I've been meaning to make a 'project log' of my new MK3 1.4 since I got it but didn't really have the time. So a few changes have taken place since I've owned the car in the last year.
Anyway, this is my first VW and at first wasn't that keen on the MK3. I was after a MK4 if I'm honest but couldn't really find a decent one on the budget I had in November 2010  After a bit of searching I came across this Golf MK3 1.4 with around 84,000 miles on the clock for £750 I think it was.
Here are a few photos of when I got the car:

A few problems with it, firstly, a dent in the grill and smashed number plate where a previous owner had a bump in a car park and the engine was abit tappy if I'm honest.
Moving on, I drove it like this for several months right up until around March-April time before I did any work on it at all.
Had a small accident in the snow last year causing me to scuff the bumper slightly and this has been something I've been meaning to fix...for an entire year  though I have been putting it off because I want to smooth the front bumper and I'm going to repair the scuffs at the same time.
Since I've owned the car, mechanically it's had:
- Set of new cam followers (tappets)
- Brand new oil pump
- New cam belt and tesioner (more on this further down)
- Full service (plugs, air filter, oil filter etc)
- Wheels re-tracked and new CV gaitor fitted
- New CV joint fitted
- New brake pads
Off the top of my head that is all I can think of, but mechics alone I've spent at least £700 on it. I may aswell just get rid!
Debadged Grill, MK4 Style Lights and smoked side repeaters
My original plan was to change the damaged grill on the Golf to a GTI/VR grill that has the two slats rather than the CL grill which has three but while browsing the forum during early 2011 I found someone selling a debadge brand new grill for something pretty cheap like £20 so I snapped it up!
At the same time, I saw some brand new smoked side repeaters on here for £7 delivered! Because I loved the look of the MK4 I thought about changing the headlights to the chrome MK4 style ones so I picked these up on eBay for £50.

Indicators/Fogs/Blanking Plates, new plates and VR6 Splitter
When the previous owner bumped the car in a car park I presumed they must have caught the front blanking plates because they were all chipped and one had a slight crack in. I brought some clear indicators from a GTI model on eBay and after a day or so of having those on I tinted them black. (A bit too much to be fair but I've not had any trouble with the law about these)
At this point, I decided to chuck on some new number plates because the old ones were very dirty and the front was cracked!
I hated the CL,GTI splitter on the mk3 and after seeing some VR splitters around I browsed the classifieds for one and thankfully a real one cropped up! Due to it being slightly scuffed underneath I got it fairly cheap aswell!

Crystal Rear Lights, stickers and rear black VW badge
I didn't like the look of the pov spec CL lights, so I changed them to a set of crystals. I'd always been on the look out for a set but they were really expensive new and I didn't fancy paying the money for them! Picked these up for £15 on eBay, love those bargins
Must admit, now though I really dislike them and I'm thinking about change.
I brought this sticker set for <£10 and chucked those on the rear window while I was at it. I have painted the rear VW badge matt black though I took this picture before doing that :embarassed:
New radiator
Picked my girlfriend (now ex) up from work one day and road workmen had decided to leave piles of grit and stones all over the road so when I was driving down the road on the way back a stone must have flicked up from car in front or something and hit my radiator causing it to leak everywhere when I got home and turned the car off. A trip to GSF and the help of my grandad this was soon resolved!
Cambelt scare
I didn't bother changing the cam belt when I first got it, foolish I know. After changing the tappets at my dads garage I drove it to Alton Towers which takes about an hour from where I am. On the way back, I was pushing it to see what speed I could get out of it and I managed 102mph roughly
Suddenly, at a round about I hear clunking in the engine bay and rattles. Obviously, I paniced like hell and found a petrol station to pull over in on the A50 and had a quick look round. Didn't really find anything until I got home and took the cambelt cover off!
A nut inside the casing had managed to come lose and fall onto the belt then got lodged in the casing at the bottom where it slowly wore away the belt! That could have been a huge problem if the belt went! :undecided:
What else have I done?
I don't have pictures of the bits and bobs I've done but I've:
- Cleaned and sprayed the steelies matt black
- Fitted a twin pipe back box exhaust with new exhaust pipe
- Fitted a new glove box handle and changed the fuses to make my electrics work
- Changed various oil pressure sensors in order to stop the oil light coming on!
The major exterior mods I've done, and I will get pictures of as soon as possible are vinly wrapping my wing mirrors and fuel filler flap with rat look sticker bombing which personally I think looks awesome!
What's to come:
- Lowering the car (in the near future)
- Alloys, thinking OEM bottletops
- Up to date pictures of the mirrors and fuel flap
- Modding the dash with new leds and coloured needles
- Smoothed front bumper and repair it, vents in the bottom
- Rear tinted red lights Euro style!
- Oil pressure gauge
- Colour coded VR6 highline side trim (Has been ordered)
- Vento Front end with early grill if I find one
That's all I can think of right now, so any suggestions or comments are more than welcome!
Heres a picture of the front end after it had just been washed and I cleaned the engine bay/under bonnet area (not showing off my tiny engine )

