Those two don't normally go together.

Small engined mk2 would probably be the most fun, as they weigh so little.

No idea, insurance varies so much person to person. Older cars can be expensive though due to lack of security features.

Just do some searches on autotrader, then get some quotes on some comparison sites to give you an idea of what to expect.

Ok thanks. I heard that if a car is over 25 years of age it can get classic car insurance and its really cheap meaning I could get a mk2 gti cheaply. but its sounds a bit to good to be true.

I think you need to be at least 25 years old to get classic insurance.

Start with a Polo or if funds allow a Lupo

What about for insurance?

The way insurance is going you'll be lucky to insure most stuff for less than £2000. Plenty of people I know are paying over £3000 for cars that two/three years ago cost under £2000 to insure. Friend of mine is paying £2400 for a bog standard 1.4 Mk3 golf, he's just passed this last week so.

mental!!! I passed at 17 first car was a black 106 gti and payed £1100 for insurance. I did write it off in 5 weeks though
Then got a vts and it went down to 865
Sometimes it's good to be old  :lipsrsealed:

the 1.3 mk2 is a group 7 insurance that should be cheap. although i only pay 600 quid a year for mk3 gti and im 25 and i dont have any no claims bonus as its out of date
Title: Re: Whats the cheapest most fun golf for a 17 year old

I had a 1.6 MK3 as a first at 18 and had it lowered.

Was pretty fun, although I'm sure some sort of 1.4 106 would have been far more fun, I liked the solidity of the Golf.

Plus the 1.6 lump made it much faster then all my mates cars, all but one with a Mk4 2l GTI but even then I was off at the lights quicker.

Then you look back and laugh at yourself comparing who has the quickest tortoise.

Was fun though and even though it's a heavy car, lift off oversteer was always an option.

EXPENSIVE first cars to run though. A 1.3 auto Micra = £1500 saving a year.

When asking about classic insurance a few people said they was like 20 odd and had classic insurance, but for you to get a gti is no chance lol! Just get a any old run around for a year, the cheapest to insure, thats what i done then at 18 got my self a 180bhp a3 tqs  Insurance being £1800. but now with the increases I doubt I'd be ablwe to insure my mk2 gti when it's done unless I get it done on a classic policy

Just get a tiny 1l in something small, nothing you'll get now will be fast anyway lol

A Mini for the first year they are fun trust me
Once you have a no claims bonus under your belt then consider a Golf
This reminds me when the cars involved was a XR2 or an Orion LX I hear you say  :embarassed:

If your modding it then your insurance will be absurd. Get yourself the cheapest run around you can find for a few years, build up some no claims, gain some experience and then start looking at modifying a better car

Get a cheap run around like a micra or KA, build up your NCB for 2/3 years (hopefully) then get something awesome.
I'd rather you write off one of them then a nice VW (even mk3  )
You may feel a bit of a twit, but they do the job and as soon as you hit 20/21 insurance will be dirt cheap for you with some NCB and a bit of experience behind you.
Then you can get something awesome and be able to leave everyone your own age in the dust!

To be honest you want to get something ridiculously sh!te first, like Daewoo Kalos, Aveo, Citroen C1, Kia Picanto etc. because lets face it, they are still going to be expensive. Rack up some no claims bonus and then when you are 21ish you will probably be able to afford something nice.

I have a Mk2 Golf 1.3 and im paying over £2000 and I turn 21 next month. Most expensive thing ive ever owned is my insurance premium, second to that is my 500 quid Golf

You don't have to drive like an idiot to crash.
Lack of experience and inability to judge the retardness of other road users would be a main cause, I'd say.

Well im not going to drive like an idiot thats not me and I what to get my pass plus as well so that should help my driving.

nothing to do with driving like an idiot, i know people who drive like compleate dicks and i refuse to get in a car with them or drive in front or behind them if theres a few of us convoying somewere and they have never crashed, however i know people who drive sensibly who have crashed, i.e my dad rolled a car  7 times down a motorway and spent 2 nights in intensive care about 5 years ago, yet hes one of the most sensible drivers i know.
as said by mitching its other people and lack of experience leading to you geting in over your head that does the damage.

also ide look into the pass plus first, when i passed there was only about 10 companies that gave discount for pass pluss, all quoted me between 200-1k more than other companies, so ide of been paying for the pass pluss and wouldnt have even got any discount.

good luck with finding a car though

Those two don't normally go together.

Small engined mk2 would probably be the most fun, as they weigh so little.

They are not fun with a small engine. Seem to be too heavy for the 1.3

I'd say to mk2/mk3 polos

although my first real car (after a very short stint with an MG Metro) was a MK1 golf 1.3.. had loads of fun in that, quite old for a first car now though so be prepared to have to look after it if you can a) find one and b) afford one...

I paid £700 to insure my first car which was an Escort 1.1 it then dropped to its lowest at £300 two years ago on a 2.0 golf.
On the same car its now going up to £800 with no accidents or claims
I think most teenagers will be on the bus or mums taxi well into their twenties soon, as insurance costs spiral ever skywards

The mk4 is a lardy car and the 1.4 is a gutless engine. I've got a 1.8T which when in standard 150bhp form was fairly dull, also the standard handling is pretty woeful so I'd hate to feel a non-gti.

