Alright gang! ive made a decision to retire my old mk3 gti and have decided on a mk5 gt tdi 170. anyone got any advice to look for in these beasts? common probems and extras worth having and not having ect?

I've ran a gt sport 170 for 2 years and it's never missed a beat, the only real is problems with some of them is DPF issues.

rust on front arches

DPF regeneration issues can be a problem if you do a lot of short journeys. The DPF has been known to block completely and choke the car - or worse.
You can of course get the DPF removed and then with a remap you are looking at around 210bhp and 300lbft.

I think there's an injector recall on a certain run of models. You can tell if it needs the recall by checking some number, maybe on the injector? Sorry I don't have more details but a friend of mine was telling me about it.

Its not an official recall but the 170 injectors are known to fail. Mate of mine has just had his replaced FOC but it took a couple of weeks to get VW to admit there is a fault.
I had mine done back in August

As per Rhyso mentions injectors go wrong. Rhyso and me both got ours replaced FOC.

That's the lovely DPF pipe for you  I'm averaging high 40's over the course of a tank

high 40's on a runs poor,i've seen 68 & on a long run easily get high 50's.

do you drive everywhere downhill? and have you worked out your REAL MPG i.e. from tank to tank rather than relying on the computer

I do know how 2 work out real mpg & i'm not going 2 say i get high 50's if its not getting that.

Considering the poor ecconony, DPF and injector issues, my money would go on a newer 140 and a cheeky remap.
The only visual difference between the 140 and 170 is the exhaust. A lower vallance and a Milltek will soon address that issue it it would bother you.
