Title: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Chris. on 23 October 2011, 19:20
Anyone had any issues with sticky/tappy lifters/hydraulics on a 1.8T AGU head?

I have a 7200rpm rev limiter and hit it in first today,  dropped down with a little pop from exhaust (as it normally does) however it has now started tapping when you give revs on the engine.  Sounds a lot like the lifters in the engine and its perfectly quiet on idle and not lumpy in any way.  Doesnt burn any oil or anything bad.

Any clues/ideas?

Chris

maybe a few have been starved of oil at the high revs?

Hmm maybe.  Its a good theory too.
Surely they should get their oil again shortly after though?

lifters are very temperamental. If they get starved of oil the spring can wear the metal inside. The hardest part is finding the thing, we have 20 to choose from lol

On my old XR2 I put a brand new set in with my fast road cam and ran them in as per the instructions. Within 10 miles one had worn to the point the spring had started to come through and it was spitting fuel back up through the carb

Put a replacement in, never had any trouble with it after that so I put it down to the oil way being blocked

Is the oil pick up pipe all ok.

I had a look at the elsawin method for testing them and the method looks pretty simple.  Gonna stick a engine flush in and maybe swap oil see what/if anything is in it and put some fresh in.

Wouldnt want to buy a new set of lifters like :(

Wayne - havent checked the oil pickup pipe

Ideal chance to check it if i drop the oil though!

If it has never been changed for the sake of £12 I would fit a new one.

what oil are you using too?

out of interested tho, what kind of boost does yours hold at 7,2? :S

Roughly around 10-12psi -ish.  My boost gauge under-reads by about 3psi.

Its got 5w-30 oil in it.  Might drop it and put some 5W-40 in or 10W-30

+1

Plus I would only use 5W-40 Quantum Platinum and nothing else.

Will check pickup later on.

Nick -  still dropping into limp mode when at 4000.  Will get a fault scan done see if anything popped up!

Are you still running the MBC? as you will need to set it correct, Get another boost gauge and set to 21/22psi peak with the MBC then the N75 will do the rest.

MBC in parallel.  I'm seeing 18psi peak on my gauge so around 21psi. MBC is capped where you set it.

Will try find another boost gauge

It will need setting up again as when in parallel there is extra bleed off from the n75, unlike running it on its own.

Checked cams today and no unusual wear.  Going to check pickup tomorrow and maybe new oil and a flush to try clear things out?  What you think?

I would not use engine flush tbh

What would you recommend?

Heard a few good things about forte stufff....but all it does is dislodge any grime in oilways potentially causing a blockage.

Theres a couple options:

1) ignore it and hope it wears off
2) fresh oil and clean pickup
3) New exhaust tappets

Any obvious damage on them?

No obvious signs of wear at all.

We cleaned tappet out today and swapped it to other side of head....gonna rebuild it tomorrow see what happens

Title: Re: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Chris. on 25 October 2011, 21:30
Well, problem narrowed down with the noise moving to other side of the engine.

Starting to think raised limiters on them arent the best of things!  6800rpm is enough by looking at the dyno plot!

Any updates mate?
Title: Re: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Chris. on 26 October 2011, 22:20
So 7500+RPM is a killer?

7200rpm rev limter.  Might get it knocked down to 6950ish looking at the graph from dyno.

No updates.  Got same sat on but need to put the piston #1 at top dead centre and line cams up.  had a quick look today but lining the timing marks up on cams with 16 teeth puts the cam sprocket not on top dead centre....SO....when you time the head up, do you rotate the cams around so the sprocket is at top dead centre?

Luckily we have a AGU in the garage so I can easy check things.  If it doesnt go well...tomorrow ill be swapping engine for that and finding out whats wrong with mine.  Mates clio project can wait!

please, information on timing as I only had a quick look at it today between jobs.

Got it built back up tonight with tappet swapped over.  Still no luck and still tapping its tits off from same area.  Head off and inspection and see what cause is.

Could be putting mates engine in aswell depending what the problem is.

:( :(
Title: Re: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Wazzzer on 28 October 2011, 13:55
damn not a good result then

where is the tapping coming from mate? Could it be the cam chain?
Title: Re: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Chris. on 28 October 2011, 13:57
No idea.  Early indications show its not head related from
Machinists but he wants tappets to see what they like.  So could be bottom end so whipping sump of later on and check pickup.

bummer mate them chain rentioners can make a noise my mates first golf have a noisey tentioner. so when nick does mine shall i get him to put the limiter at 7k rpm? also yours is running a mbc do i need one as well?
Title: Re: Sticky Lifters 1.8T?
Post by: Chris. on 28 October 2011, 23:06
Im not overly too sure what issue is yet.
When we psuhed the car back tonight in gear, the 4th cylinder filled with oil.....whether this was because engine was in reverse and pushing oil up I dont know  but its now a bare block and I have replacement ready to fork lift in tomorrow at some point.