Good work so far, but not a fan of the headlights, sorry! Spray up the bottom of your grille and it will look much better.

Thanks! Yeah personally I love the lights! Looking into getting a vento front end so will look better once those are on I suppose
Yeah when I spray my new highline side trim I'll chuck some paint on bottom of the grill!

Good work so far man! Keep it up :)

Good little project, keep at it :afro:

Thats a massive improvement from how it was originally, looks pretty clean alround really

I reckon you should joey mod those headlights, they would look awesome black :)

Whilst out in a village in Nottingham for my relatives Christmas party on boxing day, some little *insert abuse here* decided to key all down the drivers side of my car! There are a few areas on the car that need respraying, the bonnet and the roof being the key areas but that's not the point :embarassed:

Tossers...
Sorry to hear that - same thing happened to my lads MK2 pre-Christmas...
-
Just brought some alloys for it! Finally  They are 15" 'BBS' style  Though I'm sure they'll look awesome once fitted.
Need to pick up 2x 15" tyres when I get paid though if you are selling a full set of 15" tyres cheap hit me with a PM
I will be repainting them possibly with white spokes and then trying to polish the lip. Something Like that  Suggestions welcome though!
Should be getting these around Monday next week so I'll get better pictures of them and obviously as I refurb them.
-
yeah theyll look nice bud, lip should polish up good
-
I reckon those wheels will look nice once they have had a refirb man :) what width are the wheels and tires? If they are 7's then it looks like you have some 205's on there! You should go for some 195/45/15's instead :)
-

Yeah the current tyres are "7x15 and the two tyres are 205 50 15."
-
as above i would go 195 with the smallest profile you can, makes the wheels stand out more and looks far better

What difference will it make? Sorry to sound stupid! :embarassed:
-
because the tyre is narrower it wont overhang the alloy, making it look better as its not over shadowed by the tyre. (which looks poo imo. like the picture above with 205 tyres on, tyres are bigger than the alloy)
smaller profile means when looking at it face on your looking at the alloy and not the massive amount of tyre. make sense? ill try find some pictures t explain better lol
-
Remember that if you start changing side profile's it will alter your speedo reading... There is a chart (do a google search) and it'll show you by how much out it will be...
-
as above, checl that. are mk3 speedos able to be re-calibrated ?
and as for tyres, difference between the tyre size you posted in your picture and thesehttp://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/darkartist1989/Mk3%20Golf/3728742785_61a0ae1abf_o.jpg
granted these alloys might be bigger but that the difference in look it will give you
-
The difference between 195 & 205 on a mk3 speedo is negligible. 195's are cheaper and look better, plus I found mine drove better on them.
Some Gti's were fitted with 195s from the factory. It's an all round better choice
-
I don't fancy my speedo being out even if it is only slightly
-
alloys of that sort of design should always have tyres that are thinner to enfasize there design. and smaller profiles too :)
so 195/ 45 or less is what you want. cheaper tyres too as said above
as for the speedo, what where the original size alloys and tyres ?

Well I currently have 13" steelies with....something small on them. Cant remember off hand.

It'll be out anyway, check it against a sat nav. 195/45/15 is a standard tyre size & will not affect the speedo.
-
does it have huge chunky profile tyres on it ? if not then anything you put on will put it out lol, difference between 40 & 45 profile on 195s will be nothing in comparison to going from 13s to 15s
do the speedo calculator thing as suggested ( either google it or its a sticky on here somewhere) would of thought the speedo is able to be re calibrated anyway, wouldn't cost much

Check the manual for original size and do a comparison on here anything around 3% difference is OK.... http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator
Even changing the width changes the overall rolling size of the wheel... Like most I thought it didn't matter but it does...

