Hello. I hope someone can help me please...
I just bought a 2002 2.0 gti golf. When I'm changing gear or when I rev the engine, it takes a couple of seconds for the revs to drop. I'm new to golfs but this car doesn't seem to have the power I'd expect it to have. Any ideas what I could do? Maybe this is normal?

2.0 golfs are known to be slow, 1.8t is the better option :)

unfortunatly the 2.0 gti 8v are not powerfull at all, there 115 bhp standard
and as the above poster said the 1.8 20v turbo is the better option which is 150 bhp standard

Thanks for your comments. In a way, I'm glad for the peace of mind that if it's going slow, it's supposed to be that way! Just wish I'd known a bit more about Golf's before I bought this one. At least I'll know for next time!

Why do they put a gti badge on the 2.0 if its slow :undecided: . Does the non turbo 1.8 have gti on the back ,and what bhp is that, 110 :grin:

1.8 non-turbo is 125bhp :wink:

Doesn't need to be fast to be a GTi.
It just needs to be capable of Grand Touring, which it is and be injected, also which it is.

agreed not as if it has an r badge on it :grin:
i had one and was a nice step up from a 1.3s clio lol. But once i stepped up to a turbo i can see why ppl slate them for speed but tbh not sure if that car and engine was ever built for speed? Thats y they had 1.8T gti? :smiley:

With regards to your revving when changing gear issue, mine also does this, however it is fitted with a G60/VR6 flywheel/clutch setup. I have read that this can cause the 'over-revving' :wink:

The 125bhp 1.8 is nothing to shout about either :grin: but I've just come from a 230bhp vrs and a 150bhp 340 turbo Volvo that weighed as much as a empty crisp packet :cool:
It's enough for our lass tho as it's her car and I only use it now and again until I find another drifter.

I can only imagine how bad the 2.0 gti is as when i got my 1.8t i was gutted :sick:,the lack of power was gutting compared to the renault 5 or any other turbo car ive had to be fair.The fun factor was zero,i think there more of a nice drive rather than a thrill :undecided: i should have got a mondeo :laugh: :laugh:

It is and its still like driving a rocking chair.Im that fed up with the drive ive put it up for sale.im at sunny edlo.

I agree. Nice car to drive...comfortable even! But I was hoping for something with a little but more of a kick when I press the throttle! This Golf is perfect for Sunday drivers! Still...much better than my last one anyway and I don't have to keep it forever! Thanks for all your comments so far

I must admit i do love the drive and look of the car its just gutless and too predictable.I keep looking for another pocket rocket for a bit of excitement though.

Who mapped yours? Mine is mapped and is far from gutless :evil:

Mine is better now its mapped but compared to todays power the golf 1.8t is still low in bhp but I don't care as they say once u got the bug u stick to a dub :laugh: :laugh:

Does this just apply to the Mk4 ? If not then there has to be something wrong with it because i have a mk5 gti 2.0 an its anything but slow off the mark ??? Pins my passengers to the seat when required haha

The Mk4 2.0 is n/a yours isn't, yours is a completely different engine and has a turbo bolted on :wink:

ah ok well that explains it then, glad i got the mk5 cos i was gonna get the mk4 as i had the TDi an loved it, i would never have known it wasnt that good !!

Was the best i test drove out of about 30 mk4s but its just not what im used to.

The over-revving when you schange gear is most likely the camshaft position indicator. Cheap replacement (£15 on ebay) and ten minutes to fit.

or clutch switch...
don't second guess, get it scanned to see what's been logged

could also be a maf? Clean it out along with the throttle body to find out.
