i have just read honest john :undecided: web site about the new mot rules
example hids fitted to cars must have self leveling and washers if not fail
wrong colour bulbs fail
warning lights on dash if lit fail
and soon on i did not see any age related stuff so maybe alright if you have a older car
i think there are going to be a lot of us changing things on our cars before we have a mot
of course it could be wrong and ihave not read it right.

here is the link http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/legal--motoring-advice/2011-12/new-mot-rules/
hope it works for all you decat boys read the last bit near the bottom

Interesting to see some of the items that they will now be testing.
-
....and I guess the price is going up too!!!!

I think essentially "if its fitted, it must work correctly" is the way its going.
Thank goodness they are tightening up on HID's and headlight adjustment - tired of being blinded.

yes i failed on a ABS light on...although this makes no sense as the brakes just work as if the ABS is disabled..which means it passed the brake test but failed just because the light was on...
Seriously everybody..they are really getting too strict...
well well well...we used my friend's vagcom and the light went out...
great the MOT place could not have cleared all the faults beforehand...(wish I had done so!!)
you have been warned..
-
so a safety system in your case ABS had a fault and was not working, i aint surprised it failed. (by the way ABS light has been a failure for a long time)
and then you expect the MOT tester to clear your fault codes for you? think your taking the piss. easiest thing to do is keep your car maintained and it should be fine.
-
if your car has ABS it dosent have a load compensator valve on the rear wheels as that function is done by the abs
so if you brakeing heavly in low grip conditions the back end can easly lock up before the frount end, with meany people this often leads to a short off road experiance
-
fun fun fun in garage receptions from today onwards

As you work in a garage Chuff do you know if they are planning on putting the price up.
-
oh sorry i thought that the ABS automatically is disabled if not functioning properly...

It can even mean you defy gravity and drive upside down.
-
ok ok...i see your point.

My black GTi gave me brown trousers when I had some idiot pull out on me in a country lane. Bulb had blown on the ABS.
Anyone who says you can disconnect the bulb and it's just the same as an older car is an idiot.
-
ABS only controls the rear bias on about 1995 and newer cars.
The early mk3's had rear bias valves, so an idiot maybe but depends on the year of the car..

I must have been too thorough in the past with my pre MOT checks. Some of these new items listed as a fail i presumed already were.
Here are a few :embarassed:
Especially this one! Missing, or split/damaged dust covers on steering and suspension ball-joints will result in failure if they will allow dirt to enter the joint.
If a headlamp bulb is not seated correctly the resulting beam pattern will be indistinct and this will result in a test fail.
Damaged or chafed fuel pipes will result in failure.
A catalytic convertor fitted as original equipment but missing will be a reason for failure.
A rear door that cannot be opened from the outside using the relevant control is a new reason for failure.
Doors must be easy to open and close – hinges, catches and pillars will be inspected.
-
I think the above is fine.
The one that made me laugh was you have to have an illuminated speedo that works.
-
vosa just set a maxium charge for a mot and it up to each garage to set the cost of mot so sum may go up sum may not
-
I had my MOT yesterday. He wanted to fail me on a missing spot lamp, I had to rip the other one out for him to pass it... just because I had one, apparently I needed the other aswell.
-
interesting stuff
-
A vehicle will only fail if the CAT is missing if it is subject to a full CAT test, therefor Diesels are fine!

Going forward, my interpretation of this is that it will not be fine.
If a cat/DPF was fitted from new, it's got to be there.
Need to clarify this as to how far back it goes, as I would ideally dump the cat off my 1996 Golf3 TDI, but don't want a PITA come MOT in August.
-
IIRC it's vehicles from 2005/2006 registrations that will require all components to be where they were when it left the factory.
Including CAT/DPF.

MOT prices are governed to a set maximum.

From what I got sent through to work from VOSA it just says a CAT needs to be there for a full cat test which i why i interpreted that a diesel would be ok?
Unless I've missed a different ruling?

MOT price in Greenock is £10 ha ha its great when the local money man trys to close down all the small MOT stations by opening up a mega centre testing 6 cars at once
-
I read that cars that have modified suspension will now be subject to a failure if they are deemed inadequate? Think a few of us are screwed then...
-
That's only if when they jack it up springs are rattling abouut and such

As far as i'm aware that's always been a requirement. Springs have to be secure and correctly seated.

My car did not come with a cat from the factory therefor it should pass.