I think my original tyre size was this for my 13". If so this doesn't seem so bad?

mate thats more than fine lol. mines further out than that, if it makes less than 2/3 mph difference then it dont matter at all tbh

That's Spot On M8!!!

I had the nasty 13" steelies on my CL, they had 175/70/13's on them and I changed them to my RX's which are 195/45/16's and they have little affect on the speedo (just checked it now - 1.2% greater it says)
Go on: http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator (Dom reccommended it to me a while back - seems to be reliable also ) May aswell get a second opinion.
I thing the ratio for your steely's tyres is 70 though

Just used that one and set the steels to 70 and it says the difference is 3.3% not bad? :)

My speedometer was more accurate and the car drove better when I went from 13 to 195 on 15's. :)

VR6 Highline Colour coded trim
These arrived in the post this morning!
Gonna need some work before they go on the car, sanding and spraying them red. Overall, I'm happy with them to say I paid £30 shipped

Picked up some paints for the rub strips and the wheels today! Will update on those once they are painted
Also, got these in the post today!

Not sure about them though :undecided: I'll see once they're on

I would. Speedo is less then 10% out now which is a good thing.

Yeah the wheels are coming on Monday and they need to be cleaned up etc  Then I need to source some rubber aha so could be a while yet :undecided:

Today I actually made some progress!
Finally got round to painting the rub strips which I am pretty happy with how they came out! (sorry for the low quality pictures Blackberry camera :embarassed:) anyhow, While I was sanding these down I discovered that before they were black they were burgundy!
This took a big portion of my day to be honest because I was doing them one at a time rather than the whole set at once if you get me
Had a slight trauma when I went to get the sandpaper, parked in mcdonalds car park talking to my friend who was getting in the passenger side and I managed to bend my car key so badly in the door lock that I spent 15mintues trying to get it back out again! Then couldn't start the car so had to walk to Halfords and begged them for tools and when I showed them the key they just had a fit on the floor in laughter!

Pretty impressed with these to be honest and will be doing the clear coat tomorrow then hopefully getting them on the car this week!
My wheels turned up today but I didn't have much time to do anything with them sadly so just dumped them into my bedroom

Wheels look cool! You should polish the lips and colour code the centres :) good work on the side mouldings! How come you are waiting so long before lacquering them?

It started to get dark as I was finishing the painting  So I thought it was best just to wait until tomorrow so I don't go messing it up  I was gonna polish the lips and have white centers though I have considered red. Never polished before but I'm sure there are guides on the internet and I'm going to buy better centre caps for them!
-
Might have to go off the idea of polishing the rims and painting them white spokes :embarassed: I've spent at least 3 hours on the polished part today sanding it down with different grades and it's just not getting anywhere! and I've got another three to do so I might just paint the lip white and the spokes red!
Any other suggestions?
-
Put in the man hours and polish them!! It's a lot of work but it will be worth it in the end :) What grade paper are you using to do it?

After reading a few tutorials online I'm using wet and dry 240, 400, 600, 1200 and 2000
-
Umm, jack your car up and put it in gear so the wheel spins it'll speed the process up. But white lips also work, don't alwayS have to have em polished
-
Decided to give the polishing another go. Only did the lip and then painted the full center white! I must say, once I polished the lip I was so impressed with how it came out  Looks stunning though the pictures don't give it justice because my camera phone is sh!t Still needs slightly touching up to be honest but here is some progress.

Obviously, the center cap isn't going to be like that. I might change them to some better BBS centers or paint these white and then get red BBS stickers ()
ONLY thing really bothering me is when I polished the lip I was so excited I did it all in one go and then decided to paint the center as well to finish one off! The masking I did to keep the lip free from paint so my hard work wasn't ruined wasn't very tight to the center on the lip if you get me. So that didn't come out great :embarassed: Gonna have to touch that up tomorrow somehow!
What do you think? :nerd:
-
Good job!!!! Like these wheels alot. White centre caps I reckon with red stickers sounds good. Can you get different centre caps for them (smoother ones), not sure about all them little circles around the edge... :undecided:

Thanks! I was gonna go for this type of cap which does fit these wheels

I don't like the current caps at all to be honest.

