Title: Anyone know much about 4x4 x-type jags?
Post by: dragongreengolfgti on 26 October 2011, 21:27
Basically i'm looking at getting a cheap 4x4 for the winter and after seeing an old top gear got me thinking about the x-type jag which on there test drive turned out very good with great grip and handling. I'm looking at either the 2.5 v6 or 3.0 v6 4x4 manual. I will only be spending £1400 tops and theres a few out there at this price and to me thats alot of car for very little money. so does anyone know much about them or ever had one? The Plan is this is only purely going to be for a winter car so i can park the golf up for some engine work  :nerd: Its fairly hilly around my way and i remember last year it was a complete pita in the golf so i have been looking at other options i.e subaru imprezza awd sport non turbo an old discovery/range rover or similar. Not sure what else to look at for that price range? I would rather spend only 1k max and put the rest into the golf but its not essential to do so. any thoughts or recommendations welcome cheers peps.

Mike

It's a Mondeo.

I know lol but thats not a bad thing mondeos have been used for company cars for years which also suggests reliability underneath with the added fact a reliable jag engine installed and the comfort so i'm thinking its a good option

Thanks for the link however i'd prefer a car based 4x4 rather than a typical big 4x4 and each of those examples are still relatively over budget even being second hand still some options which i hadn't thought of and one may pop up when im seriously looking which will be end of november cheers

a lass at work has a suzuki swift 4wheel drive(quite old think its about 12-15 years old). she lives in a very remote area, her drive had a massive hill going down and then it has a tight turn at the bottom were theres a river, when it snows nothing will go up her drive, even the royal mail wownt go up there. and the roads around her are pretty bad too, last year on the way to work she used to see a few cars that had been abandoned  every day. she however never got stuck. and the car only cost her a couple of hundred quid.

i have no experience of one though so could be compleatly wrong, but what ive herd there relatively good, relatively cheep and not exactly expensive to run.

so yeah if your looking for something cheep which wil be better in snow than a fwd golf could be worth a punt

sounds like she should have charged for lifts that year  I know what you mean though i have looked at them also and your right they are cheap etc but maybe abit girly  however if thats all i can find at the time then thats what i will drive  The golfs being retired for definate at the end of dec when tax runs out for max of 6 months but i'd still like to find something before the start of dec as the snow will be here before then by the sounds of it

Cheers elvi i did look at that silver jag shame its an auto same with the subaru im after a manual as i could use my dads range rover for winter but again its auto and i dont like them  that passat on the other hand would be alright although if its anything like the golf 4mo it will drink more than i do which isn't good plus really i find vw's quite unreliable regarding sensors etc i just need something that will go through snow and not give me any hassle for 6 months  over budget also max is £1400 sorry is there any smaller engined 4x4's in the vag group for the sort of price im willing to pay which dont suffer from any problems

It's a Mondeo.

This always makes me laugh. They share less with the mondeo than the TT does with the golf. This sadly means it doesn't get the build quality, reliability or sharp handling of the Mondeo either.

My old man had a 2.0D 2WD one and while it looked nice, it fell apart, was unreliable and frankly a bit crap.

Haha sounds interesting and thats maybe why they are so cheap now but surely if i choose one it would last another 6 months although my luck with cars is not a great one im currently looking at reviews and forums etc and its a mixed view tbh so i dont know really i'd prefer a petrol also as i havn't yet seen a 4x4 diesel version yet and petrol price dosn't bother me either

plus they are noted for major rust due to the plastic sills acting as a water trap.

Elvi, that link you posted to reliability is a load of bollox, it has a picture of a Freelander on it.

To the OP, last winter we used an automatic MK3 Golf with cheapo Mud/Snow tyres on it. Didn't get stuck once, ever.

Towed a Vaxhaul openback truck out of Cotmendene estate with it as well.

Car is fine, get some decent tyres, use the natural ability of being male and save some cash.

Rusty sills: http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36189&start=30&hilit=x+type+rust+sills

The issue is that the sills are hidden by plastic covers so none of this can be seen until it is too late.

This was a 2002 car I believe

They are also noted for rust on door bottoms, bootlids etc.

I know about freelanders lol my parents lost just shy of 1k on one earlier in the year  i cant keep my golf on the road as its having some work done to the engine  :lipsrsealed:  and a bit of love spent on it, it is not an option maybe another cheap golf but i'd rather some 4x4 action this year so i dont struggle as its supposed to be very bad this year. I get your point about natural ability etc which every year i have succeded fine and some times i'm the only one to get out of our road. I also have a set of wheels with brand new tyres on already (not winter tyres) but good quality non the less which will be used up untill it is off the road. I'm not worried about saving cash either as what ever i buy will be sold once ive finished with it.

That dosn't look good tbh but then i don't really care to much aslong as its got mot and tax for the duration of winter i will then simply sell it on after  on a serious note i've had 6 golfs now its nothing i havn't seen before im used to it  i wouldn't buy one if i wasn't happy either whatever i do choose to buy will be checked over by my dad whos been in the trade 35+ years cheers for the heads up though as i didn't know they could get that bad

I will second what wayne said about the rust underneath.

My dad got a 2.0 petrol x-type as a trade-in a while back which he felt he had to take because he knew this old unwell guy for so long.

One owner car, 57,000 miles and underneath was the worst I had even seen. As the picture wayne showed, these sills didn't have just the odd hole, there were sections that had largely disintegrated.

A quote from the jaguar garage effectively wrote the car off by the bill they were asking but an indy mechanic made a very fine job.

Thats not to mention the numerous electrical faults including the automatic gearbox being stuck in limp mode.

my old man has a X-type jag, 4x4 with the privacy pack. some black 17s and a powerflow exhaust, nice 3.0l v6.

basically a mondeo but its solid, pulls well, lovely to drive and fookin brilliant in the snow last year.

No need to be sorry I was not overly impressed with my old Saphy, still knowing ford it probably still uses the same 4x4 running gear as the Jag
I reckon that Sierra will fetch that price though they have a popular following
