Hi all.
After selling my MK5 GTi at the end of 2009, I purchased a nearly new 320D M Sport. Absolutely stunning car, but absolutely more stunning when it sat in the garage for long spells in two harsh winters. Anyway, in March 11, the BMW was sold and a Ford Kuga AWD Titanium purchased. Another nice car, but not for me - should have had a longer test drive !!!!!!
So after burning two big buckets of cash, I intend to come back to the GTI. I'm looking for another 5 door with leather, phone prep and 18" Monzas as a minimum, ideally in Black/Carbon/Steel Grey. Would prefer Carbon and ideally 60 plate ish up.
Finding it difficult to pick one up and when you do, dealers want £30k for theres and want to pay £18k for the Kuga that cost £27k 6 months ago. Ouch !!
Any help appreciated !!
-
£27k for a Ford and then a £9k drop in 6 months! Good Lord, that just shows how valueless Fords still are.
Why don't you get an R with 4WD? Mind you it has got a miserable sized boot which is no good if you have a family with young kids. Additionally, it simlpy does not look as good as a GTI.
If you want a good value for money GTI go for a new Ed35 as it comes practically fully loaded and is far better value than a similarly specced standard GTI. It will also hold its value better when sale time comes.
PM evo1986 as your first port of call. He is a VW dealer and posts on this Forum. His dealership is Inchcape Cheltenham. He is very helpful and I am sure he will be more than capable to source you a car.
-
Only bad thing is that there is no stock edition 35s, so means ordering however one of the cars I have on order will be here mid-end November! As more time goes buy the kugar goes down but yes the edition 35 is the no brained car to order over standard gti.

Due to the loss on the Kuga, looking to get something under 25k, ideally 6 months to 1 year old. If I go for the 35, its pushing that bit further.
Have been offered a brand new white 5 dr, DSG, with cloth, 18" monzas, luxury pack, winter pack, parking sensors, cruise and DAB for £24k. In the showroom and ready to go.
So waiting for a price on mine, but still mulling over if a) the colour is right for me and b) really wanted leather.....
More internet searching tonight !

£24k? is that the GTI or GTD? Seems very cheap for the GTI - nice deal if you ask me. You might find at that price you'll get bottom money for your trade-in.

No its a brand new GTI, unregistered.
Apparently, it was a PAT car, which I think was a special offer from VW ???

That deal is amazing mate imo, there are more expensive cars with that spec that have done 10k miles on VW used website.
P.S. I wouldnt worry about the leather, if I got another GTI I wouldnt get leather or DSG and save nearly £3k

Leather In the gti is rubbish IMO, DSG is a must but that price

Take it if it also has ACC.
The white will grow on you.

GTI prices are tumbling due to the advent of the Ed35.
And if it has ACC the joke will be on YOU!

I'm really falling out with VW, bringing the ED35 has screwed me over when it comes to trade-in. Should have got an Audi S4 like I'd originally planned
-
I will certainly look at it. Hopefully they can sort out the PX value.
Not exactly holding out, as when I turned up at 3.45 Saturday afternoon, I saw the manager and he did't seem bothered whether he served me or not. Frustrating as had called him to say I was coming.
He did say what do you want me to do with yours !!
Have also seen a 60 plate steel grey manual with leather, but 17s for £21k at VW Huddersfield. Very tempted to go after it, but having leaving a deposit on a mint MK5 a 4 years ago, I spent two hours getting up there to find it was a right dog !
At that price, I could add a set of 18s and would certainly help the loss suffered with Kuga
-
No ACC .
Its DSG
Winter Pack
Lux Pack
Cruise
DAB
Parking Sensors
18" Monzas
...RRP £29,150.
Probably get offered £17k for mine. Could do with a dusting of snow to help the 4 x 4 demand and prices !
-
VW staff are beyond belief, you would think as times are supposedly hard for car dealers they would just about bite your hand off; but not a bit of it as they are as rude and ignorant as they ever were.
I would not rule a car out for not having ACC I believe it is an advantage to have it but not a necessity as the ride is pretty good without, it's just that bit better with.
I would try and buy a car with xenons as they are almost impossible to retrofit and most people on here without them seemingly wish they had gone that little bit further and specced them, if you do a lot of night driving they are an absolute godsend.
I really cherish my little reversing camera and wish I had specced it from the factory as it was not a cheap retrofit, so for £150 ish I would recommend this device.
All the best with your search, have you looked on Autotrader? there are 42 or so on there.

After much excitement at locating the white GTI, it doesn't look like it will happen.
The PX value they offered this evening was actually bottom book....not bad considering its 5 months old and unmarked ! Since found out after I went into my local Ford Dealership, that they bid more money on it than VW offered me to do the deal.
So it appears that they are trying to make a big chunk off what they are discounting. When I said their offer was a joke, some £2k off my other PX valuation, he said have you seen Motorpoints prices. I replied yes, their cars are the base model vehicle and in this instant do not have the full manufacturers warranty, to which he replied people don't care.
Funny that, as when I returned from Cyprus and bought my GTI back to me, you certainly seemed to care that it hadn't got the full warranty even though it was full UK Spec.
So I will move on......there are a few about in the system and hopefully not all dealers will be so arrogant to appreciate, that there appears to be a flood of people prepared to kick £25k into a new car at this point.
I will get the private plate off this month and look at a private ad. Hopefully that may help offset the shocking loss. I cant believe that PX values have ranged between £18k and £20.7k ...for a 6 month old car that listed at £28k ! Hoping for a dusting of freak snow to push the demand for 4 x 4s up !