Perfect!!!!!
-
They're gonna look Sooo much better when they're all done man! I think you should leave more of the lip polished though, there looks like there is too much centre at the moment! Keep it up :)

Yeah I've sanded down some more of the lip so just the spokes are painted like they should be. Gonna be awesome when they're finished just very time consuming  My fingers are already feeling the pain of sanding
-
Check my thread and you'll see I know exactly what you mean lol! I look forward to the finished result :)

A recent picture. Sorry for the quality was taken on my Blackberry
The new wheels that I'm refurbing will finish this car off nicely and I still need to get my VR colour coded trim on the sides (It's been a busy few days)
Took this after I fitted my forum stickers to the rear windows and the tax disc holder
-
Today I decided to finish off my VR side trim, so I got the clear coat done and I'm just waiting for those to dry off and for new clips to arrive before putting those on!
Decided to get the debadged grill painted as well, pretty pleased with the result though because I've been used to the grill being black for the last 9 months it looks odd to me :undecided:

Hope you like it
I purchased some new center caps for the wheels last night off eBay and a circular cutting tool so I can cut a perfect circle to help mask the wheels up which should be coming some time this week hopefully, then I can actually get on with the wheels!

Thanks  I'm gonna get the wheels done first, don't want to take on too much and end up not finishing things I've started
 Fair enough.

Wheels
Today has been a bad day for me really. I've been waiting for this plaster board cutter tool to arrive, basically a big drawing compass with a circular blade on to cut rather than draw. My intentions were to cut 2 circles out of paper/card or something similar and make a thin circle to go round the lip of the wheel I was painting exposing the center spokes but then I would mask the rest up with newspaper.
I was hoping the tool would allow me to cut a perfectly round circle though this wasn't the case as the blade was just too dull and it was tearing the cardboard box I was using and then the same happened when I used poster card and paper :undecided:
This is sort of what I'm trying to do so you can the idea. (Ignore the bad circle this was a practice with thin paper but you get the idea of what I'm doing)

Mask off the lip with the circle and then use newspaper for the rest of the lip so when I paint and remove it all the spokes are painted more or less in a perfect circle and the polished lip remains , sadly proving to be a big hassle and I'm considering going all one colour on these wheels now OR completely polished though I'm not sure on this one yet
VR6 Side trim
I finally got round to clear coating the side trim and it's ready to go on though some IDIOT has glued my old side trim on... so I've got blobs of glue down the side of my car and 90% of the clips have broken, so I've brought a pack of short and long clips off eBay and will continue with that tomorrow  Will I be alright to add a blob of no more nails to help keep them on? Because some of the strips didn't stay in place hence the masking tape on one side.

Red Rear Lights
Decided to give tinting the rear lights a go today so gave them a thin coat, covering up the reverse light (which doesn't work anyway) and slightly tinting the indicator. It looks much darker in the images I'll get a better image of them on the car tomorrow in day light hopefully. I think the indicators will be alright but I'll test them on the car tomorrow because if they're not orange it'll have to come off

That's all for today!

Any way of sharpening the blade on that cutter?

That would be the best solution I spose and some thinner card to cut the circles on  Not sure how you even sharpen a blade to be honest. *google*

Just stop being lazy and take the time to mask it properly!

  I want it to be 'perfect' and in the attempts I've made it's not been to the standard I want it at all

Last picture didn't come out too well but I think they're going to look spot on
Slightly annoyed that a previous owner of these wheels has, by the looks of things, grinded off the fake nuts and flattened them down. Now they just look like they are even more of a lookalike cheapo
-
Drill them out, re tap them and then put real bolts in, would take ages but look a lot better!

That's something I did think about actually it's something that would be done in the future. I'm happy enough with them as they are right now, just want them finished

As far as finding centre caps go, what size do they need to be? I have a set of Audi centre caps that go with my lenzos that look like they could work :) give yours a measure and I'll get back to you with a partcode :)

They need to be 6" in diameter and the clips on the back need to be about 3" roughly  PM me some pictures or something if you have any and if they look like they could work I'll take 'em

I'm selling mine with my old wheels, I'll get you the part code though, I think they are about the right size :)
