Hi all, I've read in different places that you need to be careful about oil based panel filter in the GTI.
There is a comment in the product spec that states "the arresting stickiness of the dust retaining oil gives a high level of filtration to protect the engine from all containments brought in by the air"
Can anyone tell me if the ITG panel filter is ok for my GTI please?

Am sure it will be fine, just different because it's a foam filter rather than a cotton one that needs a little oil on it once you clean it. You will still need to remove the foam one to clean it. My dad had a ITG panel filter in his 1.9 TDI and it was fine.
Not sure you'll see much benefits over your OEM paper filter though, go the full hog and get an induction kit

Thanks for the reply mate. I thought that the panel filter offers little if you don't have a remap but does offer some improvement if you do have a remap?

Nothing without a remap and very little with, as Kenny says just go for an induction kit

Cheers Steve, what could I expect from an induction kit?

More noise.

If your after a panel filter Try a pipercross one which is the same as the VWR one so must be ok. It's lightly oiled foam. I have one on mine and it's been fine though I doubt they make any difference in performance really.
I'm going to get either the pipercross stage 2 induction kit of an ITG maxogen as they're the only ones I think actually work. The carbonio doesn't look a good design IMO.

I have the Carbonio n mine and cannot fault it. Sounds great and looks good and does what it's meant to do. I prefer it to others as its closed off and doesn't make a mess of your engine bay!

VWR haven't been using Pipercross for a while, there filters are now ITG's

Ah right.
As far as panel filters go they're much of a muchness and do very little. I always buy one when I get a new car then wonder why I bothered.

What we need is a before and after run on the Dyno - OEM v's performance panel filter on a mapped car...
Mr The Doc, how about it?

Yeah that would be vey interesting.
Like most things regarding tuning its all opinion and not alot of fact so to see what actually works and what doesn't would be great.
I would love to see different intakes comparison to see which offers the best gains.

an old thread but thought i would add something;
i put my OEM air box back on yesterday as i didn't like the ITG intake. far too many strange noises, and the low-mid range performance felt worse to me, though top end was better.
anyway i have a pipercross panel filter which I've run from day one of getting the car.
i removed this to clean it and while i was on yesterday, and while doing so removed the plastic grate at the bottom of the air box which i had left in the first time round.
as far as i can tell this is only there to support the standard paper filter, which is very deep - (panel filters are only about 1/4 depth of this), it also probably is there to reduce noise and possibly prevent very large debris from making it as far as the filter.
anyway, i removed this (it just pops out) and the car sounds nice and OEM. maybe a tiny bit more induction noise and the feeling is VERY similar power wise to the intake i had but the lower rpm range is as smooth as it was OEM. in my opinion much nicer to drive than with an intake.
i tried standard and stage 1 maps and the car just didn't seem happy until 3000rpm with the intake fitted.
so basically i agree panel filters probably make very little difference but IMO if you don't run the deep standard paper filter you can remove this restrictive plate and benefit more from a decent panel filter. so panel filter and air box grid = probably no gains but panel filter and this grid thing removed must be worth something? look how restrictive this plate is. and its free to remove and take 2 minutes.
