Hi,
Am currently looking at ordering a GTI but also considering the GTD.
The one thing putting me off the GTD is the choice of wheels, does anyone know if VW will fit Monza Shadows onto a GTD as part of the order or would I have to buy them seperate?
Thanks
Darren

You'll most likely have to buy them through the parts department :undecided:
Although I'd have a quiet word with the salesman and stress it as a deal breaker; see what they can come up with

I was actually thinking this but wasn't sure they would go for it. Can't hurt to try I suppose.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Make sure your sitting down when the parts department tells you the cost of them.

and an EMT  Think they are something like £500+ per wheel

I doubt the dealer would be too helpful, as it isn't possible to order them fitted from the factory. The dealer would have to retro fit them from another GTI and he's unlikely to want to do that. Or worse, he'd fit replicas!

If you want a GTD then, the standard 17" wheels that come with the GTD are quite superb and give the impression of being 18" wheels. If only the 17" Monzas on the GTI looked anywhere near as good.
Thus, I would stick with the standard 17" wheels with the GTD, which would give you: (1) a far better ride, (2) a quieter car, (3) tyres that won't cost the earth at replacement time, (4) nice high side walls to protect the rims so kerbing is more difficult.
You can then spend the money you save on ACC and attain nirvana.
-
and while the Monzas are a fabulous looking wheel, they are a nightmare to keep looking that way. Once the whiteworm inevitably starts, there's no stopping it. It looked chronic on my MK5.
-
The only way to do it safely is to buy a set off parts dept, If you go swapping wheels off cars then good bye warranty should you have any issues with white worm-cracks etc.
I remember all that time ago when I wanted a set for my GTD the cost was ridiculous even as an employee, luckily found a VW dealer in our group who had a genuine set for sale brand new off a new car that customer had put his own wheels on.
-
^^^ What Lee says.
These things are a nightmare for corrosion and sooner or later you will be calling upon your warranty department unless you are willing to stump up £80 a corner for a refurb each time?
Anyway, the Charleston Shadows look much nicer on the GTD than a set of Monza Shadows would.
The US market GTI now gets the option of those things that came off the Adidas GTI. I like them.

I asked for the Monza Shadows when I ordered mine but they wouldn't accept the wheel change they said you can only have the wheels specified for that model, thats more VW bull? I've quite got used to mine now.

What Andy says is very true ^^^^ Stick with the shadows very nice

Fitting Monza Shadows to a GTD, could make it look like you really wanted a GTI, and we all know that no derv owner would make that mistake.
Where VW slipped up, is dropped Vancouvers from the GTD option list.
-

No the reason I wanted Monza Shadows as they are easy to clean.

I beg to differ. With Charlestons and Vancouvers, you can get your wash mit between the spokes and reach all of the inside of the wheel, or is that just me being anal?
-
Thanks for the replies. Still tied between a GTI and GTD.
Think I need to go and see a GTD with the charlston shadows and make a decision.
Not sure I really need the extra mpg of a diesel but I want to make sure i've covered all roads before I make a choice.
-
If it's down to the Wheels as a deciding factor go for the GTI or even a second hand R! I know I'm a closet GTI fan! I only drive a GTD as I do high mileages.
The smoothness and appeal is greater compared to a high torque figure and cheaper distance (s)miles!

So your saying that flat surfaces are harder to clean than spokes?
Who uses a wash mit here apart from dubber36?

Granted, the faces of the Monzas are easy to wipe over, but then again, the Charlestons and Vancouvers aren't exactly difficult to clean for spoked wheels.

That'll be me as well then !! Wouldn't wash my 'couvers without one - I bet the black paint on your alloys is scratched - not just because of how they are washed but also the paint is soft so scratches quite easily
I also use wheel whoolies to get them really sparkly

The GTI is the only car I hosed down once and wiped the wheels once. Those Shadows are so easy to wipe.
As a rule, I never wash my cars or clean my houses. So much easier to get someone else to do it as it costs peanuts compared to what my time is worth.
Helps employment and the economy.

I hope they use decent equipment to wash your car otherwise they are doing horrible damage to that lovely red paintwork of yours

Nice Polish person at VW does the business very well once every 3 months.

Talking of washing the car.
Well I wouldn't trust the dealer to wash the car again. When I took it in for the digital gear indicator he asked if I want the car washing I said no it its that dirty. He said later they have washed it before he had chance to tell them not to.
The next day all my wheel bolt plastic caps went white so I don't know what they use to wash the wheels. I pulled them all off and used back to black to restore them even now there are traces of white on the caps. I haven't been back to claim a new set under warranty.

An acidic wheel-cleaner did that, most likely, e.g. "Wonder-wheels".
-
If you dont need the extra MPG that the GTD offers then its a no brainer, get the GTI
-
Well they must have changed what they use as previous washes at the dealer were ok so they aren't washing it again.

I know this isn't on topic of the original post but.....If I buy a GTI am I really going to spend my time worrying about it being stolen??
Only asking this after reading all the "car stolen" threads on here.
cheers

It is less likely in the richer South. :lipsrsealed:

Even less likely in the content countryside.

They also only pinch ones with 18s on as 17s don't have the street cred....

At least VW have morals. We cant have these smelly dirty diesels parading around the streets pretending to be GTIs now can we ;)
