Depends on if you are seperating the numbers out (brackets etc) as to what answer you get.

there are no brackets in this equation :)

20 + (20 x 0) + 1 = 21
(20 + 20) x (0 + 1) = 40

I looked at it like this:
((20 + 20) x 0) + 1 = 1

Not that simple..

Also 'zero' as a true value never actually exists, even if it is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001 or whatever so 'zero' is a concept and not a value.

I dont understand why brackets are being added when there were none in the original question, how is the answer not 1?

20+20 is 40, then times 40 by 0 which is 0, then add 1, which makes a total of 1. Is that not correct? This could be fun with some of the smart arses at work

my calculator brings it out as 1  :undecided: Not saying anyone's wrong but it goes against what I was taught at school (at least what I can remember of it 12 odd years ago )

I know this is being called simple maths, but if certain calculators bring it out as different answers and calculators are what kids are relying on nowadays in their exams, doesnt seem very simple to me
Title: Re: simple maths

The normal calc returns 1, the scientific calc returns 21, programmers calc returns 10101. Sure we learnt this at school, the last time I would have done something like this would have been 12 years ago, not going to have remembered that little quirk of maths rules straight away so went for the obvious answer, I did try change my answer after a minute as I had remembered the rule but it's not set to allow changes.

As regards to the maths exam question, if you just said you put 20 + 20 x 0 + 1 in the calculator and showed that in your workings out you would lose marks.

You have to do it properly. Then you will get the same result. Traditional calculators will just automatically "equals" when you hit + - / - etc.

Keep up at the back!

You cant add 1 to nothing!
Because you have nothing to add to.

20 + 20 = 40

40 x 0 = 0

0 + 1 = 0

Remember forum friends, if you are out tonight and have had say, 0 pints, that if you go to the bar and get yourself 1 pint, that you then proceed to drink, you will honestly have then had in total, 1 pint. Not 0, definitely not.

I've heard that before, but it only makes sense verbally and in this case to do that correct math you can view doing the equation back wards to make more sense to peeps!

Len look at it this way.... if you have one then add nothing you are left with one

1+0=1
20x0=0
1+20
left with 21
