uses alot of fuel)
One of my mate's has a 2.2 Astra SRI and im putting more note's in my tank then him.
Natural consumption or my car badly over fueling.?
-
Well winless you say how you are using can't realy help lol.
-
Depends on your driving style, I regularly saw 40mpg in my 8v.
-
I get 33-35mpg regularly in mine, but relatively short trips. Longer trips can be ~36-27mpg avg over a tank.
Coolant temp sensor is a favourite for causing over-fueling

Well my engine is 100% standard apart from a little cb-28 valve which i have closed as i hate the sound lol.. And a after market back box but im putting anywhere between £30 - £50 a week. I used to have a Prelude 2.2 Vtech and i wasnt putting anywhere near as much in.
-
How far do you drive per week?
-
Go and see my mum every 2 day's which is about 3 mile round trip.. Then the Missus goes to work (4 days in 3 day's off) and back which is about 20 mile round trip
-
sounds like your doing too much fuel to me, i do about the same miles, all short town trips and my 180bhp clio only does £20/25 a week
coolent sensor like the other guy said?
-
Around town mine is 26 motorway trip somewhere I get 40.
-
Beats mine, i'm getting 15mpg around town and max i've seen is 28mpg on a long journey :(
-
i still get 25 ish outa mine when booting it to city so somethings definately up
-
i got about 37mpg when mine was standard then about 30 when i finished playing with the motor and decided to keep it in the garage for the year and get it painted and fettle some more with the motor temp senser???
-
My 8v only gets about 32mpg and I do nearly 40 miles a day :(
Interestingly though, my coolant temp seems to hardly get above 75 and only really goes up if I've sat for about 10/15 mins. Could this be a similar problem with coolant sensor as well ?

THERMOSTAT IS STUCK OPEN
-
And I solve that by?
Please don't just say close it
-
Replace it
-
Sounds like a plan. Ta.
-
I'VE replaced coolant temp sensor and thermostat and still getting no more than 28mpg.
I did just over 80mile last night and averaged 31.7mpg.
This thirsty 8v thing seems quite common now..

They won't change your mpg
-
Try checking the lambda sensor and all of it's wiring, that's the next thing on my list!

I think a big factor is how well the engine has been looked after, mine had a very extensive service history and was a very healthy engine.....it made 124bhp on Carbon's rollers with only a cat-back and panel filter.
-
Journey type, length and the time of year are big factors.
Shorter journeys at the moment will use a lot more fuel, as the warm up stage will be longer to compensate for the lower temperatures.
I used to do the best part of 100 miles a day (50 miles to work). The MFA would say 42mpg, which worked out to be about 38 mpg, which was pretty good for a constant 70 with occasional bursts of over-taking.
I now do about 250 miles a week. Most of my journeys are to work (6 miles round trip) and then to Uni 3 days a week (60 mile round trip)
The MFA now says about 34 MPG, which is a bout 30 mpg in real terms.
I'm sure if I went back to longer journeys the mpg would go back up.

When I bought mine a few months back it was obvious mine isn't a well looked after motor. Since I bought it I've replaced the common parts, I.e plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm,oil and filter. Then thermostat and temp sensor. Next is MAF and lambda.
Sorry for hijacking your thread dude
-
Mine can get 38-40mpg on motorway even on a 40 mile round trip if driven around 3000 revs. Even around town I can get very high 20's.
Obiously it depends on how you drive, but mine was also fully serviced only 3 or 4 months ago. All new filters and fluids etc has gotta hrlp MPG.....
-
They are not good on juice, my 8v was never any better than 25mpg.
-
My 1.6 used to get 40MPG.
It's pretty shocking ATM though. Sitting at 80-100 is easy but does drink. The 8V used to average 42 worked out on paper at 80 MPH.
-

Yeah mines no better than 26.
I can get 40 on a long trip, but over 2000 miles it's telling me I got a average of 26.
-
I do 50 miles a day on mixed roads and get an average of 34-37mpg everyday when I pull onto the work drive.
The car has been fully serviced all its life and I think it does help as my mates 8v has never been looked at apart from oil top ups and he barely gets 30mpg with the same type of journey.
My 34-37mpg journey does include a 90+ leptons a day blast up the A421 for 10 miles too.
-
Average for me was 34MPG but was pretty much all motorway. Average round town was about 20MPG.
-
So what is everyone's overal average?
Like I said mine is 26 over 2000 miles. That includes motorway and town. My engine has been extremely looked after
-
My average is normally 31/32..
I do a mix of driving but mainly motorway (although over the moors to get the motorway).
I can drive from home (Oldham) to my GFs (Castleford, Leeds) on the motorway and average around 38 for that trip at a steady pace (Try and keep under 80/85)
I do notice that my car doesnt get to 90 on longer motorway trips?
Using standard fuel but car could probably use a service.
-
I'm about a 30-ish average, 42-44 on the motorway if I james may it. Around town its horrendous, but thats mainly down to how addictive my popping, banging and farting exhaust sounds on overun.
-
+1
-
Looked this morning. 33.6 after 4,512 miles.
Quite happy with that, pretty much all long runs which help that figure though.

34 on the 8v GTI.

I only drive around town lol the 528i is doing 20mpg
-

lol my mega bhp t-5R did 14mpg around town
-
Managed 42 mpg the other on the way into Notts, but other than that its mid to high 30s on M'way and low to mid 20s in town. Barely goes past 20 on the way to and from work cause its 1.7 miles each way
-
Should see somewhere in the region of 250 - 300 miles to the tank. Break that down properly and that's 20.66 - 24.8 mpg in the real world. Don't take your mfa reading as gospel fellas!
-
That's why I said a average over thousands of miles.
My 8v gets 99.9mpg down hill
-
Re-Naming thread to 'What's you MPG'
-
I know its no an 8v but I've hit 55mpg in my 16v
-
Best I've seen so far is 26mpg sat at 50, lowest being 15
-
stop bluddy moaning....
why buy a GTI if your gunna moan about filling it up??
a good serviced car will prove to be worthy.
-
Mine at the moment (2.0 AGG) is making 35.64 MPG

that seems too low. my 185bhp 2litre clio only hit 8mpg when i drove it flat out on basically a track
-
Yeah my 2.8 vr6 does that
-
I think i got just over 100 miles from a quater of a tank!
So about 33MPG on the motorway... with a very heavy foot
-