I'd have a Ford Ka for a bit of fun, cheap motoring. A nippy 1.3 engine, cheap tax & insurance, good on fuel and a hoot on backroads

A Mk2 GTD would be fun... However, you'd look like a fücking boss rolling into the school car park in a slammed B3 Passat TDi estate.

Look for mk3 TDI's maybe?

hi, i'm just about to get a mk2 golf for my girlfriend who is 17, all other cars i looked at were over £2000 for her to insure, but a 1.3 mk2 golf is £816 and a mk2 golf gti is just shy of a grand, was going to give her my rover 623 as that was even less and that had around 170 bhp but at 285000 miles it blew it's head gasket. insurance doesn't make sense, i'm 23 a mk3 golf gti is £900 for me to insure a bmw 316 is £1100 or i could have a mk3 golf with a mk4 r32 lump dropped in with a turbo conversion for £700, my insurance is now dearer for me than when i was 17 for the same cars. whatever you do get make sure you put an older driver (35+) as a named driver and tell them they are the main driver, i save £435 by doing that, insurance is a rip off so i don't mind doing something like that to bring the price down, (i've never crashed or made a claim but lost my no claims bonus as an idiot crashed off the road 20 foot onto my property when i was out, they then drove off and to their credit notified their insurance company but as it was only a 1.1 fiesta worth nothing i told them not to worry about it, but because they had told my insurance company i lost my no claims) they can't invalidate your insurance either as it's your policy and they have no way of checking, just make sure that the person you put as a named driver lives at the same address. also a company called insure the box might be worth a look sometimes they are upto £1000 cheaper they put a tracker in your car and limit your miles to 6000 per year if you need more you can buy them and the cost is determined by the way you drive, also if you drive sensibly you can earn 100 extra miles per month for free. normally they give a better price through moneysupermarket though

Sod that tracker thing! It would cost me about 1k per month! I dont drive at excessive speeds, but I sometimes accellerate hard as there are hills all over the place on the way to and from work. There are lights at the top and bottom of them too which makes it worse!

i agree that it is s**t but anything that keeps the insurance down for a 17 year old helps, they tried to charge me for miles that my mates were driving as they can't tell who's driving, i politely told them where to go (well come to think of it, it wan't that polite) and cancelled my policy. other cheap cars for my girlfriend to insure are, ford escort xr3i, ford capri i can't remember if they are a 2.8i or 2.9i but it's one of those, a porsche 924 and a renault clio 1.4 rt auto around 1994 so whatever mk that is i think it's a mk2. although a scooter or motorbike upto 125cc is £80-£140 depending how much the bike is worth.

Micra 1.3 (cheaper then the 1l) and 11 seconds to 60 which is nippy enough.
1.3 Ka, fun handling little car
106 1.1 or 1.4 nippy and fun.
306 1.9TD or 2.0 HDI is quick and CHEAP insurance!

Micra 1.3 (cheaper then the 1l) and 11 seconds to 60 which is nippy enough.
1.3 Ka, fun handling little car
106 1.1 or 1.4 nippy and fun.
306 1.9TD or 2.0 HDI is quick and CHEAP insurance!

Few years ago I had a punt on a 405 1.9 TDI when funds were really poor.  Car was ugly but top spec, cost nothing to buy, insure or run.  Was pretty nippy, engine was cracking and was cosy inside.  You could literally afford to throw it away if it let you down badly.

Eventually it did (gearbox and oil cooler.  It did have 200k on the clocks).

Got more than half what I paid for it when I sold it on, it was back on the road the following week.

Think it's to due with the part prices etc. You've just got know that you aint getting no decent or even half decent car till youve been driving a year, I was paying £1800 for a pug 306 1.6l following year was bombing around in a 1.8t. So as said get something crappy for a year.

Not a huge amount tbh, I found the biggest decrease in price was when I turned 21. Every little helps though

Mine was loads difference mate, 1.8t (180bhp) at 18 and one year experience was the same as a pug 306 at 17. 110bhp increase not bad! one years no claim took of £50 though!

Put your mum or dad as named driver, without this my 1.8t would of been £3000. Just fake ya insurance quote as being driving a year and you'll see the difference.

Ok if a golf is to much would a polo or lupo be cheap and fun I really do want a vw and then maybe euro look it

What about a MK3 1.4 GL. MK3's are simple to modify, and look the part when slammed to the deck. Sure the 1.4 isn't going to break any landspeed records, but it's alright.

I've literally just been doing quotes for my missus who is a first time driver with no NCB.

I managed to get a quote for a MK3 1.4 GL for £1380 ish, and a Polo 1.3 for £1325 ish.

ok a golf gl could be good but the insurance will still be high as im 17 year old male with no claims bonus. Anyway someone on my street is selling a fiesta with 36000 miles for £575 so looks like it will be cheap and then after a few years I can get a mk2 or 3 golf gti.

tbh that fiesta sounds pretty good, tho have good look at it first. Just drive it for a year to build up your ncb.

Id certainly be opting for the earlier Polos in this situation.
