Title: BKS Tuning and LED Rear Tails - Assistance Required!
Post by: JigsawJay on 08 November 2011, 15:15
Hi Guys,

I've just put in an order for a new White Golf Mk6 1.4 TSI and looking for some advice on the R-Style LED Tail lights.

(I have done searches and read most of the posts before you shout "use the search button!!")

1. Is BKS reliable to purchase from? I've seen a few guys on here who have bought them from the site but not seen many follow up posts! - I assume I need both lights and the adapters to fit (plus a friend who has the relevant tools to remove old and reinstall new ones)

2. SteveP - I can't message you (no idea how) - what's your price in the UK for supplying the R LED Lights plus wiring? - I read you are a bit further south of Ashby on M1 so I could meet you to collect and get them installed

3. If my car is brand new (currently being built somewhere in Germany!) - Will I need to find a friend on this site with a VAGCOM Unit to recode the car and fix the bulb out issue or will the fact my car is new mean it's all ok for retrofit?

4. Will the recode mess anything up in terms of warranty (I assume not) - can it be 'wiped' if I take the car to get servced and they do any kind of upgrade - I've read of DMS remaps being wiped by dealers in past and dont want to trigger bulb out problems.

5. Are there any dealers in UK who can recode for the LED Lights without charging huge sums of money?

6. How on earth do you private message on these forums - I was going to drop SteveP a PM but have no idea how!

Thanks very much for your help guys. I literally cannot wait until car gets delivered!

edit: think i posted this in wrong forum previously (cosmetic?) - sorry!

If you've just ordered your car, it may be a while before you actually get it. A few months into next year possibly.
You need 10 posts before you can private mail.
I'm sure someone will be along to answer your other questions.
Welcome to the forum by the way

SteveP is your man to purchase and fit the rear LED tails. You'll have no problems with bulb out warnings etc as your car has the latest electronics. However, you need 10 posts before you can use the PM facility.
So, introduce yourself in the appropriate section and build up your post count.

Oh, welcome and congratulations on your new purchase.

Ah thanks guys - that would explain why no PMs!

I've got a delivery date early-ish Feb but i've said to the dealer i'd prefer to take delivery March 1st to grab the "12" plate. (its a painful painful wait)

I'll wait for SteveP to get back to me on this and go add some posts on the 'hi' forum.

I tried to get the lights factory fitted (vw.de car "konfigurator" allows you to add them) but apparently it's not available on UK Spec cars annoyingly.

Have you went for any extras?

I got the Match so it came with most of the things I wanted.

I added park assist, rear tints and luxury pack.

I was going to get the fogs but decided against at the last minute and nearly bought the colour MFD but realised i was paying over £200 for a gimmick.

Match comes with most of the kit I think i would've specced anyways :)

Anything you guys would recommend over what I have?

Welcome to the world of mk6 Golfs JigsawJay.
The Match is a good spec car and pretty good value as VWs go.

There is a thread running about favourite MK6 addition that folk give their opinion on best extra. Might be worth a read.  Personally for me its the Rear View Camera. Can't believe how much I rely on it now, which is really noticeable when I drive the Mrs car.

You lose DAB on the match if you spec it with rear cam and want to pay though - I read it could be quite a cheap addition (£150 or something?)

If you have DAB you can't have the camera regardless of an addition.
Its £150 or thereabouts from the factory but £300 odd if added after I think.

I only really added it as a gimmick but have been most impressed with it and anyone that sees it, is also impressed.

Think it would be one of the things I look for in a new car.

(getting there with your post counts  )

Meant to add, I like DAB in the house but the reception can be terrible at times so not sure how it would be driving about.  Anyone recommend it?

I like the idea of the rear camera but wouldn't pay over £300 for one.

I have DAB in my daily driver, but as an add on (the car is 14 years old) using a Pure Highway. The reception is good in cities and areas where reception is good using just a screen mounted ariel but can break up a little in remote areas.
I do like the DAB though, it's nice to be able to listen to the footie in the car without the AM signal screaming and fading alternatively...

A mate has it as standard in his wifes Kuga. It does sound really good. So much so, he's looking into reto fitting it into his new Superb.

My nephew has the petrol Match and it comes loaded with kit. I got him to specify fogs as they do improve the look of the front. Besides, they come as cornering fogs from the factory, a feature which he finds useful. Brilliant ride on the 16" wheels and ever so quiet.

Cornering fogs are not the same as being a tw@ and driving with your fogs on. They seem to be standard on non GTI models with factory fitted front fog lights, but seemingly they can be coded to work on GTI's.

If you are not aware of what they do, they illuminate on one side only when you indicate or turn the steering beyond a certain angle at low speeds.

My GT has them, and I'm not sure if I like them. They do have their benifits, but on the other hand, to the uninformed, make them look like they're broken.

IMO the Colour MFD is great compared to the standard.  It is smoother going through the screens and much easier to read.  Worth it on the new car. IMO

Don't say that!

In pictures it looked a bit 'meh' so I didnt bother to spec it.
:(

I still need a few more posts then I can message SteveP RE: the lights :)

Glad it's just a plug and play job though - doesnt sound like I need a recode thankfully!

My last post was intended a little tongue in cheek,  I'm unlikely to drive around with my fogs on unless required,  I am a 'tw@t' though !!

Thanks for the additional info though,  I had no idea there were so many spec differences amongst the Golf range,  certainly learning a lot from this forum but it could be an expensive exercise with several items already on my wish list

Steve - Is coding required on a new build with tail lights?

Someone else said it wouldnt be but really have no idea.

Out of interest - if the coding isnt done - do I just have to suffer the 'bulb out' warning light on ignition (no other problems?)
