So, go on then, got my moneys back from the Garage so now have circa £3k to spend on a new car for my missus, she likes the following cars...
Chrysler PT Cruisers
Golf Cabs
New Beetles
Obviously i know the VAG stuff but has anyone got experience with the PT cruisers?
an any other suggestions?
-
I would stick with VAG.
-
pt cruisers look awful lol
-
PT Cruiser and Barge pole go together!
What about a Mini? can be had for that sort of money these days...
Couldn't recommend a VAG car for that sort of money, not reliable enough.... awaits incoming!
Thom

Mechanicaly awful, Build quality is awful, wide birth required
-
PT Cruisers are awful, the engines are crap and the MPG is diabolical. It also WON'T STOP FLIPPING BEEPING just because you putthe ignition on. Yes I KNOW I put the ignition on, I just turned the key you dick!
-
Wouldn't go near the PT cruiser. The looks are ok IMO but engine wise and build wise... well, there not good.
-
Pt cruiser. I Would get another scenic

I think that depends on the life the car has had my mk4 is probably only worth about that now but had it since it was 2/3 years old. I never really have any problems, i have never broken down or had any serious problems with it in the 5 years i have owned it.
I think if you service them every 10k fix anything that breaks straight away they will go on for ever  same goes for the g/f's Polo never needs more than standard service parts and we have that for 3 years.

Yeah, the looks are marmite, but Iike em as does she, but with them being such an odd ball I've never really heard about reliability .
But sounds like they're not great so that's that off the list
-
you need to speak to Simon Lear about PT Cruisers mate... his is/was always playing up
how about an R32... oh.. hold on :lipsrsealed:
-
Yeah, less said about R32 the better!
Purely from my selfish point of view, but she's right, I've got my mk2, and I'd only do something stupid to an R like charge it
-
I'd persuade her to have the current Beetle.
-
Saab 9-3 1.8t vector sport. I've banged on about this before, but I absolutely loved that car when I had it. Not the cheapest to run, but the 1.9 tid is reasonable if you want economy, and you wont have to add much more to your budget for one.

Yeah i like saabs, but my stepmums old convertable had an epic suspension fail which proved very costly, kind of put me off them!

Audi A3 1.9tdi?
Yeah im liking Audi at the mo, been driving the outlaws A4 1.9tdi avant for the last 1000 miles, really comfortable car to drive, an the economys awesome.
Used half a tank back from Dumfries to newbury and not at 70 either.

Here be a curveball....... Kia Sedona?
-
Knock the PT Cruiser in the head.My sister had one for a year and she was always bringing it round with electrical gremlins. The economy was pants even with the cdi engine.
She decided to never buy another Chrysler that was built for the uk market! She now drives a 300c :undecided: although to be fair its a nice motor
My missus wanted a Beetle and they are pretty cheap atm,the only reason i didnt get one for her is because i will have to drive it every now and again so i decided to tell her they were unreliable and bits fell off them all the time :lipsrsealed:

Well I must have had a gud un then! Honestly couldnt fault it. The Mk1 was based on the Vectra yes, but the Mk2 onwards were seperate entities. On par with 3 series bimmer and C class merc imo, but much more understated and without a stupidly exagerated price tag.
Sorry to jump in on the thread, but Kia - Really! I could see where this was gonna lead!
I take it she wants a people carrier type piece of sh!te then?

She clearly needs adjusting. What's not to like?
Skoda Octavia 1.8T 4x4 estate? You'd get a pretty good one for £3k.

All being considered!
-

MG ZS 180!
Fantastic cars, very underrated and cheap to buy.

Head gasket + cambelt + waterpump - £325 to fix. Cheaper than replacing a cambelt on most motors.
I have found my MG to be super reliable, cant fault it for the money you buy em for. I think the reputation they have with some people is unfair.
Mention an MG or Rover and people go 'ooh head gasket' like its the end of the world but if you get it fixed and uprated and then keep an eye on your levels as you should with any car then it wont happen again!
-
PT cruisers are terrible cars and parts are exspensive
-
Oh I have seperate funds for camper, golf an girlfriends car!
I'd love a ZS180 saloon, always liked them since I worked at MG
-
gotta say jord your lasses car choice and frequency of change is on a par with you

Focus estate?
big boot, sensible TDCI engine range, good fuel economy, roomy
Get...... Out !!
-
Ford are crap at making Diesel engines though. :lipsrsealed:
-
Why?
Terrible economy for one - Focus my parents had as a rental on holiday couldn't make 40MPG on light driving!
Cheap, cheap parts, easy to work on (from what i have done to my mums)
No and I doubt it. Parts I've bought for Fords have been horrendously expensive!
-
Sold my focus zetec to my sister in march. I hated the car almost as much as I hated the 307 I had. I feel guilty though cos she has had nothing but problems with it. Her fiance is a bit of a chopper and thinks hes a know it all as well, so he has bodged things and made it worse. So far spent over 1k on garage bills to get it all sorted (warped disks, coil packs, HT leads, windscreen etc etc)

This.
Infact I'm not too sure what engines Ford have made that are great really....
The cars themselves aren't bad. The 1l Fiesta Courtesy cars are nice little cars, handle and drive nice but the engine is just crap really. Fairly nippy but crap on fuel and crap if you're in the wrong gear......
HT leads last all of ten miles too.
Focus 1.6's are just crap on fuel. Diesels are jus crap on fuel.
Plus you can put your foot down in the new Focus and count to ten before the ECU has even decided whether to open the throttle or not.

Nat's Focus estate is a great workhorse, tatty as hell but then with a 7 year old climbing all over it with sticky snotty fingers writing 'i hate poo' on the drivers door etc we don't get that precious about it... its only a 1.6 petrol so it is slow... and very very dull... but it does what it was built to do, they aren't for everyone though
-
Infact I'm not too sure what engines Ford have made that are great really....
Errr the Pinto, the Crossflow, the Zeta and the Duratec which have powered generations of Se7en-type cars.
Oh and the YB Cosworth unit.
Clearly a complete dearth of great engines.

Piss off an stop jacking the thread

Going to be sensible and suggest an Avensis diesel :lipsrsealed:
The 57 pool Avensis at work is so boring to drive, flat, bland, plastic everything etc etc.
But compared to the other pool cars it is bomb proof, never lets you down good on fuel and very comfortable
I take it over the insignia and 320d every time as both of them give me back ache and are not as smooth over a range of driving terrain types.