Darren,
Why don't you like the Kuga? It's supposed to be the best of the breed according to most car magazines. Most people I know who own one, simply love it.
If I were you, I'd hang on to it as the financial loss is so crippling.
I really feel for you and fully appreciate your predicament.
-
Pretty simple equation just sell the kugar back to the dealer that actually bid more than you were actually offered then go and buy the gti.

Basically the cars been a dog since it was 3 weeks old ....developed gearbox noise at 500 miles. Its since been in the garage for 25 days on and off, having had a new transfer box, rear diff, gearbox in and out twice, new CAT, totalling over £5k at warranty rates. Its still ongoing and the Ford Dealer and Ford UK will not accept my rejection.
So essentially I was going to PX it, once it has new oil seals this week, as a big legal case is looming that could easily dwarf the depreciation on the car if I lost the case. On the face of it, the car is unmarked and looks stunning, but for me the reliability is compromised and not prepared to keep it in the longer term.
Now considering the Steel Grey motor up at VW Huddersfield, as at £20k for a 60 plate with leather would really help my loss on the Kuga.
All I can say ....shocking service from Ford !

I would, but they sold their car yesterday afternoon and obviously being a VW dealership dont just want to take my car. They also won't let me know who wanted to take it in, as they know very well I will buy one elsewhere.
Bit of a mare really !
-
What a 'mare.
I fully understand now why you want shot of it.
I hope you get your GTI and become a regular member on this forum. It is badly in need of eloquent new blood.
Just one bit of advice: try and source a GTI with ACC. It's amazing and really makes a significant difference. Don't be too hung up on the leather either. The Jacara cloth is quite eye catching and very comfortable.

Quite agree, my jacara cloth looks as good as the day I got the car, no nobbly bits and stunning in the interior of the cabin as it lightens the area a bit but still manages to look extremely classy.

Just thinking out of the box, just been onto we buy any car and a few other establishments of the kind....a bid of £20,460 after fees ! Just shows how low the VW dealer was. I know how these operations work, but they can't exactly knock it down in price on inspection as the car is mint.
Game back on....now for the right car !
-
Struggling to find a GTI.
I've rung a couple of dealers about possible cars and I've had one guy that will bend over backwards to sell me a car and sounds like he has everything but GTIs, another 2 dealers that didn't even call back and finally the final dealer who wanted near list price for his 3,000 mile demo and will not even look at the pricing.
Disappointing as had the Kuga juiced up ready to travel the length of the country to get one.
-
Darren have you looked on pistonheads ?
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3180444.htm
-
Thanks Neil.
I might look at that as its got a reasonable spec. Ideally I would like a car thats a bit younger, but its not bad money.
Wish I had kept them R32 alloys now .....!
-
Have you looked at the classified section on here BrigGTI is selling a 10 plate black car and has not placed a sold notice on his ad yet, may be an idea to PM him.
-
theres is loads on pistonheads  not all vw dealers either so might get a decent part ex on the kuga ?

Hopefully....there's a deal to be had on my Kuga, as one of the internet buyers has offered good money ....far more than any VW garage offered. So on that basis, the hunt is on.
I've been tipped off by a friend over the weekend that he was passing a VW dealership that has just taken a 60 plate into stock. Its a steel grey, 5 door manual with Leather , front and rear parking, bluetooth, winter pack, luxury pack and DVD Nav. The only thing it hasn't got is Xenons and has only got 17" Monzas.
Its up at just over £20k, so seems a decent price, so would just need to locate a set of shadows. Whats peoples thoughts, depending on condition/owners/history etc ?

That sounds very cheap especially for a VW dealer. A quick look on Autotrader and there's nothing with that kind of spec, sat-nav, leather etc anywhere near that money!!!
I wouldn't worry about the wheels mate, get some nice BBS with the money you'd save getting this one!

Seems too good to be true. Would prefer carbon grey, but at that money seems crazy to pass buy if it is genuine. The 17"s are annoying, but you can't have it all and thinking about it would make great winter wheels potentially!

I pass near the dealer each day. Do you want me to take a look of I can and give you first impressions?
If you do, reply on here and PM so I get it and I'll let you know

That would be great. The ones that I have seen are opposite ends of the country, so a quick once over could save me a massive trek.
Thanks

If I finish work early enough tonight I'll call in
-
It's on at £20,850 according to the website. It looks nice, looking at it again at a fraction under £21k without the 18" wheels it's probably priced about right as people will pay a premium for a car with the wheels.

