Just a quick question.
If a car is running advance and is mapped for higher octane stuff like V-Power and you then find yourself low on fuel with no high octane fuels in sight, is it safe enough to fill up with supermarket petrol and add something like Millers Octane booster until you can get some V-Power?
-
v-power is a myth, placebo effect
-
you what? So you're saying higher octane fuel isn't any better?
-

Maybe in your head, I've seen dyno graphs and logs that prove otherwise.
-
Better fuel = less knocks = more ignition advance = more power?
-
Correct, ignition advance is free power.
-
Anyway, that aside, can anybody answer the original question please?
-
If I have to put normal fuel in I tend to take it easy and not give it too much stick
-
Mine is remapped and I only use normal unleaded, does not seem to run any better on super.
-
Is it mapped to use super though?
I know on the S3 fuel cap it recommends the use of higher octane fuel, they run fine without but pretty sure you get a fair bit of timing pull.
-
was yours specifically mapped for Super though Wayne?
-

was yours specifically mapped for Super though Wayne?
Not really, however it recommends super as standard on the filler cap plus the guy doing the remap said it is much better to use it.
But having tried super I don't really think it makes much difference what is strange however is that on super, mpg drops by around 4mpg.
-
If with a mapped car, if you use low octane fuel, could it start to misfire?
-
It wont missfire as much, you just wont get as much timing advance.
Mine will be mapped on tesco 99.

Night and day.
-
If I ever have to put normal in I'll get some logs of the timing for a comparison

Lmfao, the placebo effect is a human trait, you can't apply it to a car, either it gets more power or it doesn't.......

Knock sensors are there for a reason, no?
-
So...
Will normal supermarket stuff with Millers Power Eco Max help until you get to a V-Power pump?
Obviously I'd refrain from thrashing it until the proper stuff was in it.

well done jim (clap, clap) your car drive itself then? LMFAO

I'd quit before you embarrass yourself further...

It should be fine mate, just don't go caning it, my a3 said only high octane, but would feel slower less responsive if using normal, but mine wasn't mapped so I could of ran it on normal If I wanted too!
I'd like too see how my mk2 golf when mapped on v-power would react if using normal, I reckon it could be bad having no knock sensors!
It's called being stingy if you fuel with normal if it requires high !
-
all depends on your engine TBH, some enignes NEED high octane counts others dont.
IIRC all cars made in the EU have to be abel to run safely on 91 octane pond water ( even if output is reduced ) they are often very happy on 95 and the extra octane points that super gives arn't really required. if your remapped and turboed there may be a bit of differance proably a bit more spark on but if they've upped the boost fuel is likely been shoved in by the bucket to keep the cylinder temps down so it not that likely to knock and then you still have the knock sensors so the ecu will pull the timeing if it dose knock so your enigne isn't going to fall apart.
if you have a heavly modifyed engine things are a littel diffrent.
mates hillclimb car has an engine desinged to run on 120+ octane oxigenated fuel, it's a very high compression engine and runs a LOT of spark to make it power, it'll run on pump fuel but you have to retard the timeing that much to stop it knocking that it melts the exhaust valves
-
Standard unleaded is 95
Super unleaded is 97ish (Vpower is 97 too from what I remember)
Tesco momentum is 99
They run 105 in Japan, and we all know what there cars can be tuned to
I used to use Vpower but switched to Tesco for the points........every little helps lol
I did notice a better response higher in the revs from Vpower and momentum
-
I have used both on both my cars and never found any diference!
Also done RR's and no difference in figures! You'll get a bigger difference between the Rolling Roads themselves!
-
was your car specifically mapped for SUL though? If not you won't see any difference in power

i can notice with my car, it runs like a bag of sh!t lol.
-
dont they alter the ignition to what fuel is put in? So if you have v-power in the engine you ECU will automatically alter timing etc. Im sure R-tech told me that.... could be wrong
-
Doc or Rtech may tell us but i asked Amd once and they said they will map to 99 oct but if you use 95 oct then your car will not give you the remap bhp until you use 99 again. Our last audi 58 plate tts ran on 95 most of the time and 99 when i was at tesco and for some reason the car took about 50 miles before seeing any differance. Placebo effect dont know But doc or Rtech may help with this. Doc Rtech Help  Guys im asking alot of questions is that ok as im a newbe? Great forum by the way

My car runs so much better on 95 ron than 99 ron, although I told the guy I prefer to use super unleaded. On 95 ron its so much smoother, but if I fill up on 99 ron the boost is all over the place. Any ideas? :undecided: It doesnt bother, just wonder why it does it?
On REVO stage 2, guy done some adjustments when thew car was on the rolling road via the SPS.
Cheers
-
you sometimes might not notice a difference between 95 to 99, or using 97, but it certainly helps the engine by clearing out some sh!te
ive used v power once, cant say i noticed a difference, but it certainly lasted me longer
-
my ibiza 20vt with r-tech custom map works better with v power, i've used bp and tesco, bp made it feel a bit flat, tesco was better, with v power crisper, better on fuel too! Never used 95 with ibiza, just sold vrs octy with generic r-tech and that had 95/97/99 felt sharper on 99, but wife didn't ever push it hard enough to benifit the v-power!

There was a test on fifth gear a few years back testing different RON fuels in different types of cars and it made no difference in NA small engine cars but performance cars and especially turbocharged cars gained loads with v power. There was a mk5 gti on test if I remember right.
The video will prob be on YouTube I would think

what octane rated fuel were they factory mapped for? My guess is 95 so any higher won't make a difference. The Impreza pretty much proves this theory
