Title: French Reliability
Post by: Milby on 25 November 2011, 13:16
(http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/Milby3183/909859.jpg)

Been driving the above car for last few days as it's my Dad's Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and he's away so thought I would see what it's like :) quite poky for a MPV has 1.6 diesel in it :) drove it too work first day and the engine just stopped and came up on dashboard saying parking brake faulty :S as it has a electric handbrake so I thought OK stopped checked it was working and it was and then restarted and kept going .... was driving home and it juddered to a halt again this time saying anti-pollution failure and didn't let me restart engine for few mins then was working fine again.
Spoke to my Dad about it he said it happens all the time been to garage several times but never been fixed and they don't know what's wrong with it.
Drove next day this time it stopped and it just said STOP on dash so i stopped and the  it worked fine :S

I think it just likes to turn off engine then randomly show a fault :L

Stupid french peice of crap :L the only good thing on it is the cruise control ;)

Went to look at a VTR version as a replacement for the Sharan, Spec wise and what you can get is good for the money sounds good on paper but

it really felt like a bunch of blind monkeys built it, its no wonder they're cheap!

this one is vtr+ and yeh there's a lot inside it :) but even the dash buttons have worn off to white plastic and it only a few years old :L

Yup, we looked at an 08 plate and it was the same, even the top dash storage compartment lids were loose and made of the thinnest possible plastic  I know why the mpg figure is meant to be so high... 'cos it'll spend most of it's time out and about on the back of a flat bed

yeh or just refusing to use it's engine  the  mpg computer is rubbish as well it goes down it huge jumps goes from like 50 to 20 to zero in a few mins then up then back down

I used to have a C2 vts.. considering it was less than a year old to my surprise it decided to turn itself off whilst I was driving down a dual carriageway. Good job too as when I opened the bonnet the engine was on fire!

tbh I dont even know why I opened the bonnet.. just seemed like the normal thing to do. I soon closed it which thankfully seemed to put the fire out  :lipsrsealed:

I've had French, which was trouble free actually.

I should make a thread about German reliability, and loads of people can join in, as the Golfs aren't without problems.

Stupid German peice of crap.

That's any German car. I've seen plenty of new BMW's and Mercs on tow trucks, not being delivered either!

Unless you live near a garage for merc and bmw i doubt you have seen 'plenty'

I agree though german is not the greatest. Jap is far superior, even then it still goes wrong.

I drive almost every day, so I've seen plenty, just seem to see them. You can't doubt it, you're not looking through my eyes.

Jap cars go wong!

Probably not really the most reliable car. More than likely statisitically in percentage, but there were far fewer of them to make a representitave comparison.

I had a 307 and it was the worst car I've owned! Only had it 6 months befor I fecked it off, but in that time, the heater just packed in (middle of winter too!), alternator went, and it kept cutting out at idle. Px'd it for a mk5 2.0 TDI. Much better!

had a 1997 saxo diesel for 13 years and it was brilliant. No rust, very few problems (dead battery, leaky radiator and had to replace the glow plugs are the only big faults). Loved that little car.

Friends of mine have had French cars and it's put me off for life.

Pug 306 Diesel sedan - Intercooler issues, idling issues, rear suspension collapsed.

Xantia 2litre with active suspension - clutch cable snapped and they had to take half the car apart to fix it.

Xantia 1.9 Diesel - clutch issues (twice), wheel bearings

Xantia 2.1 diesel - cambelt snapped = mess!

Clio 1.4 Auto - headlights packed up several times, radiator issues, locking problems.

I appreciate that these are a lot older cars (most happened about 8-10 years ago but it was enough to stop most of them buying another French car! I will never knowingly buy a French car

I had a V40 1.9TD for 5 years from new (1999-2004) loved it, It loved the outside lane of motorways. Everyone just moved out of my way, It looked like an unmarked police car . Had extra aerial fitted on the roof for work.

Done 125k miles in it never had a spanner to the engine, apart from oil filter changes.

And It was the one with the renault derv engine fitted

Ive had a few Volvo's, at 21 i had a 240 GLT it cost me sod all to insure and was faster than my mates Nova's and XR3's :lipsrsealed: The V6 Volvos had a French Engine which was piss poor in comparison to the ford derived 4 cylinder, the 2.3 turbo lump from the 760 drops in to a 240 with ease making a real high speed barge

Yeah I hate to say it the 240GL gave me fond memories it was one of the first cars I serviced for the old man, he taught me everything about it " Look at the engine nothing to go wrong and built like a brick shi*t house!"
He spent about 15K on it Pioneer 8 speaker sound system, private plate B8888 fully loaded and in the best colour dark Monza blue equivalant! He wanted the 760-740 afterwards!