Detailed report in your PM box
Thanks for your help. I'm considering going up at the weekend.
Struggling to get past the picture of the car in Steel Grey with the 17s. It looks a bit uninviting in its current form, but I know a set of shadows would transform it.....just need to find a set.
What's peoples thought on Steel Grey ? Being a keen detailer, would have preferred the Carbon Grey .
On a seperate note, I thought that as the car had a roof aerial like you see on BMWs, it indicated the car had bluetoooth....apparently this car hasn't got bluetooth, so can someone tell me what the aerial is ?
-
I noticed the aerial - I think it has it for the Sat Nav
The steel grey isnt as nice as Carbon but to be fair it looked nice when viewing.
One thing to consider is to see if theyd swap the Monzas with a set of vancouvers - they had loads of Golfs with them on - I did this with my GTD - you'd get more seling the Vancouvers on leaving you less to add to get some shadows.
You mentioned detailing - are you on Detailing World ? I am but a different user name.
-
Yes, I'm on Detailing World as well.....under a different name.
My MKV was black and looked stunning clean, as did my light grey 3 series. However, even though the Kuga looks good in black, with the hassles I've had with it, not really had the desire to spend many hours on it.
So ideally would prefer a GTI in the Carbon or Black.
I will speak to them again tomorrow as they were getting a price on mine and the cost of putting bluetooth in. I just assumed with the aerial and steering wheel controls that was what it was.
-
Darren:
There are some on this site:

Been tonight and looked at a brand new GTI in Steel Grey. In the showroom lights with the Monza Shadows it looked stunning. Spec was Xenons, leather and Shadows above standard and they wanted £29.5k for it. Had to scratch my head at that one.
Looks like I'm going to look at the one at Huddersfield at the weekend now, having seen the colour in the flesh. So could be on the hunt for some Monzas !
Also been and had a look at a S3 Sportback tonight. Quite nice in black and massive spec and for a 60 plate great value for money. The car was very quick and I was quite taken with it until I saw the new GTI at the VW dealership.
-
^^ look forward to the update Darren
The S3 is quite nice but is on its way out with the new model imminent so I think the deprecation would be a lot harder but still tempting.
Hope the journey is worth it tomorrow

Thanks Adrian.
Going up with a friend to pick an Eos up at Manchester, then back to Huddersfield.
Can't believe its been 24 hours since I looked at both the S3 and the new GTi and neither dealer has got back with an offer on the Kuga or a deal.....they must be so busy!
Much will depend on the PX really and will go from there.....and the ability to find a set of Shadows !!
-
When I was looking for my car I found Sytner not the most helpful dealership (sorry but want to be straight with you!)
Very helpful on test drives and didn't mind me poking my nose around but they were asking top book for a GTD I was looking at and tried to tell me it wasnt what the car cost but how much I was paying a month etc etc. Needless to say they didn't get me to part with my cash
I have my car serviced there and thankfully that particular salesman doesn't appear to be there anymore!

So disappointed ! And cross !
Having spent 2.5 hours to get to Huddersfield, found the dealership really unhelpful. The salesman I had been working with wasn't in, even though I called yesterday to confirm my lunch time visit. And to top this, he hadn't left my information with another salesman, even though he had apparently secured bids on my Kuga.
Anyway, I looked at the Golf and it was evident that it had been painted on the rear bumper as there was a shade difference to the rear panels and the front had seen paint at some point recently. This wasn't really evident until I rubbed my hand over the bumper to find it fall off its fixings as it joined the wing.
All the salesman could do was shrug his shoulders and it was clear the bit of drizzle was getting his hair wet and that he was more bothered with that. He then asked if I wanted to pop back another day. So with that I left disappointed.
I not frustrated with the car in itself, as many cars have had paint at some point, it was the shocking service that I received today. Having said that, when I tried to buy a Mk5 from them 4 years ago, they weren't any better.
Having also looked at the new GTi at the dealership more local to me on Thursday evening, I'm still waiting for them to confirm a price having left voicemails with the salesman in question in two seperate instances !
Starting to think its not to be !
-
That's so disappointing - in the current climate you'd think they'd be the other way?
As mentioned I thought the front had had some paint but missed the rear bumper - sorry.
Not sure of their stock but Stuart Orlidge at Sheffield VW is excellent - he even rang me last week to check all was OK one year on - no sales push or anything else but keeping me onside for when I change in a year or two I guess.
They are part of the Gilders group and have quite a large list. Might be worth a look?
-
VW make good cars but their support network simply sucks.
I wonder if he'll ever find a decent used sample. He must be so fedup.
Maybe he should go for another make.

No worries Adrian.
The car was potentially the right car at the right price, so was worth a look and you had already highlighted a potential repair. So disappointed it wasn't to be, but just more angry at the dealers.
If I had gone in and offered silly money on their cars, I could understand if I'd put their backs up, but I hadn't. A lot of the problem is that they don't know what to do with a 6 month old PX.
I think I will give the dealers at both Rotherham and Sheffield a call as I expect we will be going up to see family their in the next few weekends. My brother-in-law is also taking delivery of a new GTD from Gilders in the next few weeks, so thats an option. Rotherham VW have a nice 59 plate, but was trying to go slightly newer.
So will stick with my plans and hopefully it will be worth the wait.