If its a rod, chances are ill just buy a set of uprated ones and set of piston rings and rebuild my engine and swap back over.  Otherwise, mate is going to have my 'dead' one to put rods in.

Could well be the torque has killed them, Albeit a bit under 300lb/ft torque, but with a engine on 102k who knows what they like/torque they can cope with.
One thing we did notice was there was a white/clean line around the 4th cylinder exhaust valve on the end and the others were just normally coked up as they do....just this one had a line around outside it....i didnt see it though, just mate explained.

If i was to do it again, id get rpm limited to around 6950/7000 if you want to sound cool with a 7 in your rev limiter.  You just need to see my graph to see how much power drops off over 6800rpm.  Definately drops from about 190bhp @ 6800rpm to ~140bhp @ 7200rpm, so just shows the sheer lack of power the turbos can give at high RPM!

I have a MBC to cap the peak boost

thing is mate it would be cheaper to buy a bottom end and fit new rods rather than after a standard rod tries to make a break for freedom...

Oh dear! So much for that pushing that lil' ko3s to its limits.  :lipsrsealed:

So fitting a K04-023 to the car would not have caused this issue and its because the k03s is maxed out.... Just show how much you really know about engines, turbos and tuning....PMSL

I am sure if it was maxing the K03s out then I would have many unhappy customers.

I think your problem is that your on a very bias forum, and your reading what the site owners/sponsors want you to read.
Funny how all my post got took off CGTI and all my K03s - k04-001 1/4 mile sprint times and 2011 show awards got deleted by the site owner?

Back to topic

I was running upto 400lbft of torque on my stock shells, and with just the k04-023 with out nos all day long at 335lbft at 3200rpm only runing 5w40 Platinum oil.

Befor you put the sump/head back on I would check the oil galleries and blow them out.

Nick

Got a engine in and all running sweet!

Got it stripped down today and found this:

No idea what caused it....others feel fine without taking them off.  Its either:  Low oil to no.3 (oil was changed 2 weeks ago)
over revved and it didnt like redline (as thats when it happened)
Weak/sub-quality shell

Maybe, without a professional opinion, i cant really say.

Bit scoring on the crank so will have to go to machinists to be checked....the rod, thankfully will be replaced with a uprated one when mate builds engine.

that looks like it had bugger all oil to it at high revs

nasty though mate, imagine where all the rest of that metal is... not in your engine now

All this caused by running the K03s to its limits

Who knows lol.  maybe I should return to a k03 turbo and it all wouldnt have happened PMSL!

Think ill turn that engine to scrap.  Without knowing whats the cause, dont want mate running a Gt28 on it!

You need to try and find the cause if you can, it could have even been the oil getting thinned coil pack and missfire causing a bore wash? The reving over 7000rpm with poor lube was the last straw.

I have a AGU engine comming next week all I wanted is the large port head for my AUM, so if your looking for a good bottom end..

Plus a have in stock a set of THS rod which I ordered in wrong, I think they are for the BAM pistions as the taper wont not fit my aum pistons, If they are for the BAM that also means you can run the stroner oem shells? I will try and find out abit more about the rods.

Let me know Nick.  I dont really want mate to be running 300bhp+ on it and becomming totally unreliable.

Mates also after a set of rods for his....What you reccommend for a AGU?

Might be interested in the block if the right price.

I push the AGU blocks to 320bhp on stock rod, people say 350bhp but I am happy to stay within the safe window.   I have not issues with my THS rod, the have took stupid amount of torque and close on 400bhp,  The Leon AUQ GT35 stage5 trim we are working on has a set of £1500 arrows rod fitted...lol a bit over kill but its going to be running 2.2bar at 8000rpm 570-600bhp

Surely that depends on the torque though?

I was on about the my old block and not the block you are getting.  Running big power though a engine thats failed doesnt seem the best idea to me!

only when i poured the oil out the pan and the light hit the metal as it all rolled down the pan could you see it all in there

when i looked at my exhaust manifold and the head then i had trace wet oil on number two and three but mine was smoking oil lightly
