Title: linkage advice
Post by: 01664gti on 21 November 2011, 13:14
I have just purchased a 91 mk2 16v,Although im very happy with it the gear selection is horrendous.I have had a look this morning and the cup and ball at the end of the gearstick is fine,Its the other end which is the problem.

I have noticed that where the long rod comes through from the gearstick to the front there should be a bush which sits round the rod.It is not there so the rod is just flopping around in the mount.

Secondly further up the linkage there is like an upside down L shape which should have a ball on it(relay shaft).Well the balls not there either lol.

Can anyone recommend to me what i need to get to replace the bush and ball/relay shaft or maybe where to order them from online.

I fitted a kit to my valver a couple of weeks ago. Bought it off eBay for a tenner or so, along with a weighted shift rod from a MK3. Make sure the kit you order has the big orange bush for the relay shaft, as not all of them do.

I was just going to post that the only thing not included in your link was the relay shaft bush!

I fitted the b&b kit today,It was easier than i imagined and only took about 20-30mins.The gear selection feels much more positive now but it got dark and i had to leave the actual setting up of the gearstick with the tool thingy bob.

All being well it'll be one step nearer to actually being on the road lol

you dont need the alignment tool. Just need someone to hold the gearstick dead centre then tighten the adjustment bolt.

Or just do it yourself with trial and error, knocking it over a gnats cock at a time

The tool can be bought cheap from ebay or use an audio cassette (remember them?) held in the gap between the reverse gate & lockout lever.

Well i used the magic tool today and the gear selection feels great and i can now push it towards first and realease the clutch without cringing lol.

I will be adding the bomb looking wieghty things as soon as i can locate one as it seems like a worthy mod

If you stick with the standard rods and have a weighed shift you will notice the difference.  Replacing the whole lot with upgraded links not as much.

I fitted a weighted rod along with the bush kit and it's well worth it. Think I paid a tenner for mine because I had the bush kit sitting in the garage waiting to go on the car, and saw one on eBay on a BIN. I'm sure you could haggle with a scrapper for a few quid less, but for £10 I can't think of much that makes driving the car more enjoyable pound-for-pound.
