Title: Safety mk3 and mk2?
Post by: stainesy on 19 October 2011, 11:51
Ok this weekend I am going to meet a bloke that has a mint mk2 gti he is up for swapping for my mk3 gti.

My mk3 is my daily driver for work and taking kids about and general daily life stuff.
The mk2 will be doing the same job but what I want to no is what's the difference in safety between the mk2 and the mk3?
Like aairbags and generally if involved in a crash or something?
I ask as my kids will be in the car alot so want to make sure they are safe.
Is there a masive difference between them?

Yes, mk2 was designed in the 80's, much less safer.

I'm going to see it Sunday so will have a look then. I contacted him on a swapz website I'm on about his car. He seems very genuin and have spoken for a wile now. From all the pics and history it is very very clean and he has fallen in love with my car. I really want it but now worried about safety.

as has been said mk2s are much older cars and in that not as many safety or driving aids...

No one can predict one day from the next,i understand your putting your kids safety first.
go and buy a range rover or some other big daft 4x4 for safety mind.
But who is to say what type of accident your going to be involved with? a bus, truck train, plane, boat, milk float,camel...........

The end of the day it all depends how you drive with the kiddies in the car.drive like a twit and you WILL be the chosen one. :lipsrsealed:

I cant see there being much difference in safety between the two cars.
It is up to you to check the car is road worthy, make sure everything works.
Good luck and get some pics up of the new motor

imho the mk3 is a nicer drive, the mk2 s look better though.. so i can see both saides of it..
do whatever you want to matey at the end of the day its your money and your the one driving it .

Mk2's only look good as a 3 door! Fact!

Now with kids in the back you really have to have 4 doors.

So I look at it this way for practicality you have to have 4 doors, therefore as the Mk2 looks naff with 4 doors dont buy one!

It's a mint black 5 door gti with small bumpers with g60 wheels. It's soooooooo clean tho and my plan was to sent the wheels off to be banded. So it will be a mint black mk2 already on coilys with banded g60,s. I will post up the pics he sent me of it after work.

I always drive to the speed limit when I have my kids in the car but you never no what other drivers on the road are like.

Does it have ABS?

IMHO I think your present car looks great anyway so why go backwards?

I just love the older look of the cars and always wanted one. Plus I fancy change.

Tricky one.....

I have owned 7 Golf GTI MK2's.....Great drivers car, excellent on the country roads with hardly and bodyroll....Good cars.

MK3's....Designed with safety in mind due to the weight of them.

I had my daughter from the age of 4 when she started coming out in my MK2 GTI's.  Also when my daughter was born I had a Pug 205 1.9 GTI which are far less safe than a MK2 GTI.

Get the MK2 bud.....If it is not for you then you can easily sell it and get another MK3

That's why  going to go over it with a fine tooth Combe lol also taking my mechanic mate with me.
Thing is he is quite young and I think the modded look of mine with the stance wheels leather and all that has made him want it so I really think I may have got myself a propper bargain here. So it sounds like an awaum deal. Think we both getting what we want. I get a mint mk2 and he gets a modded stances mk3 to show off to his mates.

We will still give it the holy grail tune bud!  A guy on here called Rubjonny did the article in that link mate and to be really honest I have never met or known anybody to be so wise to MK2 Golf GTI's....I dont think there is anything he does not know about MK2 Golf GTI's.

Agreeable Slick is another guy who is awsome with MK2 GTI's, although he is a master with the 16v's.
