About me: car: 1.8 GTI MK2 16V, 22 male, 5 years NCD never had any penalties, asked for fully comp insurance in a reasonable town area. Dearest was the not very aptly named "Budget" car insuarnce £4900 TFT or £5800 fully comp with a £500 excess. Bonkers  Dont forget their slogan, "Smart people BUDGET!!!!!! " I must be dumb cos i didnt budget  elephant.co.uk.  was best £660 and £300 excess and this includes NCD protection.
-
Am I reading this right ?? Fecking hell ....
-
£660 sounds a bit better huh!?
-
Try Liverpool Victoria. Yep, they seem to specialise in the over 70's but they beat any other quote my wife could get on the 'Dub...... Was much cheaper than putting it on as a second car on my policy, even with my 7yrs NCD etc, etc. Came in at £420 fully comp inc business use, and she only has 3 yrs NCD. Bargain.
BTW- Mate of mine used to be a broker, and advised very strongly against the likes of Elephant. Steer very clear of their "bonus accelerator" offer, and even their full policies are not as watertight as they should be, allegedly......

I was with Elephant, and came up for renewal so started shopping around.
Bell direct offerend me a 12 month (as opposed to the 10 elephant were offering) with my missus (20 and driving 3 months) with all mods (LPG conversion) for 30 quid less.
Oh, and they are both the same company with the smae underwriters! barmy!
-
Ive got a slight dilema. My insurance is due for renewal in a month or so. I usually go with adrian flux as there good for mods. I thinks it cost aroung the £750 mark last year with 5 years no claims, no points and 23yr old male.
But this year the missus has just passed her test. She is 22 and a new driver. Im gonna get her a little 1 litre micra or something.
How should i do the insurance for us both?
Should i put her on my insurance - will this bring the cost down?
Should i get her, her own policy and have myself as a named driver on the policy?
What works out best? Ive only ever had to insure myself so am a bit confused now.
-
i'd advise her to get her own insurance to biuld up her ncb. it'll sting a bit the fisrt year, about £700-£800 for a 1.0 micra but it'll be about a 3rd of that next time. My girlfriend has one and is just up for renewal .after one year as a new 26 yr old driver hers has dropped from £786 tpft to £363 fc. if you put yourself as named on her policy it'll be about an extra £40
-
Will it be cheaper for me if i add her to my policy?
-
i couldn't really say, but her being a new driver, i doubt it. Best get in touch with your broker.
-
no, i was on my mums policy and it added 46 quid a month to her premium matey!!
-
Im payin £870 for the year! mk1golf gti 1.8, 22 yrs old (no years no claims though) that was the cheapest i found with admiral. The word 'joke' springs to mind.
-
tbh mate, in this day and age thats not bad for a 22 yr old in such a quick car.
-
Ive just done a test quote with admiral.
For me and the wife fully comp its 623.70
For me only its 703
seems daft to me but if its cheaper with her on then thats the way i will do it. Im not gonna tell her cos i dont want her driving the golf!
After doing a few quotes with other companies it looks like im gonna be paying around the £620 mark this year, so i will wait and see what my renew quote is and go from there.
-
Yeh i forgot to add mine was 3rd party fire n theft.
-
sucks but still pretty cheap. my girlfriend is 26 and drives a 1.0 micra (group3) and hers was £736 for tpft last year. Unfortunatley you sit right in the middle of the most at risk bracket (18 - 25 year old male). 1 yr ncb should see you get about 30% off next time, plus a bit for more experience and age.

I get the impression that experiences vary. Elephant and Diamond are the same company (I think) and my wife had all sorts of problems with the latter. Could also be a bit of a postcode lottery? Age makes such a difference. At 22 Admiral was unbeatable (same broker mate couldn't get to within £70 of their quote) yet now I'm over 30 esure are tops. Was with Direct line inbetween. YOu can tell I'm into long term brand loyalty.....!

I was going to go with admiral but they wanted to add £150 for 2 non fault claims in 3 years. I'm gonna stick with privilege again (7th year) cos they don't load for accidents that aren't your fault and they're pretty reasonable if you need to claim. I live right in Sheffield city centre and park on the road, got cat 2, am 33 and have 7 yrs ncb. £407 fully comp (protected) on an 8v 95.

Seems pretty good for your area, tbh. Better the devil you know.....

well i'm with HIC who some people seem to think are pretty bad whenit comes to claims, but they offer like for like replacement on parts and with all my mods listed and as long as i don't go over 10k a year its £320 for me, 28, no points, however many no-claims since i was 17 (there is a limit right?) parked on the road with a cat1 alarm imobiliser

You've done well to be living in your area with no points- speed camera city along the A27! Nearly missed the limit in the roadworks on my way to GSF last weekend!!

thats another thing , NCB. some companys will let you claim upto 9 years and 70% discount. mine only go up to 5 . it's a strange business
in fact, i'll tell you a story.
I used to work for a NU subsiduary in the household section and was offered redundancy or a move to NU proper in their motor section. After a few days training (BORING!) we were shown how to do quotes. The first thing they said was to ask how much the customers best quote was and no matter what our cheapest was ,we were only allowed to offer the closest lower quote, sometimes ripping people off for hundreds. I was so disgusted I took redundancy instead.

Direct Line refused to match another quote at renewal time, despite the fact I had been with them for three years. "We don't match quotes, sir". Lost my business for the sake of £60. Hmmmm, quote me happy......

well first time on the forum all seems good. Just passed my test back in Feb as i was made redundant and paid off so had a small
crisis and bought my dream car mk2 8v . What a car but some ridiculous quotes of £2000 + fully comp. Went to Admiral and paid £650 fully comp with no NCB couldn't believe it, okay im approaching the big 30 but still not bad.
